In a Clutch: Top 5 Beauty Products to Party Pretty this New Year’s Eve

Wednesday, December 29th, 2010

As you grab your favorite clutch and head to some fabulous New Year’s Eve celebration, you’re undoubtedly met with the beauty dilemma that’s been plaguing women for decades. How can you fit everything you need into your favorite night out purse?

Have no fear, my pretties, I’ve come to the rescue with five mighty — albeit diminutive — beauty musts that can fit into the smallest of bags yet yield big beauty returns. Grab my top five portable beauty musts, and 2011 is bound to be beautiful.

Compact Complexion Perfection

Throw Benefit’s “Some Kind-A Gorgeous To Go” compact in your clutch; at just .09 oz. you’ll have plenty of room for your other beauty musts.  Some Kind-A Gorgeous To Go is a translucent, foundation-like skin perfector that evens skin tone. Get it for $15 at Sephora.

Glow to Go

Now that you’re matte in all the right places, keep the glow going all night long with Tarte Cosmetics’ Bronze to Go in “Park Ave Princess.” The bronzer comes with a Glam on the Go Kabuki Brush to apply the mineral powder bronzer and is small enough to slip into even the tiniest of evening bags. Get the set for $15 at tartecosmetics.com.

Keep it Clean

Enjoy the red wine. Sample the Tuna Tartare. But please, don’t forget to carry the most affordable beauty-must on my list: Colgate’s Wisp Plus Whitening, portable toothbrushes that I don’t leave home without.  Get a pack of four for about $2.50 at local drugstores.

Shine On

Your 15 minutes aren’t over yet so you’ll want to make sure you’re still sparkling as the night goes on. Grab one (or more) of the mini lip glosses from Lipstick Queen’s “15 Minutes of Fame” mini lip gloss set and tuck them away. These shiny glosses come in five just right hues including “3 Minutes,” a wearable apricot;  “ 5 Minutes,” a pale peach; “ 11 Minutes,” a vibrant purple; “12 Minutes,” a deep rose: and “13 Minutes,” a crisp fuchsia. Get the set for $14 at spacenk.com.

Tame Your Wild Ways

Girls may wanna have fun but indulge too much  - think heavy dancing, drinking or other sweat-inducing activities – and you’re sure to end up looking more raccoon than ravishing. As the clock strikes midnight, and you’re smoky eye shadow starts heading south, clean up with Ulta’s Ready to Take Off Eye Makeup Remover Pen. Use the makeup remover pen to touch up small mistakes or smudges without taking off the rest of your eye makeup; get it for $8 at Ulta stores.

5 Ways to Keep Feet Pretty Despite the Weather

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

Pretty feet are a year-round must!

While a chipped manicure may hurt you in the board room, a bad pedicure, or lack thereof, is more likely to hinder you in the bedroom.

After all, there’s nothing sexy about funky feet, especially when cooler weather hits, skin dries up, and said feet start scratching the sheets as you slip between them.

Here’s my go to guide for keeping your toes oh-so-pretty no matter the season.

At Home Maintenance

Between spa pedicures, maintain pretty feet with exfoliation and hydration.

Skip the scary at-home razors (you know the kind most salons aren’t even supposed to be using) and opt instead for Microplane’s Foot File; $14.95 and up at microplane.com.  This best in class implement banishes dead skin with aplomb, without risking serious injury at the hands of razor blades and too sharp edges.

I recommend the XL Pro ($24.95), because cartridges can be replaced, making this tool an investment that will smooth skin for years. Ladies, this is the best tool I’ve found for removing dead skin at home, but be sure to use it on DRY skin, not after — or in– the bath or shower.

Keep feet hydrated by applying a rich cream at bedtime, every night, and donning socks to seal in the moisture. While you can purchase special pedicure socks that work well, if done nightly, plain old gym socks should do the trick.

While some beauty insiders swear by using Desitin (yup, the baby butt cream) on feet, I prefer Theraplex FT Exfoliating Foot Emollient Callus Treatment, an ultra-rich product specifically designed to treat callused feet ($21 at theraplex.com).  One of the reasons this product really works is that the ingredients include Salicylic Acid, meaning that while moisturizing your feet this product also helps banish dead skin.

Top 5  Polish Tips

Whether polishing up between professional visits or opting for DIY pedicures, here’s my list of five tips you’ll need to get the job done.

1)     Swipe soon-to-be polished nails with polish remover to banish excess oils before applying lacquer.

2)     If polish separates in the bottle, roll the bottle between the palms of your hands to mix the lacquer without causing bubbles.

3)     Correct polish blemishes with an oh-so-handy manicure mistake eraser; I like the “Erase” pen from 5 Second Nail, sold for about $6 at CVS.

4)     To dry nails quickly when you have places to go – or if, like me, you’re just impatient – aim a blow dryer set on cool at toe nails for about 30 seconds and then apply cuticle oil.  BE sure to hold the dryer at least 6 inches away from toes so that polish doesn’t bubble.

