Skin Care Essentials: What’s in your Beauty Regimen?

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Confused about all the ingredients to avoid in your diet? Have you heard about the benefits of White Tea…a powerful antioxidant or Hyaluronic Acid… a protein based enzyme that holds a thousand times it’s weight in water that helps maintain our skin’s moisture balance? Both are GREAT ingredients found in many skin care products, but what other ingredients are in your skin care regimen?
There are many great products lines available to choose from but how do you know what’s best and what to avoid? Well, to start with the #1 skin allergen is synthetic/ artificial fragrance and a few others are artificial color, mineral oil (petrolatum) used for slip and glide and water binding properties, lanolin (sheep oil) also used for slip and glide and the like. Yet, so many skin care lines have wonderful ingredients such as White Tea, Green Tea, Hyaluronic acid, Lactic Acid, Salicylic Acid, powerful vitamins and other antioxidants, etc. but then add in artificial fragrance, artificial color, mineral oil, lanolin and the list can go on. Do you really need cleanser, scrub, toner or moisturizer to have artificial color in it? What point does it serve! Any time you see the word “parfum” or “fragrance” on the ingredient list do you no how many ingredients make up that scent? Yes, mineral oil is water binding, but it does not allow the skin to breathe thus clogging slin pores and trapping in dirt, grime, pollution, makeup, sunscreen and so forth which in turn can cause break outs and skin reactions. Are you allergic to wool? Many manufacturers use Lanolin for slip and glide in makeup and skin care products, even blush. If you have an allergy to wool and there in Lanolin in the product you may really end up with “rosy” cheeks!
CAPRICIO SALON & SPA ONLY uses DERMALOGICA, the #1 rated professional skin care product line in the world. FREE of the above listed allergens and many others. Visit our salon or Dermalogica’s website for more information!

Color Fading: How to keep your color bright and beautiful!

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Tired of spending hours at the salon just to watch your hair color wash down the drain? Read the following blog to find out more about what causes color fading and how to prevent it!

There are two common causes for color fading: using a shampoo that contains harsh sulfates and a high concentration of salt or exposure to environmental elements like the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. Some of the most popular drug store products-even those designated for colored hair- may cause color fading, and even when you’re indoors the sun can cause color to oxidize, thus resulting in a faded, dull look.
Listed below are a few steps you can take to achieve lasting color and prevent further fading:
  • Purchase professional shampoos and conditioners that are specifically formulated for color treated hair. Redken’s Color Extend product line contains a low salt content and a sulfate-free surfactant system. Redken’s Color Extend Sun line contains a combination of potent sunscreens and antioxidants. Both product lines will prevent color fading and sun damage.
  • Wash your hair every other day instead of daily. Use cool to cold water to prevent any color from rinsing out, as warm or hot water opens the hair cuticle allowing color an easy escape. Cold water keeps the cuticle closed and encourages healthy, shiny hair.
  • Deep condition the hair approximately one week before your color treatment, and directly after. The added protein and moisture will prep your hair, resulting in a more even color result. Similarly, salon treatments such as Redken’s Pre-Art or Chemistry Systems bring the hair back to its natural pH level, locking in color and leaving a bright shine.

Hair Extensions: The “Celebrity Craze” hits the Milwaukee area

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Do you dream of having long, beautiful hair? If you’re anything like the majority of the population, you do! The latest celebrity trend- hair extensions- is becoming increasingly popular in the Milwaukee area. Women love the luxury and allure of long locks, but most don’t possess the length, volume, or patience to continuously grow their hair…not to mention take care of it! Extensions are a sure-fire way to get a celebrity look without the wait!

All About Extensions

According to, “The dream of long hair perfection is often met with great difficulty. Environmental factors, stress, chemical treatments, and burden on the hair tend to worsen its condition.” Many women are choosing to forgo the work, opting to create the illusion of long hair with various types of extensions. Hair extensions are the ideal way to semi-permanently thicken or lengthen hair or create trendy strand effects.

At Capricio Salon and Spa, our talented staff of extension specialists use both Cinderella and HairDreams Extensions. Both brands use 100% human hair and are bonded to natural hair strands. Each strand is attached individually, allowing for precise placement and optimal matching between the extension and natural hair. Extensions are available in all lengths, colors, and textures, and can be used to cover the entire head or a select area.

The Process Behind Celebrity Locks: Extension Application

The extension specialist at Capricio Salon and Spa require that an initial consultation be completed before extensions are applied. In this complimentary consultation, your stylist will discuss length, texture, color, and price. He or she will also match your hair color to the extension swatches, and discuss any steps you should take in order to prepare your hair for it’s latest look.

All extensions are shipped to order and individualized. At your application appointment, your stylist will begin by sectioning the hair. Next, the extensions will be bonded to the natural hair strand individually. If it’s a funky-colored- strip you crave, it may only take your stylist a few minutes to apply the hair. If you want long, full hair, an entire application takes anywhere from three to six hours or more. Bonded extensions can last for five to six months if cared for properly, and normally cause little to no damage to natural hair color or texture.

