Does my hair look old?

Redken's Time Reset Collection

Hmmm… could what I thought were cowlicks actually be crow’s feet?

Redken, Zotos, Phyto and Alterna seem to think so. They, among others, are now serving up shampoo, conditioners and beyond for those whose hair gives away their age.

Time Reset by Redken promises to “reverse years of damage and combat six signs of aging.” Despite the fact that I think my hair is quite youthful, thank you very much, what flat-iron-using, hair curling, highlight-gettin’ woman hasn’t done “years of damage” to her locks?

Other Anti-Aging Hair Care collections include Phyto Phytodensium Anti-Aging  and Alterna Caviar Anti Aging, as well as Zotos’ Age Beautiful line.

I tress-tested Redken’s Time Reset Shampoo, Conditioner and Youth Revitalizer and let me just say, it makes my hair feel like silk. As in soft, shiny, utterly manageable silk. Don’t even think of skipping the Youth Revitalizer, it’s the work horse of the trio, serving up deep conditioning paired with peptides and ceramide that promise to repair lack luster locks. The products retail from $13 to $20 with in-salon anti-aging services offered at select Redken salons for about $40.

And let’s face it, you don’t have to be an old dog to appreciate a new beauty trick.

Glam Peepers: My Faux Lash Flirtation

Friday, August 27th, 2010

You can’t throw a pebble at a red carpet event, reality show or mascara commercial without hitting a pair of false lashes.  Eva Longoria doesn’t appear to leave the house without ‘em, Ashley Greene slays with hers and Alicia Keys heads to the Shu Uemura Tokyo Lash Bar at Barney’s New York for her fix.  Semi-permanent lash extensions have been growing in popularity since the U.S. imported the concept from Asia several years ago, so this week I’m reporting back from these beauty trenches with my own faux lash experience.

Ashley Green at the 2010 MuchMusic Video Awards

Lashing Out

At the salon, I opted for mink lashes in a medium length (I’ve had the long ones before; they’re halloween-esque) and requested that extra lashes be applied to achieve additional volume as well as length.  These upgrades increased the rate from $135 to just over $200.

My lash expert led me to a private room where I lay down on a spa bed as she applied tape to my lower eye lashes; this keeps the glue applied to the lash extensions from adhering to lower lashes.  Next, with my eyes closed, the technician applied individual lashes to my upper lash line using tweezers; the fake lashes were bonded to my real lashes using surgical glue.

The technician alternated from one eye to the other to give the glue used on each eye a chance to dry during application.  After about 40 minutes, my lashes were done. (Disclaimer: The woman I go to is a true extension expert; many salons will tell you extensions take up to two hours to apply.)  She removed the tape and gave me a sneak peek at her handy work.

I checked out my new lashes in a hand mirror and found longer, fuller and totally natural looking lashes batting back at me. My husband didn’t notice the change per say but he did ask if I was taking “pretty pills.” Mission accomplished.

The goal is long, but natural looking lashes.

Built to Lash

Unlike classic lash extensions, semi-permanent lashes are said to last up to several months. Ask anyone who has actually had them, including me, and they’ll divulge that several weeks is more accurate. After a few weeks, the extensions begin to fall out and a touch-up is needed.  So while many of the fake lashes remain for several months, in order to keep the lush look expect to go in every few weeks for significantly less expensive touch-ups, think $50.

To help lashes last be sure to skip hot showers for 48 hours post extensions and forego mascara all together.  (You won’t miss it.)

While there are water-based brands of mascara that can be used on lash extensions, once you apply a coat of mascara to your lashes it can’t be removed without the risk of encouraging some of the faux lashes to fall out. This means, if you apply a coat of mascara today, you’re stuck with that same coat of mascara for the next few weeks.   Not pretty.

Faux Lash Dos and Don’ts

-Do use a heated eyelash curler (not a mechanical one) to refresh extensions that have begun to droop after several weeks.