5)     To remove dark polish, use an acetone polish remover. Acetone-free removers are gentler to nails but won’t do as thorough of a job at removing richly hued lacquers.

What’s your secret to keeping winter skin pretty?

Resolve to be Glamorous

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

Yesterday’s post had me thinking of 2011 and what it will bring. It seemed only natural to make a list.

I know some women have “30 before 30” lists. That ship has sailed.

And don’t even hint at a “40 before 40” list. I will throw down.

Besides, I’m not a wait-‘til-the-end-of-a-decade kind of girl. When I want something, I want it yesterday. So for 2011, I’ve come up with a list of things I want to do constantly.   Because life is way too short to wait until next year to get everything you want.

The 2010 Chicago Beauty Sample Sale

Party.  Whether it’s big beauty bash, an intimate dinner party, an impromptu celebration for my kids and their friends, a girls’ night in or even a romantic dinner a deux, for me 2011 is going to be a year full of weekly celebrations.

What will you create this year?

Create.  I love to create but life gets too hectic and it’s just easier to opt for the tried and true instead of risking the unknown. This year, I’m pledging to pour my heart and soul into creating something new every week. And promising to enjoy the act of creating even when the results are less than perfect.

Perfect. And speaking of perfect, why not do everything better? Even the things I’m already really damned good at. Especially the things I don’t think I know how to do better. Perfect myself weekly, daily, constantly.  Once I’ve perfected something, I’ll no doubt discover that there’s even more room to grow.

Risk. Go out on a limb. Fail. Try again. Be risqué.  Obey Eleanor Roosevelt, “Do one thing every day that scares you.”

What will every second of every minute of 2011 bring you?

Glamorous Giving: Clean up for Christmas

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

Every year, in the days leading up to Christmas, I help my two sons go through tucked-away toy bins and rarely opened drawers where cars and action figures that have fallen out of favor and once-favorite clothes that are now too small go to hide.

As they (somewhat begrudgingly) part with these once loved items, they’re filled with excitement about what’s to come and comforted that their toys and clothes will find new homes with someone who needs them.

For those of us whose age is in the double digits, out with the old in with the new can be a harder concept to grasp.  While you’ll undoubtedly help your children donate or pass down out of use items, when is the last time you edited your own closet? And let’s not even talk about your makeup bag!

‘Tis the season to take a realistic look at what you wear (and don’t) as well as your makeup bag and medicine cabinet and pass along items you don’t use to someone who may need them more.

Here’s how to get started…

Out with the old, in with the new!

If the Shoe Fits

Then by all means, wear it but if it doesn’t fit, it’s time to pass it along. After going through my own shoe wardrobe I was forced to acknowledge some bad choices. Shoes that didn’t really fit (but were on sale, natch) and shoes that have never been worn because they didn’t fit my style, were set aside for Soles4Souls, a Nashville-based Shoe Charity, that distributes shoes, free of charge, to people in need around the world.

Several pairs of pumps in hand, I contacted Elizabeth Kirk, Public Relations for Soles4Souls, and asked if they really wanted pumps with four-inch heels? She assured me that all shoes, big and small, flat and ridiculously high, are put to good use. As Kirk said, “We provide shoes to many different types of outlets, including Dress for Success and women’s abuse shelters.  Nothing feels better than for a single mom of four to get a nice pair of pumps for church or for a job interview.”

Pretty colors, but not right for me.

Medicine Cabinet Makeover

Gently used or never used makeup and toiletries can be put to good use at your local women’s shelter. That means the drugstore lipstick that looked like a totally different shade in the package or the moisturizer that made you break out can find a new home with a woman who may just love the products that didn’t love you.

Gently used items can be also be swapped online at makeupalley.com, but I feel best knowing I’m passing along unused impulse buys or ill-chosen color cosmetics to someone who may treasure my toiletries.

Many women’s shelters accept gently used items while others require that personal care items be sealed. If you don’t know of a local women’s shelter, log on to ywca.org and find a local office. YWCA is the largest multicultural women’s organization in the world; they assist women in times of crisis.

Here’s to starting the New Year with a clean makeup bag, a well-edited wardrobe, and a clear conscience.

Pretty Parties: Holiday Chic and Cheer at Tease Salon & Spa

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010

Last Thursday, the PrettyCity staff gathered at Tease Salon in Chicago for our annual holiday bash.

I’d been told that the space was amazing, but decadent & delicious is more like it. The walls are drenched in pink and the word “Tease” spelled out in rhinestones adorns the space over the reception desk. The picture below doesn’t nearly capture the sparkle of it all.

Thousands of hand-placed rhinestones spell "Tease" above the reception desk.

The owners decorated the space themselves, even refurbishing and reupholstering the vintage furniture that lends comfort to the salons many nooks and crannies.

