Queen City Pretty:Suhair Hoskie

September 15th, 2010 by Amelia

Two years ago, Suhair Hoskie found herself unemployed and homeless as a single mother of two girls. Suhair was able to receive temporary shelter through Charlotte Emergency Housing which referred her to the WISH program: Workforce Initiative for Supportive Housing. This organization works to”empower homeless working families achieve economic independence”.  WISH works with Dress for Success Charlotte who provides interview/career suiting to disadvantaged women. The women don’t just leave with an interview suit or an employment wardrobe, they build lasting relationships with those from Dress for Success Charlotte and gain the skills needed to enter the workforce. Suhair was referred to Dress for Sucess and said said she was treated with “dignity, respect and warmth”

Shortly after entering the program at Dress for Success, she found a full-time job at Charlotte Radiology. Suhair is now renting a townhome and working towards home ownership. Her children are now in a stable environment and are no longer worried about the unknown.

Suhair has come a long way from being homeless to having a career and stable home for herself and for her family.  I am very excited to say that she is this week’s Queen City Pretty. She has worked hard to get where she is and she truly presents herself as a Beauty on the inside and out.

Thank you Suhair for being this week’s Queen City Pretty and thank you for taking time to share your personal views of Beauty.

Product Review: Lily Organics Skincare

September 14th, 2010 by Amelia

A few weeks ago, I featured Lily Morgan as our Queen City Pretty. Lily is the Head Farm Hand and CEO of Lily Organics Skincare based in Colorado. I had the opportunity to test the products from Lily’s farm and they are AMAZING.

Coming from a background of six generation farmers, Lily has the knowledge and experience to provide individuals a true natural beauty experience. Lily Organics Skincare is the first and only skincare company to become a USDA certified organic grower.

It’s absolutely refreshing to know the products that are touching your face haven’t been sitting on shelves for months. They are 100% FRESH off the farm! There are never any synthetic chemicals added and the line is cruelty-free. All full size products are presented in GLASS bottles.

This line is one of the most fabulous lines I’ve discovered recently.  I have really dry skin and I found that Lily Organics Moisturizing Cream solves this problem. Lily was right when she said this cream was formulated to end all dry skin problems. Love it!

Organic_moisturizing_cream-tn

Lily Organics and it’s founder, Lily Morgan, stand behind the product line by offering a 100% refund if you do not see skin improvements in 30 days.

Lily Organics Skincare receives Pretty in the Queen City’s stamp of approval.

“Quality comes from dew fresh ingredients from organic farms. Quality comes from the head, hearts and hands of people, like me and you. Quality is developed over several decades of love, heart, and hard work. Quality is classic. Quality is purity. Quality is honest. Quality is a gift from Mother Nature. ” ~Lily Morgan

There is no denying, this line is definitely QUALITY.

La Ishá All-Natural Skincare:Product Review

September 8th, 2010 by Amelia

La Ishá is the first all-natural skincare company devoted to women over the age of 35 and while I am not yet 35, I ADORE this line.” Safe & Effective, Natural Skin Care For Women Who Refuse To Be Defined By Their Age…because a woman shouldn’t have to sacrifice her health to stay beautiful!”

Not only are these quality products but the founder has a fantastic mission. Read more about Sharon Gnatt Epel here.

I have personally used several products from the La Ishá line and am so excited that I had to immediately share this review with you

Breast SOS

Breastsos

Finally, a product to support the beauty of our “girls”!!! This synthetic free serum “helps tone, firm and rejuvenate chest and breast area, fade age spots, hyperpigmentation, and minimize appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and skin-creases. Ingredients include organic pomegranate seed oil, which has been documented by international scientific research to support good breast health”.

Whether you are a bride preparing for your big day and that beautiful low-cut dress or you are recovering from breast surgery, Breast SOS will nourish your skin while improving the overall color, texture and eliminate fine-lines. I love the idea of using this during your monthly self-examination. Pamper yourself while staying aware of changes to your body. I personally have begun using this product and love it. It’s a must-have for all women!

Orange-Coconut Skin Polish

Skinpolish
I love sugar scrubs but this sugar-based polish is the best one I’ve used in quite some time. After each use, my skin was left feeling refreshed, smooth and absolutely glowing. It smells fabulous and easy to use. The sugar crystals work to remove the dead skin, then melt away once mixed with water to reveal beautiful smooth skin.

