Make Mine a Minx

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

I’ve tried the No Chip Mani (and loved it) and while the appeal of a manicure that always looks fabulous is unmistakable, testing polish hues and mani trends is all part of the job.  So this week, I returned to the beauty trenches to test drive the Minx Mani, a manicure that calls upon a flexible film applied through heat and pressure.

Photo from MinxNails.com

Minx doesn’t smudge or chip and some argue that it’s environmentally friendly since no chemicals need be used for removal. Just apply warm water or heat and these puppies peel right off.  Similar to the No Chip Mani, nails that have been Minxed require no drying time; a small detail that I simply adore. Plus, these babies can withstand just about anything from doing dishes to taking a dip in the pool, something I can’t say for traditional manis as mine so often chip and peel.

My Minx manicure began with all the traditional mani trappings minus the oils and lotions: cuticles trimmed, nails filed, hands washed, it was time to select my “design” of choice. I opted for a sleek and chic chrome that was very modern, and impossible to miss.

Photo from MinxNails.com

My nail tech swiped my nails with alcohol before heating up each Minx film under a heat lamp and lining each one up perfectly with my nail bed before applying. Using light pressure, the film is bonded to the nail and then a glass nail file is used to shape the edges and remove excess. The entire manicure took about 30 minutes.

While some salons and spas say that Minx lasts up to 10 days,  I did see some lifting at the edges on the fourth day.  A quick shot of heat from my blow dryer fixed that; I simply heated my nails with a fast blow and applied pressure to smooth any errant edges back down.

To me, Minx nails are like limo shoes —  they may not be the most practical option but boy do they make a statement. Minx can even be applied to artificial nails including acrylics and gels and is available in over 100 to-die- for designs.

Have you been Minxed? Which design is your favorite?

The “Perfect” Mani

Monday, September 27th, 2010

Last week’s talk of pink, purple and red lips here left me yearning for tips that followed suit. As if on cue, a package arrived from Perfect Formula containing a selection of Perfect Color lacquers in purples, grays and berries.

Today, Mani Monday, I opted for Deco ($15 at qvc.com), a deep, dark berry that I’ve fall-en in love with.

The Perfect Color in Deco

Perfect Color nail polishes are all Toluene, Formaldehyde, and Dibutyl Phthalate free, of course, and the thick brush makes for easy, even application.  (You may recall I named their Perfect Formula Strengthen & Seal Sheer Pink Gel Coat one of the Best Beauty products last year here.)

Oh, and I’ve saved a hue just for you. Leave a comment if you’d like to win a Perfect Polish in Post Moderne (pictured below).

Do tell, what’s the color tale on your talons this week?

Building Your Lipstick Wardrobe

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

How bold will you go?

Your LBD is hanging in your closet, recently dry cleaned and ready to dance.  You know which tees and heels pair perfectly with your favorite skinny jeans and you’re not afraid to use ‘em. But when it comes to lipstick, your usually stylish self is stuck in a rut; one that most likely involves lip gloss in some shade of peach, plum or pink.

This week, I’m breaking out one of my special talents – the ability to sport lips that are crimson, fuchsia, deep, dark purple and beyond – and sharing my secrets for moving from that safe shade of gloss to a sexy new hue that’s just right for you.

Even you can rock red lips

Rockin’ Red

There’s only one thing you need to sport red lips: confidence.  Contrary to popular belief, lips don’t have to be plump or perfect to rock red but you do have to “own” the look.  Lip liner is a must, as is lip primer and, of course, a quality lipstick that’s built to last. (Watching your red lipstick bleed hurts us as much as it hurts you.)

Step one: Exfoliate and moisturize lips.

Step two: Apply a coat of primer (I like Laura Geller’s Lip Spackle.)

Step three: Line lips with a nude liner or, if you’re super steady with those hands, opt for a red liner.

Step four: Fill ‘em in and get ready to flaunt ‘em.  For super long wear, blot lips with a tissue after step four, apply a translucent powder, and then fill lips in again with a crème or matte lipstick.

Katerina Graham in Haute Pink

Haute Pink

When it comes to hot pink lips, the Don’ts are more important than the Dos.

Whether you call it fuchsia, or magenta, the secret to wearing all shades of pink well is to skip the frost, gloss and sparkle. And yes, I’m talking to you. This advice applies to anyone between the ages of 12 and 82.

Hot pink lipstick works best in clear, crisp hues and matte or crème formulas.  Don’t wear hot pink lipstick with hot pink shirts, dresses, earrings, etc. You get the picture.  Don’t sport fuchsia with your animal print Roberto Cavalli, but do think of that “haute” pink pucker as an unexpected element to complement an otherwise understated outfit.

What's your purple personality?