-Don’t use mascara or, if you must, opt for water based mascara such as Max 2 Special Mascara Gold and apply from mid-lash to tip avoiding the root.

-Don’t rub your eyes.

-Don’t use oil-based products around the eyes including make-up remover and eye cream.

-Do feign ignorance, as in “No nothing has changed about me, just trying out new mascara.”

Glam Weddings: Wine Country Romance

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Recently I rounded up the boys  — big  one and small ones — for the wedding of my good friend and PrettyCity staffer Johanna Engel Grange at The Carneros Inn Napa.  After one very long flight (true any time you travel with a two year old) we arrived in San Francisco and traveled by car to Wine Country.

The Farm at Carneros Inn

And that’s where the trip became magical… and oh-so-glamorous. We checked in to an expansive “home” at The Carneros Inn with 2,400 square feet of indoor space and 1,400 square feet of outdoor space including an upper deck. That evening, little ones in bed, my husband and I enjoyed al fresco dining and massages on the upper deck in a blissfully humidity-free climate. Ahh-mazing!

Perched atop acre after acre of apple orchards and grape vines, The Carneros Inn, in the Carneros appellation, draws modern inspiration from the rustic barns that likely once graced this farmland.  Pastoral meets luxe with hilltop pools, a top-notch spa (my esthetician divulged that Rachel McAdams had stayed — and stunned — at the Inn recently) and staff that seem to descend from nowhere the moment your heart even begins to desire anything.

The Downstairs Deck at our Carneros Inn "Home"

And since my friend is clearly fabulous (you can check out her chic ramblings daily here), the fabulous wedding of the century was sure to follow. Boy, did it.  Inspired by her non-traditional yet oh-so-chic shindig (Wedding cake? Too traditional.  Bouquet Toss? As if.), I asked the new Mrs. Grange to share the secrets of her glamorous wine country wedding for those of you getting married soon… or just someday.

Why Napa?

The French Laundry

“We are both huge fans of great food and great wine. Napa has both! It’s one of the only areas with several Michelin star restaurants including the ever famous French Laundry. We also wanted to find a domestic destination that provided a gorgeous backdrop but was still accessible for our closest friends and families.”

Cake Toppers waiting to be customized from Goosegrease on Etsy.com

Loved the cupcake bobble heads;  where did you get them?

“I loved them, too! Etsy.com was my go-to resource. Not only can you get loads of creative inspiration but you are supporting local artists. I knew I wanted some sort of topper so I searched “wedding decoration” and stumbled upon them. They are made of wood and all custom. I sent in a picture of the two of us and she asked me questions about our wedding day outfits and replicated the bobble heads to look exactly like us. Eye color, hair and all.”

Daisy + Lime Green Fall in Love

The lime green and daisy yellow colors were striking. Where’d you find the decor and what inspired you?

“You always hear interior decorators say that when designing a room, pick a focal point and build around it! For me, it was my wedding shoes. I found these satin, lime green stilettos and literally, died. I wanted to break away from tradition and vibrant wedding shoes are all over the blogs I researched such as 100 Layer Cake, Green Wedding Shoes and Style Me Pretty. Then it was back to Etsy for DIY tissue poms, candy tables, place cards and more. I really had a blast planning it and he was very involved, too which made it fun. I wanted Vintage meets Anthropologie. It also helps when you have the perfect canvas to begin with and the Carneros Inn is dynamite.”

Nina Electra 4" D'Orsay Stilettos in Apple Green

The lime green heels you wore were fantastic and unexpected.  What other details made your day unique?

“I have to find another occasion to wear these gems. They were so fun to wear. And since we were going with a green and yellow theme, I enjoyed the little accents from designing a candy bar for our guests as take home favors to our place cards which were granny smith apples with guest names pinned on the apple to picking our florals. I even found vintage Napa map cufflinks for Jack to wear on the wedding day; courtesy of Etsy again. One particular part I enjoyed was shopping for the hotel guest’s welcome bags. We wanted to say thank you for supporting us but do it in a way that represented the valley so we scoured stores for mini cheeses, crackers, splits and more. Shopping for mini anything is always fun.”

