Cause You’re Totally Forth Worth It

Monday, January 31st, 2011

Lately, I’ve been spending a lot of time in the Lone Star State, thanks to OPI’s soon-to-be-released Spring 2011 collection, Texas.

Hues include Guy Meets Gal-veston, Big Hair… Big Nails, I Vant To Be A-Lone Star, It’s Totally Fort Worth It, Austin-tatious Turquoise, Don’t Mess With OPI, Too Hot Pink to Hold ‘Em, Do You Think I’m Tex-y, Suzi Loves Cowboys and more.

Last week I took a trip to “San Tan-tonio,” and while the hue — a perfect honey tan — is stunning, it didn’t complement my winter-white skin, although, once the sun comes out, it’s sure to become a staple in my spring mani collection.

This week I opted for “Houston We Have A Purple,” a sheer fuchsia that I’m over the moon for.

Best of all, I have a few Texas-sized hues just for you.  Just leave a comment telling me what your favorite color from the Texas collection is or like this post on Facebook (below) and you may just be among the first to try the Texas collection.

Who wrote the book on beauty?

I thought I did, but apparently e.l.f. disagrees.

e.l.f.’s BeautyBook Lip Edition contains 12 lip shades, one liner and one lip defining brush and a step by step guide to “the perfect lips.”

Even I have to admit there’s some pretty handy advice within these pages, er, page.

You can pick one up at any Target for five little ole bucks, or you can leave a comment below, send me a tweet @prettycity or even post a comment on our facebook page and you get one of these babies for F-R-E-E.

You may remember we gave away five of these beauties last September, and this week I have 10 more to give away!  10 of my pretties are going to win this week’s Freebie Friday.

10 winners will be notified via message next Thursday by no later than 5pm CST.

Two New Eye Make Up Looks Made Easy

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

True Blue

Ever since beauty “experts” started calling blue eye shadow tacky (clearly sometime after 1970), real women have been looking for a way to drop a hint of blue into their makeup routines.  But blue eye liner can look current, and celebrities like Rihanna and Blake Lively are out to prove it. The key is to go blue on the lower lash line only while creating a bronze-hued smoky eye look on the upper lid.

To get the look, start by applying a cream shadow base on eye lids. Next, apply a cream shimmer from the lash line up to the crease. I like Julie Hewitt’s Shimmy in Cleo or Goldie ($22).  Using a powder shadow in brown, bronze or gold create a “V” horizontally, with one line of the V on the lower lashes and the other line in the crease of lids.

Now it’s time to go blue; pick a hue that complements your eyes. Brown eyes look great with Turquoise liner applied to the lower lash line, like Make Up Forever’s (MUFE) Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil ($16) while blue eyes are complemented by MUFE’s Iridescent Navy Blue and green eyes pop with MUFE’s Blue With Green Highlights on the lower lash line.  To finish the look, dab a touch of cream shimmer at the inner corner of the eye and blend it into the lower and upper lash line.

Angelina Jolie’s Cat Eyes

Easy Cat Eyes

Celebs from Angelina Jolie to Taylor Swift have been rocking cat eyes of late, but this trend dates back to Audrey Hepburn, Brigette Bardot and beyond.

The easiest way to create cat eyes is to use a thin pencil liner to draw a very small line from the corner of your lower lash up towards your upper lash at an angle. Then, apply liner to the upper lash, essentially creating a triangle at the outer corner of the eye.

Now, using your liner and very precise strokes, simply finish lining the outer half of the upper and lower lash line with liner as thinly as possible.

Next, using a liquid liner, trace over the triangle you created, using small strokes,  and apply to the upper lash line sparingly (if you wipe the liquid liner brush or applicator off with a tissue before using it, you’ll lessen the chances of making a mess with too much liner). Drying time is a must, so take 60 seconds to meditate — or curse yourself for being so adventurous with your makeup — while the liner dries.

More Eye Liner Tips & Tricks

-Always pull the skin taut with the one hand while applying eye liner with the other hand.

-Put away the black liner and opt for a dark brown liner instead which can me more flattering and more forgiving of small mistakes.

-Put eye makeup on before the rest of your makeup and use a Q-tip with eye makeup remover to clean up smudges. Once you’ve perfected your eyes, apply foundation, tint and or powder.

-Unless you are aiming for a dramatic look, liner should only be applied from the center of the lash line to the outer most corner of the lower lash line.

-To enlarge eyes, apply a dot of brown or black liner at the outer corner of eyes and a dot of iridescent crayon liner in white, gold, or silver at the innermost corner of eyes. Don’t smudge the outer eye liner; do smudge the inner eye liner.

Brunch at Brundage’s

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

It may not be Barney’s, but brunch at home can feel equally glam with the right touches (and some help in the kitchen).

For me, having brunch calls to mind my favorite vacations. Lazy mornings spent beachside after eating chocolate croissants and mouth-watering pineapple at Grand Lido Sans Souci in Jamaica.  Discovering off-the-beaten-path boutiques and artisans in Montmartre, Paris after enjoying a decadent breakfast of pain au chocolat and coffee.

Weekends are the perfect time to create a spirit of escape; and all it takes is a generous spread of organic muffins, juices, seasonal fruits, parfaits and light, fluffy omelettes to start your adventure.

