Mani Monday: Cheap and Chic

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Spring is in the air, or at least in the pages of my favorite glossies, so while I can’t actually don a sun dress just yet, my mani is marching unapologetically into April.

"Boom Boom" from Sinful Colors

Sinful Colors sent me a package of their Spring hues and this true hot pink, called “Boom Boom” caught my eye. So pretty!

Best of all, you don’t have to wait for things to warm up to heat up your digits; just walk into your local Walgreens and pick up “Boom Boom” for the bargain price of about two bucks.

Glam Beauty Advice: Pretty as a picture

Learning how to take glamorous pictures is a skill no woman should be without. After all, thanks to Facebook, your most embarrassing shots can easily be tagged and stored for the entire world to see.

Here are the top 4 ways to look pretty as a picture:

1) Posture: Stand up straight, shoulders up, suck in your belly. Never leave arms squashed against your sides — that can create a flabby look in photos – put hands on your hips to create a pretty gap between your arms and your body.

2) Smile: Touch your tongue to the back of your teeth to relax your smile in photos and don’t attempt a full blown toothy-grin. A gentle, relaxed smile with some teeth is generally the most flattering look.

3) Neck: This is where so many good women fail. Always, always, always extend your neck, and then stick your chin out and tuck it down the tiniest bit. It will feel awkward, but it will look great in pictures. You will be the one woman in the group who does not have a double chin.

4) Makeup: If you know, or suspect, your picture will be taken, opt for a foundation with great coverage (I like Dermablend Smooth Indulgence Foundation for serious coverage), a matte powder, nude or light-hued lips with a bit of shine and classic eye makeup. Be sure to re-apply powder as needed to cut down on shine. (And if you do get caught looking bad in a photo, just be thankful that you’re not famous.)

Need help looking glam at your next photo-op? I’ve got some of my favorite picture perfect makeup products all ready to share with you (including Dermablend Smooth Indulgence Foundation). To win, find your ideal shade of Dermablend here and then leave a comment below, send me a tweet @prettycity or even post a comment on our facebook page (be sure to share which dermablend shade you need) and you may get a basket full of pretty-as-a-picture products this time next week.

Winners will be notified via message next Thursday by no later than 5pm CST.

Skin Care Myths and Musts

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

Great skin is the foundation to looking gorgeous and while most of us want great skin, few of us know what to do to get it.  This week. I’ve rounded up the top skin care myths and musts; mistakes you’ll want to avoid on the road to complexion perfection, and steps you’ll have to take in order to get — and keep — great skin.

Skin Care Myths and Musts

Myth: Drinking water hydrates your skin.

Drinking plenty of high quality water is essential for good health. And being healthy certainly plays a role in looking good, but to hydrate the outermost layer of skin, it’s moisturizer, not water, that is a must. This is where a solid four-step skin care routine comes in.

Must:  Cleanse, Exfoliate, Moisturize and Protect.

You don’t need a vanity full of lotions and potions to achieve your best complexion, but you do need to incorporate four essential steps in your skin care routine.

Step one: Cleanse skin, morning and night, with a gentle cleanser that is ideally suited to your skin type.  Not sure what your skin type is? There are four common skin types: normal, dry, oily and combination.

To determine what type of skin you have, wash your face and then wait one hour. Next, press a separate piece of tissue paper to your chin, cheeks, forehead and nose. If there is oil on each piece of tissue, your skin type is oily; if there is oil on a few pieces, such as the forehead and nose, you have combination skin; flakes, without oil, indicates that your skin type is dry; no oil and no flake (lucky you) means you are blessed with normal skin.

Step two: Exfoliate morning or night after cleansing skin. Skin can be exfoliated mechanically (such as sloughing off dead skin cells with a loofah) or chemically, by using enzymes or acids to loosen and release dead skin cells. As we age, exfoliation becomes even more important because aging slows down the process of cell turnover, increasing the need for exfoliation to eradicate dullness.

Exfolikate® Intensive Exfoliating Treatment

And while many facial exfoliants are ideal for daily use, you should customize your routine to your skin type. Sensitive skin may be best served by twice-weekly exfoliation; if skin appears dry or irritated you may be exfoliating too often or with a product that is too harsh.  I’m a huge fan of celebrity facialist Kate Somerville’s ExfoliKate Intensive Exfoliating Treatment, also available in Gentle or Acne-specific formulas ($65 at katesomerville.com).

Must: Incorporate a “retinoid” into your skin care routine.