The Life of the Party

The champagne cupcakes were amazing! How did you discover them?

“Truth be told I could eat cupcakes everyday and am a huge fan of Sprinkles but we couldn’t get them to Napa so our cupcake vendor had a lot to live up to. Enter Sift Cupcakes. A local favorite and a preferred vendor of our destination, the Carneros Inn. It was taxing but we did two taste tests and the champagne cupcakes were my favorite. After all, it is wine country and who doesn’t like a little bubbly?”

The Blushing Bride

You looked so gorgeous! What are your top pre-wedding beauty tips?

“My wedding day was the prettiest I have ever felt in my life, so thank you. I think the key to feeling your best is to know when to leave the party the day before. I was in bed at 10 and had only two glasses of wine so no hangover and no bags under the eyes! I still had the jitters so I made sure to eat and drink as much water as possible before the ceremony since it was outside. And it truly helps when you work with people who know what they are doing. My makeup artist was Julie Olson of Makeup Deluxe (check out her blog here) and Gray Gilligan of Salon 12  (I sent her images of Kate Hudson and she nailed it).  Doing your homework helps and so does including visuals. Other than that – a facial and a microderm and I was good to go!”

Yearning for Fall

Friday, August 20th, 2010

It’s a sickness, I suppose. While others are longing for the dog days of summer to continue, each August, as the kids go back to school, I find myself yearning for fall.

Fall is trees adorned with rich pumpkin and mustard colored leaves dancing in the wind. It’s Roasted Squash, Caramel Apples and Dark Hot Chocolate.  Fall is my timeless Gucci boots whose nude leather seems to grow in appeal year after year and a toasty camel coat worn only on the crispest fall days. It’s the crimson, fuchsia and berry lipsticks that line my vanity, beckoning fall.

It’s not fall yet but for those of you who, like me, yearn for it this time of year, I’ve rounded up my favorite transitional trends to take you from summer to fall in style.

Legs and Lace

Theory Double-Breasted Blazer, Cowl-Neck Knit Top & Leather Shorts from Neiman Marcus

I’ll admit, I’m not daring enough to wear brightly colored tights (plus, at 5‘9” I’d probably look more smurfy than stylish), but opaque tights in charcoal, black and chestnut are staples in my post-summer wardrobe.   Taking a page from the likes of Ruffian and Chanel, I think city shorts and textured, even lace, hosiery is just the way to beckon fall.

Kissing Fall

NARS Fall 2010 Collection

I can’t think of a better way to pucker up to my favorite season — even while outside temps swelter — than by sporting fabulous fall hues on lips. Nars is at the top of my list of makeup musts with a fall 2010 collection that boasts Rouge Basque, the ideal hue of brick red, First Bite, a pitch perfect auburn and Rouge d’Enfer, a creamy cranberry that is just so delish.

Inspired By Him

Diane Von Furstenberg Jonquille Top and Pinstripe Trouser

Menswear inspired looks may be of the moment but certain styles are truly timeless. Diane Von Furstenberg, the woman who invented the curve hugging wrap dress, has turned out a menswear inspired fall 2010 collection that exudes femininity.  Turns out the pinstripe trouser is not so short on sex appeal.

The Modern Mani

YSL's Belle de Nuit lacquer duo from French Vogue

Apparently less is not more, or so YSL would have us believe with their fall 2010 Manicure Couture collection, Rock and Baroque. The collection calls upon the classic French Manicure for inspiration. Sold in duos, hues such as Plum & Gold, Turquoise & Purple, and Fuchsia and Red are combined with striking contrast.  I find it utterly ostentatious and strangely appealing.

Do I dare? Oui, oui!  And you?