A few hours later…and voila! You’ll have beautiful, soft, luxurious hair. At home, it’s important to take good care of extensions. In order to maximize results, extensions should be shampooed and conditioned gently but sparingly. Gently brush or comb the extensions, and rough-dry using your fingers and a blow-dryer. Avoid pulling on your extensions, as improper removal could damage your natural hair.

The Alternative

If you’re looking for extensions that are a little more “flexible,” consider meeting with one of our stylists to discuss clip-in extensions. This variety of extensions are also available in all colors and textures, and are hand-sewn. The best part about clip-ins? They’re versatile! If you’re bored with your hair, simply clip then in for a night on the town. If you love your short cut but wish it could be long for a special occasion, clip-in extensions are an excellent way to change your look without a long-term commitment.

Japanese and Keratin Relaxers…The latest trend in silky, straight hair

Recreate your hair’s texture the way you want it with an expert thermal

relaxing/reconditioning treatment from Capricio Salon and Spa.  Thermal relaxers permanently straighten your hair and can cut blow-drying and styling time in half.  The process is safe for most hair; improves its feel, softness, and shine; and leaves it completely manageable.

Q. Why does thermal relaxing cost so much?

A.  Thermal relaxing/reconditioning is very time consuming.   The process takes from three to five hours. During that time your thermal specialist’s day will be totally consumed with processing your hair.  But, the results last for months and ultimately save you many hours of blow-dry styling. Everyone that gets one thinks they are a great investment.

Q. How do thermal relaxers work?

A.  First, the designers at Capricio salon use deep conditioners along with a chemical that safely relaxes the structural bonds within the hair shaft to allow the hair’s curl or frizz patterns to be restructured.  Once these structural bonds are relaxed, the stylists use heat to “fix” the hair shaft’s structural bonds in this new, straightened structure.

Q. Will a thermal relaxer damage my hair?

A.  When performed by the highly-trained designers at Capricio Salon, the thermal relaxing process will not harm healthy hair.  The process is designed to leave hair soft and manageable. Some color-treated and slightly lightened hair can be relaxed using this process; some cannot. Ask your stylist for details and an expert opinion about whether your hair can be treated using this technique.

Q. Will I be able to get my curl back?

A.  After a thermal relaxer treatment, your hair will need to grow back out to restore its original texture.  You can, of course, style your newly straightened hair any way you like (for example, you can curl your hair with a curling iron), but the process cannot be reversed to restore the original texture to treated hair.

Q. What is the prescribed post relaxer care?

A. For 72 hours: NO shampoo/conditioning NO ponytails, pulling hair back, or tucking behind ears

NO clips/rubber bands. NO sunglasses on top of head. NO hats. NO humidity NO working out

NO chemical services on hair for one week.

Q. How long does it last?

Depending on your hair type, the tightness of your natural curl, and hair length, the out growth will need to be treated in six to nine months. In other words, twice a year.

Q. What is the cost of follow-up treatments?

A.  Retouching takes the same amount of time as the original process (three to five hours) and requires the same amount of product.  It also takes even more skill to protect the previously relaxed hair.  The cost of retouching is therefore the same as the initial treatment.

Q. Can my hair be colored after a thermal relaxing treatment?

A.  It is best to have your hair color done prior to thermal relaxing, so that the entire hair shaft has an even porosity. Then, a week later, you can return to the Salon if your color intensity needs adjusting.

Threading Hair Removal- What was old is new again!

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

threading6What is threading?
Threading, one of the oldest methods of body hair removal, is popular in India and the Middle East. It is also used in some western beauty parlours. Threading involves rolling twisted cotton threads over untidy hairlines and plucking out the unwanted hair. One reason for its continued popularity is that it is so much healthier for the skin and doesn’t result in ingrown hair.Unlike laser hair removal, threading is a temporary and not permanent method of hair removal. However, threading provides clients with long-lasting smooth skin and is relatively pain free!
Threading is believed to have originated in Turkey. Called khite in Arabic and fatlah in Egypt, it is used for removing hair from the entire face, including the eyebrows, the upper lip, the chin and the cheeks. Beauty clinics in many countries- including India- employ skilled practitioners of this ancient art. In the West, some cosmetologists favor eyebrow threading over other methods.
threading6How is threading performed?
In threading the practitioner holds one end of a cotton thread between his teeth and the other in his left hand. Its middle part is looped through the index and middle fingers of the right hand, and the loop used to trap unwanted hair so that it can be easily plucked from the skin.

Though the threading method of hair removal is used mostly in the facial area, it also works on the body parts lower down – from the belly button to the pubic bone and the toes. But remember that threading is an intricate art that must be performed only by a skilled practitioner, and that it takes months to achieve proficiency. Nothing is more painful than threading perfomed by an inexpert hand.

threading6Advantages of threading
Threading has several advantages over other methods. It is not only an inexpensive method of hair removal, but also fast and far less painful than some other options. It is a convenient method for removing hair from areas like the eyebrows and face and its effects last from two to four weeks. One of the best features of threading is that it is suitable for even skin that is too sensitive for laser hair removal or waxing. It takes no more than 15 minutes to get both brows done, which makes eyebrow threading particularly popular. And as no chemicals are involved there is no risk of a reaction setting in.