One type of exfoliant that has been nearly universally endorsed by skin care experts is retinoids, sold by prescription under brand names Renova and Retin-A. But the benefits of incorporating a retinoid into you skin care routine go far beyond dependable exfoliation. Retinoids can also help reduce or clear up acne, improve collagen production, lighten hyper pigmentation and improve skin texture.

Step three: Moisturize with a skin-type specific moisturizer. Even woman with oily-skin should not skip this step; rather opt for an oil-free noncomedogenic moisturizer. Apply moisturizer to damp skin, such as when your face is freshly washed and still damp.

Beverly Hills Skincare Daily Age Revolution

Myth: You only need to apply sunscreen when it’s warm and sunny outside.

Must: Use sunscreen every day, without fail.

That’s the essential fourth step in a comprehensive skin care routine. Every morning, apply a broad-spectrum, low SPF sunscreen of at least 15 that contains titanium dioxide or zinc oxide.

The Skin Cancer Foundation has noted that the penetration of UVA rays through car windows may place drivers and passengers at risk for skin cancer.  That means that even something as innocuous as your daily commute can be causing wrinkles and putting you at risk for skin cancer due to sun exposure. Cloudy days are no better; clouds do not block UV radiation, in fact UV rays can be magnified by clouds.

If money is no object, try Daily Age Revolution SPF 15 from Beverly Hills Skin Care ($104.95 at bevhillsskincare.com), not only does it protect skin from sun damage but this product also enhances skin texture, hydration and elasticity thanks in part to a proprietary milk peptide complex. Budget minded beauties will like Cetaphil UVA/UVB Defense Facial Moisturizer SPF 50 ($13 at Walmart) which calls upon micronized titanium dioxide to protect skin without the tell-tale white film that some physical sun blocks leave behind.

The Youth Pill: Scientists at the Brink of an Anti-Aging Revolution

Myth: You can’t delay the aging process.

Just ask Demi Moore, recently spotted on the beach with a copy of The Youth Pill: Scientists at the Brink of an Anti-Aging Revolution, a book by David Stipp about exciting new research and breakthroughs in aging on the horizon. I’m not talking about turning back time, of course. But simply putting some basic skin care musts into action – like using retinoids and sun protection — can help you look younger for longer.

Mani Monday Giveaway: OPI Wrote the Book on Sparkle

OPI Holiday 2010 Burlesque Collection

I pulled up this Mani Monday from the archives because I’ve got a brand spanking new Burlesque giveaway for you today!

Late last week, I was nearly blinded by the sparkle emanating from a package of polishes that arrived courtesy of OPI and their “show stopping” new collection, Burlesque.

After lining up bottle after bottle of glittering lacquer on my vanity, I figured I’d take at least one of the new hues out for a spin on Mani Monday. After all, ‘tis the season.

I picked two shining new hues, “The Show Must Go On,” a ruby red and “Glow Up Already,” a golden glitter fest, and headed to a favorite local spa. Somewhere between cuticle trimming and paraffin, I joked to my manicurist that after I left, I’d be followed by 8-year-old girls, who would, no doubt, envy my dazzling tips. Little did I know…

OPI's "The Show Must Go On"

The first fan of my new manicure was me; I was literally fascinated by the way the sunlight captured the glitter in the polish, as if miniscule specks of diamonds adorned my fingernails. (For toes, I opted for two coats of “The Show Must Go On” plus one coat of “Glow Up Already.”)

As my manicurist oohed and awed, a few of the spa’s clients stopped and stared. Yup, these colors get noticed. At dinner, my husband declared the new hue his favorite color ever, he said it was the red that caught his eye, but what man doesn’t notice a little sparkle?

The only downside? Between my eyelash extensions and my glittery “The Show Must Go On” manicure, there may be a chorus line somewhere calling my name. Is it too much? Hell no! In the wise words of OPI, “Bring on the Bling.”

You can pick up Burlesque at your fave local salon/spa or you can leave a comment below, send me a tweet @prettycity or even post a comment on our facebook page (be sure to share wish hue you la-la-love) and you may get one of these babies for F-R-E-E.

Winners will be notified via message next Thursday by no later than 5pm CST.

A sparkle a day keeps the doctor away

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

Lorac sent over  their gorgeous new Multiplex 3D Eye Shadow Palette, literally bursting with scrumptious, sparkling shadows in a six metallic hues including Opalescent Gold with Pink Pearl, Amber Bronze with Gold Pearl, Red/Brown with Green Pearl, Silver with White Pearl, Royal Blue with Electric Blue Pearl, and Midnight Black with Holographic 3D Glitter ($38 at Sephora.com).

