Military Chic:Love it or Hate it?

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

Every couple of years, this trend sneaks back on to the scene and whether you love it or hate it,

Military Chic is IN!

It seems its mostly military inspired colors rather than your basic camouflage this year (Yes!!). I have never been a huge fan of this trend in the past however I am loving some of the looks this year.  From U.S. Vogue to Vogue Paris to Elle, the magazines are covering this trend for their spring and fall fashion spreads. Celebrities love this look and of course our favorite designers have brought the trend to the runway.

I did receive great advice from a knowledgable source. If you choose to sport the military inspired look, please out of the respect for our country and those who have served, be aware of HOW you wear this look. Please do not wear anything with stripes/medals/patches, etc ESPECIALLY if you are unsure of what they could mean.  To quote my daughter’s GodFather, “Do not wear anything you did not earn!”

It’s best to just stick to military INSPIRED designs and colors.

Here are some styles from the runway as well as some of your favorite stores.

My last Cocktail Attire blog was a big hit among my Charlotte Pretties and I am SO grateful for that. I think there were quite a few people who understood my frustrations when it comes to the idea of what is appropriate for a Cocktail Event.

As a reminder Ladies…..

Clubwear + Cocktail Event=A BIG NO-NO

Now that we have that out of the way, I have been asked to suggest a few cocktail dresses for those cocktail events that are held outside during this scorching heat.  I tend to lean towards the color black when dressing so I didn’t include as many colorful dresses in my last blog.

As requested, here are my picks when trying to stay Pretty AND Cool!  I’d love to hear from YOU. Feel free to email me questions/suggestions to akeith@prettycity.com and as always…COMMENT. I want to know which is your favorite dress!!!

The following dresses are from Macy’s and are priced between $89-$280.  They have a really good selection this year.

These are from Nordstrom and are priced between $138-$270

I LOVE this dress. It belongs in my closet.

I found this GREAT deal at Target for $39 (SERIOUSLY!)

Last but not least, for those that want something straight from the runway, I found this cool site -> http://bit.ly/cY6Ojm Rent the Runway.  You can rent the dress of your dreams for that special event. You can rent a designer dress retailed at $1200 for $150. To some, it’s not worth it but to others who really want to make a statement….this is YOUR ticket.

The Dos & Don’ts of Cocktail Attire

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

I recently attended an event where Cocktail Attire was requested. You can imagine my surprise when I saw many ladies dressed like they were going to pick up men at the club or like they were having a beer with friends at the local pub.

Ladies, Ladies, Ladies…..there is nothing about daisy dukes, flip flops, or hoochie-mama clothes that even come close to fitting into the category of Cocktail Attire. Ladies, you can be sexy without showing everything you have. Especially when the invitation specifically calls for you to dress in your finest. Now, not everyone can afford Chanel, Christian Dior, or Oscar de la Renta. We must work with what we have or what we can afford. After seeing such fashion nightmares recently, I wanted to offer just a few suggestions of Cocktail Dresses. I have made sure to include dresses for various sizes AND budgets.

These two dresses are from White House/Black Market and are priced at $168 a piece

I found these at Macy’s. They are all priced between $70-$170

If you are not comfortable wearing a dress, that’s ok.  Something similar to this would also work

I found this dress at Cache for $148. Don’t be afraid to use color!

These final three are from Belk and are priced between $70-$178

If you are working with a really tight budget, you still have options!! Check out your local upscale consignment shops, ebay, and even Goodwill. Other chain stores such as Burlington Coat Factory, Ross, and Target may also have something more in your budget. A little black dress is a MUST HAVE in the closets of all women. You can always dress up or dress down a black dress by changing up the style of accessories and shoes you use.

Dressing up for a Charity Event, a Red Carpet Event, or any other Cocktail party can be fun! Enjoy it BUT please for the love of all things pretty, leave your Club Wear at home.

PROJECT RUNWAY CO-HOST & LIZ CLAIBORNE INC. CHIEF CREATIVE OFFICER

TIM GUNN

hosted the 2010 Spring Fashion Show at Southpark Mall, sharing his expertise on “making it work”. The show included brands such as Juicy Couture, Kate Spade New York, and Lucky Brand Jeans.

Guests were able to enjoy live ,day/night, transformations and received invaluable tips on maximizing their wardrobe.  All styles were pulled from the stores so that guests could purchase their favorite look and Sephora provided a free express service to re-create looks from the runway.

Photos courtesy of me  ;) Enjoy!

I absolutely adore this dress. The back of it is fabulous. What a beautiful spring dress!

I just had a baby and don’t feel two piece ready so I think this one piece swimsuit is PERFECT. It screams Old Hollywood. I LOVE it. I am also loving the headpiece. Although, I am not sure who it would look better on….me or my 5 month old…I swear she has one very similar.

Great Spring Outfit for Brunch….don’t you think?

This is one of my FAVORITE looks from the show and I am seriously considering adding this to my wardrobe.

Here are a few more photos from the show. I did not stay for the Q&A  as I had another event to attend but I felt it was a nice show for a Saturday afternoon.  I hope the attending guests paid close attention and as Gunn says, “Great style is in everyone’s reach”