A pink silk pillow rests on a black and white chaise lounge as you enter the space paired with the chicest Christmas tree dressed in hues of black, silver and pink.   Even the angel atop the tree got a tease-tastic makeover; think a custom corset and a little padding in the brassiere.  After taking it all in, we were ready to get gorgeous, too.

A pretty pink, black and silver Christmas tree in the entry way.

The staff at Tease was so charming and gracious, serving us a range of delish cocktails (one of the staffers moonlights as a bartender at local hot spot) and appetizers from Sabor Saveur.  We indulged in makeovers, hair styling, lash extensions, brow shaping, manicures and more.

Best of all, the large open salon space was just right for a private party— we all sat in plain view and within chatting distance, watching each other opt for smoky eyes, pin up girl waves, fluttering lash extensions and the like.  Being within earshot was a must, since one of our L.A. PrettyCity reps had flown in for the party; she entertained us all with celebrity gossip that even US Weekly has yet to print.  As an added bonus, the ladies at Tease gifted us with goodie bags courtesy of Moroccan Oil – already a PC favorite.

If you’re anywhere near Chicago, I can’t think of a more glamorous party destination.

Tease Salon & Spa is in Pilsen at 1044 W 18th St. Phone: (312) 489-8170

Mani Monday: Sparkle with a side of Sparkle.

Monday, December 20th, 2010

Today’s mani is Orly’s Foil FX in “Shine,” a no-holds barred shade of metallic silver that swipes on without a streak in sight. (Two coats of “Shine” yielded the incredible sparkle you see here.)

Orly FX Shine

And because I’m a firm believer that more is more, I added a coat of CND’s Effects in “Silver Sparkling.” (I wore other CND Effects here and here.) I’m not even sure it made a difference, but it certainly didn’t hurt.

Then, I piled on tons of jewelry and had a very Rachel Zoe moment. It was all very glamorous.

Glam 101: How to get a gorgeous bun

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

Angelina Jolie. Jessica Alba. Taylor Swift.

Three glamorous celebrities with one thing in common, they know how to rock a bun.

For many women, hair is an integral part of what makes us feel beautiful, sexy. But glamour and sex appeal aren’t one in the same, so to earn your glam stripes you’ll have to know how to weave your magic spell (that’s how Webster defines glamour) without a single loose hair to toss over your shoulder.

Ready?

Angelina Jolie's Red Carpet Updo

If you’re hair is sparkling clean and full of bounce, by all means, wear it down. Hair that’s not recently washed is ideal for an updo. A touch of dry shampoo (check out our list of the best and worst here) at the roots can do wonders for hair that was washed yesterday.

Set.

Depending on what type of updo you’ll be doing, a little product can go a long way. Ruth Roche, Pureology’s Colour Ambassador and owner of RARE by Ruth Roche in NYC recommends hairspray for a sleek bun, texturizing spray for an unkempt chignon and a shine cream with hold to tame those little flyaways that may frame your face with unflattering fuzz, such as Pureology’s DryShine.

Go.

To get a sleek bun, start by parting hair as you wish and then using a paddle brush and pomade to get a sleek part. Pull the hair around the ears extra tightly to avoid flyaway hairs and tie hair in a low ponytail.

Apply hairspray to the ponytail and then braid half of the hair in the ponytail. Next, wrap the braided hair and the remainder of hair around the rubber band tightly and secure with two Goody Simple Styles Spin Pin ($5.99 at Walgreens), twisting one of the circular pins in at the bottom of the bun and the other at the top, being careful not to interlock the pins.

Jessica Alba at the 2010 American Music Awards

Flawless skin and smoldering eye makeup play up the glamour in a simple, timeless bun. Take a page from Jolie and Alba’s books and opt for cat eyes and nude lips, complemented by glowing skin. Pair your favorite shade of nude lipstick with easy-to-achieve, dramatic eyes.

I’ve been told by many women that liquid liner can be tough to master and I agree. That’s why I swear by Urban Decay Ink For Eyes ($22). This easy to use cream liner is foolproof.

For flawless cat eyes, simply close one eye and apply the liner along the lash line using the brush end of the applicator. Pull the skin at the corner of the eye, with that eye still closed, and extend the liner just beyond the end of the lash line. Then, using the sponge end of the applicator, blend the liner in a sweeping motion extending to the outer corner of the lash line once more.

Add several coats of your favorite mascara and you are officially spellbinding.

Mani Monday: Polish, not Poison.

Monday, December 13th, 2010

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, glitter runs through my veins. This week, I’m sparkling once more thanks to Zoya’s Alegra ($7 at zoya.com), a rich-looking metallic fuchsia.

Alegra by Zoya

Not only is Zoya Nail Polish formaldehyde-free, the collection offers hundreds of colors that go well beyond basics.  The collection was created in 1984 when then-pregnant esthetician Zoya Reyzis foresaw the need for a nail polish free of harmful chemicals and carcinogens.  Nearly three decades later, the Zoya collection offers up high fashion hues with a healthy sensibility.