Glamorous Celebrations

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

Cake and presents are overrated so today, my birthday, I’m wishing for the time to indulge in some of my favorite oh-so-pretty pastimes and unwrap the prettiest of presents.

Bubble Bath Dough from Red Leaf

Bath + Bubbles

Maybe it’s a throwback to school days gone by, but there’s just something about big fat bubbles (paired with warm water, of course) that makes me feel positively giddy.  I’ll opt for Vanilla Buttercream Bubble Bath dough from Red Leaf for yummy, calorie free bubbles.

POP Pink Pommery

Toast to Me

Is it wrong that one of my birthday wishes is to soak all by my little ole self in a giant bubble bath while toasting me?  As a mom of two boys, time to be pretty and pampered is a rare luxury so today, I’ll pair said bubble bath with a 187 of rose bubbly from POP.  And yes, I just may sip it out of a straw.

GB Couture Necklace from Neiman Marcus

Birthday Flowers

What’s a birthday without bling? Let’s not find out.  I love GB Couture by Emily and Ashley because their pieces always make a statement; this flower chain necklace is no exception. When the doorbell rings, this is the kind of flower delivery that makes me squeal.

Tory Burch Nova Metallic Pump

The Right Foot

As I step into a new year, chock full of new opportunities and fresh energy, I plan to get off on the right foot, with the help of my good friend Tory Burch (a completely one sided friendship I assure you) and her classic pumps amped up with rock n’ roll edge.

What’s on your wish list?

No Chip Off The Old Manicure

Friday, August 13th, 2010

For some, people watching is observing others and their exchanges from a discreet, preferably al fresco, perch.  Shamefully, for me, “pretty watching”  would be the more apropos term; I’ve been known to hone my steely gaze in on the color of one’s lipstick, the crop of one’s ‘do or the hue of one’s mani.

No Chip Off The Old Manicure

Last week, while indulging myself in some harmless pretty watching, I noticed a stunning woman, immaculately dressed and groomed right down to her naked, unkempt nails. I felt an immediate sense of kinship with this nearly-perfect creature because, what mere mortal, after all, has time for the twice weekly manicures needed to keep traditional polish looking perfect?

Enter the No Chip Manicure, an in-salon mani quickly gaining popularity amongst the too busy to get to the salon weekly but must have great nails set.  The appeal includes the promise of no chips or dings for several weeks, the time saved from not going to the salon weekly (or more) and longer nails that won’t break as easily as natural nails.

What Is It?

There are several companies that manufacture the products used in what is commonly referred to as a “No Chip Manicure” including Axxium by OPI, Bio Sculpture and Shellac by CND.  The Axxium line includes some of my favorite OPI colors such as Lincoln Park After Dark, a blackish-purple, and Bubble Bath, the nude pink that I am sporting with my French No Chip Mani below.

My No Chip Mani After 10 Days

The No Chip Manicure is a gel overlay that is applied with a small brush to your natural nail. The process takes longer than a traditional manicure, 45 minutes to an hour, and also promises to last longer, think up to four weeks.

There are many shades available for No Chip Manicures although, unlike a traditional manicure, you can’t choose any hue under the sun.   And don’t even try bringing in your own nail polish, a No Chip mani can only be done with s special gel “polish” meaning you have to choose from the colors your salon has on hand.

 How is it done?

A No Chip Manicure begins much like a traditional manicure until it’s time to apply color. To apply color, the nails are usually slightly roughened and then the gel product is applied in stages.  First, a base coat is applied and cured under a UV light for up to two minutes. Next, the color itself is applied in two coats with each coat left to cure under a UV light before a top coat is applied.

One of my favorite things about No Chip Manicures — because I detest waiting and have been known to dash out of the salon before my nails are dry thus ruining my $15 manicure —  is that the second the manicure is done, nails are completely dry; like dig around in your purse for your keys, put on your seat belt, apply lip gloss dry.