This is one skin polish that should go on everyone’s wish list! Christmas is right around the corner you know?!?! Oh, this skin polish was also recently featured on ABC News in a segment about “Eat,Pray,Love” (the movie)

La Ishá:Timeless Beauty

September 7th, 2010 by Amelia

When evaluating your life experiences, do you ever stop to think about how you came to the very moment you exist in? What led to that moment? What lessons have you learned along the way? This interview got my wheels turning. For me personally, I believe that every single thing happens for a reason (cliche’ I know) and we may not understand the “whys” at that moment but when you see your purpose unfold, it all makes complete sense.

These are not questions that La Ishá founder, Sharon Gnatt Epel has to answer daily. She knows exactly what led her to the success she has today and her story is truly amazing. I am thrilled she took the time to share the La Ishá story and a few personal beauty tips along the way.

What inspired you to create your skincare line?
I relocated to Denver from northern California in 2002, and quickly discovered that from my complexion’s perspective I had moved to skin hell! Life in the beautiful state of Colorado is a perpetually good hair day for those of us prone to the frizzies, but the combination of low humidity, high altitude, and exposure to direct sunlight (over 300 days a year) aged my skin so rapidly that I hardly recognized myself a mere 6 months after the move. I looked around me and saw that pretty much everyone was suffering from similar issues: dehydrated skin, uneven pigment, significant lines, skin creases and wrinkles, and age/sun spots that appeared on people who seemed way too young to have them.

I struck up conversations with women I met in the supermarket, the post office, the hairdresser, etc. in an attempt to figure out what remedies people were using to help their skin, and came up empty handed! No one seemed to have a good solution. I also got a strong sense of the apprehension many women were feeling about looking older, not just on an emotional level, but a practical one as they were convinced that their appearance was sabotaging their ability to compete with their younger counterparts for jobs. Some took out loans for facelifts and eyelid procedures that they hoped would improve their chances for employment and make them feel better about themselves, but not everyone has the financial means, emotional support system or desire to undergo invasive surgical techniques to accomplish this.

Another “inspirational” factor in creating my skin care line was the emergence of research suggesting that women have unknowingly been poisoning themselves in order to look good. The phthalates in many beauty preparations were linked to breast cancer and birth defects, and synthetic chemical preservatives identified as the second most common cause of skin irritations. It seemed ridiculous to me that women should be endangering their health and paying such a high price to look good, yet I was definitely among those beauty junkies who had been doing so, blissfully unaware of the consequences.

It was only after my son sustained 2nd degree chemical burns during a rafting expedition (be sure to read The La Ishá Story on http://la-isha.com/library/story.php) that I was introduced to clinical essential oil therapy. I witnessed his miraculous recovery and wondered what effect these natural substances would have on relatively minor skin problems like mine, and how they could be incorporated into a daily skin care routine to produce continuous, long term benefits.

I signed up for classes, studied online, consulted with experts in the field, and eventually wound up experimenting on myself. When my friends noticed the drastic improvement in my skin and asked me what I was using, I knew I had something significant to offer everyone.

If I were to peek in your makeup bag, what would I find?
Concealer, eyebrow pencil, lipstick, Zambeezi organic lip balm and a travel size of La Ishá Nutrient Rich Face Crème.

Other than basic skincare, what three treatment products do you recommend?
While the La Ishá Timeless Beauty Face Collection provides the basics for everyday skin care, we offer several unusual treatments that are exclusive to La Ishá. The first is Breast SOS: this groundbreaking, patent-pending formula is designed to support the beauty and health of the breast and décolleté. This is an area that so many of us forget to address, and living proof of the precautions we have or have not taken to prevent sun damage. Breast SOS helps tone, firm and rejuvenate the chest and breast area, fade age spots, hyperpigmentation, and minimize the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and skin-creases. It can also restore a tighter, springy resilience to the skin that many women may not have seen in years. The ingredients in Breast SOS have been documented by international research to support good breast health and fight free radical damage. Because it is so healing and emollient, many women have used it to speed up their recovery process after breast surgery, and prepare the skin for breast reconstruction.

Our Natural Age Spot Eraser is another staple in our anti-aging skin care arsenal. It is used to gradually fade age and sunspots without the use of hydroquinone or other harsh synthetic chemicals. Because it is so gentle to the skin, it is ideal for women of color who cannot use chemical bleaches that damage the underlying pigment. Most women find that their age and sunspots have either disappeared or are greatly diminished within 30 to 60 days of regular use.

La Ishá Pomegranate Moisture Booster is another must have product. An adaptogen and incredible skin rejuvenator, it can be added to any face cream or moisturizer that you are already using to supercharge its’ moisture content, help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, even out skin tone, improve skin texture, and provide protection from free radicals. It is customizable moisture that can be adjusted as needed. It is exceptionally effective in combating the dryness caused by cold winters, low humidity, the use of forced-air heaters, air conditioners and the gradual reduction of our skin’s natural oils as we mature.