Pucker up Purple

Deep, dark purple, from eggplant to aubergine, is very of the moment thanks either to the world’s recent obsession with vampires or our timeless infatuation with the lady as a vamp.  Unlike red and pink, I prefer to see this season’s purple as an imperfect stain on lips or a glistening gloss.

While the darkest skin tones may find vampish purples extremely wearable, even fair-skinned ladies can opt for this season’s uber dark lipstick look by applying a swipe of lip balm topped with a dark purple lipstick of choice. Apply both with your fingers to achieve a chic once-bitten look for lips.

To get the look, try Sephora’s Lip Attitude Star lipstick shimmers ($12 each) in Audacious Violet, a berry purple, Plum Vertigo, a sheer violet, and Cocoa Excess, a purple chocolate. Or, opt to shine on with Love Junkie Lip Junkie Lip gloss from Urban Decay ($19).

SMACK! That’s the sound of you kissing your basic, boring gloss goodbye.

Shine On

Sachajuan's Shine Spray

Perhaps it was the crisp white packaging that piqued my interest. Or the brand name, Sachajuan, and point of origin, Stockholm, that intrigued me.  Most likely, though, it was the promise of the product within that earned Sachajuan’s Shine Spray ($30) an instant spot in my daily grooming routine. Shine in a bottle? Yes, please.

This light styling spray creates definition while serving up hold and maximum shine. And, unlike some sprays I’ve tested, there’s not a hint of telltale flakiness left behind, just well behaved and brilliantly shiny locks.

Shoe Shine

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

Transitional shoes meet timeless polishes, taking you from season to season with ease. You may not be sporting cashmere sweaters or camel coats just yet, but you can raise fall looks without beckoning dropping temps. All it takes, my pretties, is a fresh pedicure and a pair of peep toe pumps or booties.

Loubs + Sephora's Mr. Right Now Lacquer

Aim high, I always say.

These Christian Louboutin Clou Noeud Spikes boast heels that are nearly six inches high, plus a sky high price tag to boot; get ‘em for $1,195 at barneys.com. What better to pair with nickel spike studs than Mr. Right Now from Sephora by OPI ($9)?

N.Y.L.A. + Zoya

Menswear inspired meets feminine fringe appeal in Sabie, a peep toe bootie with a 4 ½ inch heel from N.Y.L. A.  Combining a suede upper, rubber sole and reasonable price, these pair perfectly with Envy ($7), an of-the-moment green from Zoya. Get the booties for $99.95 at nordstrom.com

Alexander McQueen + Nars

Rock on, if you can afford to, in these Alexander McQueen navy leather peep toe pumps, adorned with crystal embellished skulls. I already own the perfect polish, Rebel Yell from Nars ($16), now I’m saving my pennies for the shoes.  I need more, more, more — they’re $929 at zappos.com.

Guess + Essie

Gray is the color du jour this fall, but here’s hoping it’s not the weather forecast favorite as well.

While I’m dreaming of Alex, I’ll be snuggling up to Georges, in these affordable gray leather Kilmari platforms from Guess; get ‘em for $84 at 6pm.com. And I just love the look of gray paired with purple, like Essie’s Demure Vixen ($8), an iridescent cocoa mauve.

What’s your favorite heel and hue for the season?

Mani Mondays: Cheap, Chic and Pretty in Pink

Monday, September 20th, 2010

Today I took my Mani Monday green in honor of October’s Pretty in Pink campaign. No, I’m not color blind; I choose green for all the cash pretties across the nation will save on their Pretty in Pink manis beginning October 1. Plus, I was dying to see if I could actually pull off the look and I have to say, I kind of love my Orly Enchanted Forest Green mani.

Going Green in Honor of Pretty in Pink

But what I love even more are these Pretty in Pink manicures; all just $31 for the 31 days of October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. And there are “mani” more where these came from at prettycity.com/pink

Scrub a dub dub, smooth skin in the tub

Friday, September 17th, 2010

The only way to maintain that pretty summer glow, or to sport a faux glow anytime, is to start with smooth, hydrated skin. And the first step to smooth skin is a daily exfoliating routine that promotes shedding the top layer of dead skin cells.

This week, I rounded up the best – and worst – body exfoliators after weeks of daily scrubbing and sloughing. All in all, I tested over 42 body scrubs to report back from the beauty trenches with my list of those to love, and those to leave at the beauty counter. All of my recommendations contain sugar as an exfoliant rather than salt; I recommend skipping salt scrubs because they can provide quite a sting to places that see regular action from a razor, such as legs.