The No Chip Mani promises not to chip, however, depending on how quickly your nails grow, even a manicure without a ding starts to look bad when two weeks later there’s a line of demarcation from your No Chip color of choice to new nail growth.  To remove the color you’ll have to go back to the salon where a 15 minute acetone soak promises to have polish lift right off.  In fact, even if you opt for a new No Chip mani in the same color, your previous No Chip will have to be soaked off.

Also available as a pedicure, No Chip Manicures are done exclusively at local salons and spas for $35 to $45 $50.

And while you’ll pay more for a No Chip Manicure, the return — pretty, shiny nails that look perfect for weeks — make this treatment a grooming investment worth considering.

Do tell — Are you going to give the No Chip a whirl or stick with polish that may chip but can also be changed easily?

Beauty and Style from across the Pond

Friday, August 6th, 2010

In the States, there’s a mystique attached to all things European, especially when it comes to beauty and fashion. So, in a quest to unravel the mysteries of European style, I traveled to London and Paris.  Here are the trends I unearthed across the pond...

Ballerina Flats at Topshop

Carrie was wrong

After reading several stories about how French women do everything in heels — and spending far too much time watching Sex and the City —I was convinced these graceful creatures viewed the world from a 4-inch perch. And while I did spot one uber-chic woman riding a bike in heels just off the Champs-Élysées, for the most part, ballerina flats and gladiator sandals seemed to be de rigueur for French women. The trend continued in London where I saw barely a woman in heels, perhaps because the city’s vast territory is best navigated via tube (the subway) or by foot. To prove the point,  I headed to the popular British chain Topshop, where  rows of Ballerina flats were plucked up by locals.

Bike Rentals in Paris

They’re fit

In Paris, we never once were served butter with our bread baskets, and the desserts weren’t terribly sweet. That must be why, as Mireille Guiliano so succinctly put it in her best-selling book,  French Women Don’t Get Fat.  (I think she should have named her book French Women Are Impossibly Thin.) Plus, walking and biking are preferred modes of transportation, with bike rentals available on main streets, such as the one we hit off the Champs.

I saw much of the same in London, where bike rentals are also big news with the launch of a new bike rental system, modeled after the Parisians. Overweight people appear to be few and far between in London, perhaps thanks to a more active lifestyle and “clean” diet. I stopped by the Reebok Sports Club at Canary Wharf, where men and women in business suits headed into the 100,000-square-foot facility replete with power plates, a ballroom dance studio, 42-foot climbing wall, restaurant, spa and bar.

Toni & Guy in London

Spas like U.S.

I couldn’t leave Europe without checking out their spas — not that I could have missed them, especially in Paris where I saw “Institut de Beauté” signs on every corner, including the Revlon Institut de Beauté located on the corner of Rue De Kepler, the street where my hotel was located. Not surprisingly, facials were popular in Paris, along with bronzing and detox offerings.
London, home to Toni & Guy, is the city of cool hair, so salons seemed to abound in Greater London where short choppy ’dos and long , ultra-layered locks are in demand. Lashes were also uber popular; I got “lashed” in London myself in honor of National Pampering Day.  The strangest trend I spied in England was the salons and spas that lined the storefronts at an indoor flea market of sorts in Sheffield, a city in South Yorkshire, England.

My son cozying up to Kate Moss at Madame Tussauds

The feeling’s mutual

Americans may be enamored with European style, but the truth is, Europeans think we’re pretty cool, too. From movies to celebrities to stores (think GAP, Sephora and Starbucks), all things American are popular in Europe, as well. I’d heard the French could be rude to Americans, but not once did I experience anything short of good-natured hospitality.

No need to even mention how polite the English are… remember the bicyclist in European Vacation? In London , one trip to Madame Tussauds Wax Museum — where wax likenesses of Michael Jackson, Jim Carrey and President Obama created bottlenecks — was enough to prove that they like us, they really like us.

La Tour Eiffel at Night