Each bottle of La Ishá Pomegranate Moisture Booster contains approximately 300 drops…because you use only 1 or 2 drops at a time, it is also extremely cost effective. It has become a staple for me and I use it religiously.

You devote your life to improving the lives of others thru your skincare line. At the end of the week, what do you do to pamper yourself? Because I usually work long hours, I don’t always have an opportunity to pamper myself, even over the weekend. In lieu of this I try my best to meditate at least twice a day, carve out an hour to work out every morning, and get a deep tissue massage once a month. I also love to dance, and recently took up West Coast Swing. It makes me happy and I believe that this has a direct effect on my outlook as well as my appearance.

Do you have a spa/salon service that you can’t live without? If so, what is it and where do you go? Unfortunately I currently do not, and have not had a favorite since the fabulous aesthetician who used to do my European facials retired some time ago. I am still searching! Any suggestions?

Who is your beauty icon? When I think of beauty icons I think of Catherine Deneuve, the actress who was the spokes model for Chanel No. 5. To me she was as much the embodiment of timeless beauty, elegance, femininity and grace at 65 that she was at 35.

What is your beauty product must have? That’s easy: my Pomegranate Moisture Booster because it serves multiple purposes. When combined with crème or moisturizer it adds emollience…yet when applied (neat) directly to adult blemishes, it dries them up in record time.

What is your personal definition of Beauty? Physical beauty is so subjective…just like fashion trends, it is usually defined by the culture a person lives in…but for me true beauty has taken on a different universal meaning: I see beauty in people whose charisma and appeal seems to emanate directly from the soul; the kind of person who radiates a happiness and positive outlook that infects everyone lucky enough to be in his or her path. To me true beauty looks kind, warm, humble, compassionate and respectful of others. All you have to do is think back to the last time you met someone whose actions and behavior altered your initial impression of their appearance, and you will know exactly what I mean.

Any last words? For most of us there seems to be a connection between the way we look and the way we feel about ourselves. This is a lesson I learned from my late mother, a very beautiful woman who did not age well in the traditional sense of the word. She once told me that as she got older, her diminishing good looks affected her perception of herself, and this in turn robbed her of her self-confidence.