Bourbon Bubbler Kentucky Whiskey Body Scrub

Love it! Bourbon Bubbler Kentucky Whiskey Body Scrub from Farmhouse Fresh

Bath time turned blissful when I took a dip with Farm Fresh’s Bourbon Bubbler Kentucky Whiskey Body Scrub.  This paraben and sulfate free product slathers on rich and creamy and offers up mild exfoliation ideal for banishing dead skin from head to toe. The scent is divine; brown sugar and bourbon pair up to create an experience that is simply intoxicating. Get it for $32.50 at farmhousefreshgoods.com

Leave it. Suave’s Apricot Exfoliating Body Wash

Always on the hunt for bargain beauty buys, I was eager to test this drugstore exfoliator and its promise to “help remove dull looking skin. “ And at just $3.99 for 12 oz., Suave’s Apricot Exfoliating Body Wash fits into any budget. Unfortunately, that’s about all it does, offering up nominal exfoliation and a faint scent without staying power.

Zambian Coffee Body Scrub

Love it! Zambian Coffee Body Scrub from Crater Lake Company

I admit, I’m a coffee lover. And yet, I find the thought of slathering it on my skin slightly unappealing. Pair this with the homegrown nature of the packaging that houses Zambian Coffee Body Scrub and I wasn’t an instant fan of this boutique brand.  A quick twist of the container’s top changed my mind, revealing the rich scent of coffee, pure cane sugar and coffee absolute.  Top notch ingredients such as shea butter, soybean oil and coconut oil serve up intense hydration. As a bonus, coffee, an antioxidant, is said to help reduce the signs of cellulite and scavenge free radicals.  Get it for $19.95 at craterlakecompany.com

Leave it. Red Flower Bioactive Berry White Peat Exfoliant

I’m traditionally a huge fan of the Red Flower line and in fact, can’t think of a product of theirs I haven’t loved, until now.  I also admire Red Flower’s commitment to offering botanical products; this scrub is free of synthetics, parabens, dyes, petrochemicals and sulfates. Not as admirable was the messy nature of the Bioactive Berry White Peat Exfoliant which upon opening was separated into an oily floater and a salty base that didn’t mix well in the packaging or on my skin.

Sugar Mama Honey Scrub

Love it! Sugar Mama Honey Scrub from Glowology

No need to have a bun in the oven to love Glowology’s skin care line designed for pregnant women and those with sensitive skin. Baby soft skin is the promise and Sugar Mama Honey delivers thanks to fine sugar whipped into a honey and she butter base.  Not nearly as exfoliating as some of my other “love it” scrubs, this product is ideal for sensitive skin, serving up gentle exfoliation and rich hydration perfect for the me time every mama deserves. Get it for $26 locally Neiman Marcus or online at NoodleandBoo.com.

Are you a regular scrubber? Team Sugar or Team Salt? Leave a comment below (include your full name but don’t post your email address, please)  or send a Tweet to @prettycity with your fave and you’re entered to win today’s Freebie Friday giveaway from my “love it” picks, Glowology’s Bubbling Exfoliant and Crater Lake Company’s Whipped Cream and Sugar Body Polish. (One winner receives both products; see my editorial policy here.)

It’s just another Mani Monday…

Monday, September 13th, 2010

The Bangles have been running (or walking like Egyptians) through my head all weekend in anticipation of today, Mani Monday.

Mani Mondays are my excuse, and yours, I hope, to head out to my favorite salon or spa and head home with 10 sparkling fingernails shining back at me.

I flirted with the No Chip Mani a few weeks back, as you probably read here, but ultimately decided that I’m a variety is the spice of life kinda girl.  While weekly manis are a must, twice weekly manis are even better.

Zoya's Alegra

Perhaps it’s the ups and downs in the weather here —  one day 60 degrees, the next 80 degrees – that have me vacillating between dark hues that are suitable for fall (like Estee Lauder’s Blue Dahlia Pure Color Nail Lacquer pictured below) and sparkling spring manis, such as Zoya’s Alegra (above).

Estee Lauder’s Blue Dahlia Pure Color Nail Lacquer

My manis, like this transitional weather, are ever changing. Yet even for a creative woman like me, inspiration can be hard to find, so I turn to a few of my favorite polish sites to get ideas and craveable color combinations:

Do you have a favorite polish for Fall?  Tell me all about it and you’re entered to win a collection of my faves from Zoya, OPI, Essie and more.

Three ways to win:

1)      Post a comment with your faves on my blog below — please include your full name but don’t post your email address, please.

2)      RT (retweet) the following “Fall’s must have polish for @prettycity … your faves here

The 411 on Freebie Fridays

Friday, September 10th, 2010

Maybe it’s from being raised in a family of six, I’ve always loved to share my goodies.

As a child, I’d happily share just about anything, even an unopened lollipop that I only had one of, with my siblings. As I grew up, I often shared clothes and more with my little sister; lending her even new clothes with price tags still dangling from their unworn hems and sleeves.

With the exception of my husband, my motto is, what’s mine is yours. (Sorry ladies, can’t lend out the hubby- he’s a keeper.)  And who better to share with than you?

After all, even after spending day after day testing beauty products for nearly ten years, there are still more products to test.  And I’m not too proud to enlist your help.