Organic Apple Cinnamon Muffins

My boys love these Organic Apple Cinnamon Muffins from Dr. Oetker; the mix calls for the addition of milk, eggs and oil but I leave out the oil and add ½ cup of applesauce instead.  I feel good about feeding these to my kids thanks to ingredients like organic wheat flour, organic sugar, organic dried apples and organic cinnamon. I melt one tablespoon of butter and brush it on the muffins before dipping them in a ramekin with cane sugar, cinnamon and brown sugar.

Meet the Chef

While my two year old helps with the muffins, my oldest son goes to work preparing yogurt parfaits with organic yogurt, organic bananas and crushed Cracklin’ Oat Bran. They’re easy for him to make and delicious–  the ideal combination of sweet, smooth and crunchy. Plus, by helping out, even in small ways, the boys are learning some basic kitchen skills; they’ll undoubtedly call upon these skills to charm their girlfriends one day.

Your next vacation may be the epitome of glamour, but here’s to making quiet Sunday mornings just as magical.

Mani Monday: Do Something for You

Monday, January 24th, 2011

Over the weekend, I read a survey claiming that 3 out of 4 men could care less if women have manicures; meaning a manicure doesn’t make a woman more — or less– attractive to a man.

I believe that. And I think it proves what I’ve always advocated; feeling pretty is something you do for you, not for a man… or anyone else for that matter.

OPI's Extra-va-vaganza

My husband regularly compliments my manicures and he was smitten with this week’s hue, Extra-va-vaganza from OPI’s Burlesque collection (two coats atop Essie’s “Lady Godiva”).  And while I think the hue is a fun change from the norm, it won’t become my go-to polish hue. I prefer red, black, grey or brown on a day to day basis.

So even though hubby loves this glittery copper, I’ll no doubt be back in Lady Godiva or Iron Butterly or Chanel’s Coromandel by mid-week. Because my manicures are for me, not him.

Freebie Friday: Time in a Bottle

Friday, January 21st, 2011

For the last several months, I’ve been worKing on reviewing anti-aging products for an upcoming “Love it or Leave it” story. Today’s freebie is a product line that is firmly entrenched on the “love it” team.

It’s called Youthology and I’m obsessed with their Dark Circle Eye Treatment ($24.99) and the Lift + Firm face and Neck Repair ($29.99).  While the Lift + Firm face and Neck Repair promises to turn back the clock, the Dark Circle Eye Treatment decreases dark circles and reduces the appearance of wrinkles. I’ve tried them both and I’m a fan.

Want to see the results for yourself? Shop the collection online at www.youthology.com or register to win this clock stopping duo in one of three ways:

There are three ways to win…

1) Like PrettyCity on Facebook and post a comment under the status post about this giveaway.

2) Follow me on Twitter @prettycity and tell me why you want, need, have to have these @youthology products.

3) Post a comment on my blog below.

The winner will be notified via message next Thursday by no later than 5pm CST.

Babies on Board

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

No, I’m not pregnant, but two of my favorite people are: My sister — she’s having a girl, yippee — and one of my dear friends, who is also a veteran PC staffer.

It was recently mentioned by one of my preggy pretties that when she came across the story I wrote a couple of years ago about being glamorous while pregnant (with boy #2) everything suddenly seemed  more relevant.  Yes, moms-to-be are even more obsessed than brides to be; and that bar is pretty high.

So for all you mamas-to-be,  today’s post is pulled from the oh-so-pretty archives with an updated shopping guide courtesy of the newly pregnant ladies in my life. Enjoy!

That's me when I was 30 weeks pregnant with boy #2!

There’s a scene in Knocked Up where Katherine Heigl sits atop Seth Rogen with tousled hair and heaving breasts (basically looking gorgeous) and declares, “I can’t do this!”

And that, in a nutshell, is what it’s like to be a pregnant woman.

You’re uncomfortable and insecure and the only thing you know for sure is that you surely cannot do this!

But while the next nine months will test your relationship with your significant other, your willpower and your nerves, not only will you be able to master this new-mom thing, you’ll do it with patience and panache.

I would know. I’m currently 30 weeks pregnant with my second son. And I’m here to help you get through the next nine months feeling great and looking incredible.

You can do this — day by day, week by week, trimester by trimester.

Impromptu Party: National Popcorn Day

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

With all the excitement about the New Year and the Golden Globes, not to Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, you may not have marked your calendar for today —  January 19, National Popcorn Day.

We marked the day at my house with an impromptu party for the boys (one of the New Year’s Resolutions I made here was to make life a party), with several flavors of popcorn, “pop” and movies, of course.

My 9-year-old son brought home a bag full of Benny the Bull’s popcorn from a recent Bulls’ game; if you’ve been to a Bulls game recently you know why we found it a comical, albeit strictly decorative, addition to our popcorn party. The popcorn buffet included good old-fashioned buttered popcorn, white cheddar popcorn, caramel popcorn and dark chocolate, caramel popcorn.

The dark chocolate popcorn was a breeze to make and was a huge hit with the boys; it would make an ideal treat for Super Bowl Sunday, too.  You can make the chocolate, caramel popcorn from scratch (the recipe is here) but since there’s delicious, organic caramel popcorn at the store, and too few hours in the day, I find it much more glamorous to “cook” with shortcuts.

I simply melted dark chocolate and mixed it with the caramel popcorn.  Little things like this make a big impression on my boys and they’ll probaly make a yummy impression on your boys, both big and small, too.