I founded La Ishá as a tribute to women everywhere, as a vehicle to help nurture and cultivate the timeless beauty that I believe resides within all of us. Feeling as beautiful on the outside as we are on the inside seems to make it a little easier for us women to venture out into the world; it bolsters our self-confidence and puts a spring in our step. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month (October), La Ishá will be donating one bottle of Breast SOS for each bottle purchased in both September and October to the American Cancer Society’s Look Good Feel Better program. Please join me in supporting our girlfriends, mothers, sisters and daughters who are post surgery and in need of our help.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sharon also shares with me “I think that my training as a concert painist gave me the best preparation for the demands of being an entrepreneur. Pianists are by necessity self-discplined;we put in many hours of solityar practice, learn how to put our egos aside in order to benefit from our mentors’ critiques, and ultimately, unlike other instrumentalists, have ourselves to rely upon when we perform. We have to provide our own motivation, be ready to make significant sacrifices in order to hone our craft, and keep our eye fixed on the objective in the face of naysayers, competition and our own competition.”
All I can say is WOW. As you all know, I adore products but even more-so, I love products with a story and a fabulous mission behind them. Sharon definitely has a story to tell. The creation of La Ishá is one of the most inspirational stories I have ever heard.
No wonder she is getting attention from media outlets such as Fox News, CBS News, San Diego Examiner, Denver Magazine and most recently was featured in the “Eat, Pray, Love” Segment on ABC News featuring La Ishá Orange-Coconut Skin Polish (which by the way…I LOVE)
I hope you all check back soon for my review on La Ishá . It’s a fabulous line that I adore and completely give the Pretty in the Queen City stamp of approval!
Backstage Beauty Tips from the Emmys
September 5th, 2010 by Amelia
From London to Ireland to New York Fashion Week to the Emmys, Charlotte based makeup artist Jodi Riley is an EXPERT in assisting women gain the flawless skin they’ve always desired. Jodi is a National Makeup Artist for Laura Mercier and when not traveling the world, she is based out of Belk Cosmetics in Southpark Mall.
Jodi takes pride in teaching the techniques of Laura Mercier. She says “I want to give women the tools to achieve flawless skin and I strongly believe that skincare is an essential part of this”.
Jodi took a few moments out of her busy schedule to share a few beauty tips with us including her very own Backstage Beauty Tips from the EMMYS.
You travel the world, sharing your expertise. How do you pamper yourself after a long week? I go on a long run every Sunday. It is the perfect end to a busy week and the only time my blackberry is off.
What is your beauty product must have? That’s a tough one! I would say it is a toss-up between Laura Mercier Flawless Eye Serum and Face Shield SPF 40. EVERYONE needs an eye treatment; that is the best one I have worked with. I love the way it reflects light and instantly firms. Sunscreen is so important, and not just for your face.
What is in your make-up bag? Laura Mercier Lilac and Opal lip glaces, a Black Violet Kohl pencil and an Eyelash curler. I also love Laura’s Tinted Moisturizer Illuminating in Golden Radiance and Secret Finish Mattifying. I feel everyone needs one of each in their bag. I used them so much at the Emmy’s. The tinted illuminating moisturizer is like photo-shop in a tube. It is the perfect way to get a beautiful, dewy glow and minimize fine lines and pores at the same time. It also has an spf 20! The Secret Finish in Mattifying is my favorite way to cut shine in the right places and shrink pores down to nothing. I call it the “pore shrinker”. They are both AMAZING!
What is your spa/salon service you can’t live without? A pedicure every two weeks. It is a must as much as I am always in heels or running outside!
Who is your beauty icon? It is difficult to narrow this one down. I love Sophia Loren. She is beautiful and gets better with age. I also LOVE Susan Sarandon. I saw Susan at the Emmy’s after party. She is as beautiful as she was years ago; amazing skin and in phenomenal shape. She is confident in who she is and the perfect mix of modern and classic at the same time.
What is your idea of beauty? To me, real beauty is nothing you wear or put on your face. It is the confidence you have no matter what size or shape you are. It is what you do when no one is watching and how your treat others.
Any last words? Embrace who you are and also whatever makes you unique. I love freckles and natural rosy cheeks. Everyone can benefit from a little concealer, mascara and gloss. Less is more-go lighter on powder. Too much of anything is not pretty. Laura Mercier will often barely cover someone’s face completely with foundation; only the areas that need a little. Being happy makes you look younger.:)
How do you define Beauty?
September 3rd, 2010 by Amelia
What is beauty? Where does it come from? Some say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some see beauty as a physical attribute. Young and old alike yearn to be like the starlets they see on television. Hollywood is based around the glamour and beauty of the actresses that grace our screens. It took many years for me to determine what true beauty was. The beauty that is real lies within and it’s something we must accept before anyone else in our lives can.
I’ve talked to many teenagers throughout the years regarding their versions of beauty. It’s normally the same answer: the designer clothes, the new car, and the most popular students. It’s important for you, no matter your age, to realize that your size, race or even the cliques you were involved in at school are not going to separate you from going through fears relating to your own image. We all feel ugly at times. We all, at some point in our life, go through something similar.
No relationship can repair your self-image. Being the most popular in school is not going to further your life goals.When you step into a potential employer’s office, they will not ask what clique you were involved with. Your future colleagues are not going to base your relationship on what type of designer clothes you wore when you were younger. No one is going to care what kind of car you drove when you were sixteen.
It’s so important to realize what truly matters and that is the way you see yourself. If you think highly of yourself then everything else will fall into place. No one else can love you, respect you, or admire you until you feel that way about yourself.
So many teenagers are inspired by what they see on TV. As a former agent, I played an active role in the entertainment industry. I can say first hand that many of the people you admire are sad individuals. Not all, but many. How would you like it if your entire life was monitored? Any mistake you made or decision you chose is published in every magazine and broad-casted on every entertainment news show. The models in magazines that you envy are airbrushed. They have the same flaws we do if not more! It’s a business of constant judgment. Judgment that leads to eating disorders, addictions and even worse…suicide.
Keep in mind that we all came from a different mom and dad. None of us were meant to be the same. We aren’t meant to have the same body type, the same hair style or the same talents. We are all here for a purpose. Don’t overlook that and spend your life trying to live out the life of someone else. You only get one chance. We are accountable for our own decisions and you never want to go through life wondering “what if?”
Accept yourself. Love yourself. Know that the beauty you have is not in your physical characteristics but in your eyes. The love, compassion and life you have can be seen in your eyes. That makes you beautiful.
How do you define Beauty?
xoxo
kaplanMD:Beautiful, Healthy, Radiant Skin~For Life
September 2nd, 2010 by Amelia
Hello my Pretties!
I have found another fabulous skincare line that I am so excited to share with you, kaplanMD, created by Beverly Hills Dermatologist, Dr. Stuart Kaplan. I had the privilege of recently testing this line and I must say, no wonder stars such as Kate Beckinsale, Sienna Miller, Mariska Hargity, Minnie Driver, Anne Heche, Emmy Rossum and Aisha Tyler trust Dr. Kaplan and the kaplanMD brand. It is FABULOUS.
kaplanMD is the only skincare line formulated to focus on three types of anti-aging: time, environmental damage and natural hormonal progression. Each product includes kaplanMD‘s exclusive Phytogenic Triactive Complex.  This combination of Soy Isoflavones, Grapeseed Extract and Black Cohosh promises to firm your skin, protect against free-radicals and help reverse the sign of skin aging.
I tried the core skincare items as well as additional products from thekaplanMD line. It’s all fantastic but I want to focus on three specific products.
*kaplanMD Revitalizing Toner*
Revittonerkap
Dr. Kaplan created the Revitalizing Toner as part of the daily skincare routine. I am currently on medication that gives me menopausal symptoms so I definitely understand the frustrations of Hot Flashes among menopausal women. With that said,what I love about this product is you can spritz your face with this toner during a Hot Flash! The toner instantly cools and minimizes redness thanks to Licorice, Chamomile and Aloe Vera concentration. Not only will you revive your skin with this toner but it is great to have on hand during those unexpected and embarrassing Hot Flashes.
*kaplanMD Perfecting Serum*
Kaplanserum
According to Dr. Kaplan, his Perfecting Serum firms skin up to 60% in as little as two weeks. I have not used this product for that length of time but I will say within a couple of days, I noticed a more even skin tone and my skin felt so smooth after application. I would suggest using this serum right before your make up application. It’s a fabulous primer!
*kaplanMD Cell Renewing Microfoliant*
Kaplanmicrofoliant
This exfoliant immediately restores the glow to your face. The key ingredients of pineapple & papaya enzymes, Jojoba Beads and Date Seed Flower are combined to provide your skin nourishment. My skin is luminous thanks to Dr. Kaplan’s Cell Renewing Microfoliant.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dr. Stuart Kaplan is a Beverly Hills dermatologist and has been in private practice for over 25 years. After graduating New York University after only two and a half years, he went on to graduate from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, with honors. Dr. Kaplan has been recognized for his achievements by many organizations over the years and has been presented awards from the U.S. Congress, American Cancer Society, American Medical Association among many others.

After years of researching the cause of aging skin, Dr. Kaplan identified three types of skin aging. Rather than focus on one type, he created a line that treats all three.

Every kaplanMD product contains no less than 10 key ingredients that delivers a balanced diet to your skin with each application.

Pretty in the Queen City can be added to the list of kaplanMD followers. kaplanMD receives our stamp of approval!

HydroPeptide:Scientific Beauty Made Simple

August 29th, 2010 by Amelia

I have a FABULOUS new product line to introduce to you. As you know, I review many skincare lines and it’s very rare to try an anti-aging product and receive immediate results. I  am absolutely thrilled to say, it exists!

I know, I know…..you are saying to yourself “she’s not old enough for anti aging products” Well…I HOPE that’s what you are saying to yourself. haha. In any case, I do have dry and uneven skin tones and feel it’s important to take care of your skin no matter how old you are and I have found a product that WORKS.

HydroPeptide was created in 2004 by Louise Peck, PhD. It became one of the first skin care companies to incorporate peptides into every product. I feel the need to go into further detail on exactly what a “peptide” is. (Hey, even I had to research it further!)  According to Justin Dotterweich, PR director of Hydropeptide, Peptides are small protein fragments that nourish, repair and send neural messages. Layman’s terms:it helps relax deep wrinkles. For those of you who love injectables, say good bye to the needles and hello to a product line that is based around science AND nature.

Hydropeptide

As I have only used sample size products thus far, I do not know the long term effects. Less than a week ago, I began using HydroPeptide’s Anti-Wrinkle Exfoliating Cleanser and Anti-Wrinkle Brightening Toner. Upon the first use, I immediately saw a more clear complexion. My face was glowing! (in a good way) My skin was smooth, beautiful and refreshed. I also used the Eye Anti-Wrinkle Dark Circle Concentrate. Since a young age, I have always had visible dark circles under my eyes. I noticed a slight difference immediately and expect even more improvement as I continue to use the product.  There are other products in the HydroPeptide line that I look forward to trying, especially the Anti-Wrinkle Polish & Plump Peel and the Instant Peptide Miracle Mask.

HydroPeptide recently has been seen in publications such as Fitness Magazine, Life & Style Magazine, American Spa, DaySpa, Skin Inc and is the winner of many 2009 and 2010 beauty awards from DaySpa, Fitness and Prevention.