Available exclusively at Sephora, the palette contains six gorgeous hues that make pretty metallic eyes doable for all. I applied the Opalescent Gold at the inner corner of my eye and lid and then blended Silver with White Pearl over the outer corner, crease and lid. The pièce de résistance is Lorac’s 3D Liquid Lustre layered on top ($16 at Sephora). The set serves up blendable, highly pigmented sparkle that can be applied expertly by anyone.

Opalescent Gold and Silver with White Pearl + Lorac’s 3D Liquid Lustre

The 3D Liquid Lustre is a must buy product. It is, hands down, one of the best cosmetic products I’ve ever tried. The paraben-free liquid shimmer is housed in a small glass bottle with a dropper that releases the highest impact shimmer I’ve found in each tiny drop.

P.S. Head to Lorac.com right now and you’ll find a similar collection called “Pink Python” eye and cheek palette on clearance for $10.99; normally $35.  Just make sure you splurge and add on the $16 liquid lustre. It’s amazing!

Mani Monday: Addicted to Crackle

Monday, February 14th, 2011

The OPI Katy Perry Collection

I stand corrected.

Saturday, I headed to my favorite spa and got a manicure with The One That Got Away,  a shimmering raspberry from the OPI Katy Perry collection. I have to say, the color on its own is gorgeous.

OPI's The One That Got Away

On Sunday I decided that, in the name of investigative journalism, I was obligated to apply Black Shatter, an ebony crackle, over my The One That Got Away manicure, just as OPI intended.

I was expecting not to like it, and I didn’t. I loved it.

OPI's The One That Got Away + Black Shatter

The crackle top coat slicks on easily; it must be applied once the bottom color is completely dry and a thin coast yields the best results. Once dried, it’s akin to an edgy “design” if you will, that looks smashing with the sparkling raspberry peeking out from underneath.

I immediately began dreaming up color combinations which, of course, led me to wonder if Black Shatter would work with other brands of polish beneath. Why, yes it does.

This morning I tried a Sinful Colors lime green with Crackle and yes, it works just as well. Although, I have to admit, I prefer the effect of Black Shatter paired with The One That Got Away.

What do you think? Would you sport this look?

Pretty Parties: Valentine’s Day à deux

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

Forget the expensive (and high-calorie) restaurant meal, weekday Valentine’s are ideal for snuggling up at home at a candle lit (or fire-front) table for two.

Skip the PDA, private displays of affection are much more glamorous. (Not to mention, far less tacky.) Just be sure to dress up as if you were headed to the priciest resto in town.

Here’s what you need:

Champagne, Cranberry Juice and Fresh Strawberries. Mix the two drinks to taste and add a strawberry (greens removed, cut in half length ways) to garnish.

Filet of Beef and Organic Salad Greens for Steak Salad.  There’s an amazing recipe I swear by here. And yes, this is the main dish; being stuffed is not sexy.

Large Conversation Hearts and a Food Pen for naughty, edible love notes.

Pretzel Rods, White Chocolate Chip and Sprinkles to impress him with your “baking” skills. Simply melt the chips in the microwave, 60 seconds should do it, dip the rods in the chocolate and place on parchment paper to dry. Shake on a few sprinkles immediately and in about 15 minutes, your pretzels will be dry and ready to impress.

Two Breakfast in Bed serving trays and two comfy pillows to sit on. (I had this custom table made for side by side snuggling.)

If you have a fireplace, serve heart shaped marshmallows for roasting.

Happy Valentine’s Day, pretties!

Does lipstick captivate him?

Kiss your Gloss Goodbye

I’ve been touting lipstick as the new beauty trend you have to try, and now it seems, lipstick may also be the key to his heart. Men are most drawn to a woman’s lips over any other facial features, the Daily Mail reported in a story about research by U.K.’s Manchester University. The study goes on to claim that pink lipstick will hold his attention for 6.7 seconds while red will keep his eyes on you for 7.3 seconds.

I’ve come up with my own, completely un-scientific, list of the top 5 lipsticks to help get, or keep, your guy:

#1 Alarm, a fire-engine red, from Maybelline.
#2 Ho Ho Ho, a crisp crimson, from Michael Marcus.
#3 Wild Fire, a bright orangey-red, from Estee Lauder.
#4 Porn Star, a shocking pink, from Mattese.
#5 Sekichiku, a shimmering pink, by Sensai.

 Creative Cuisine

You don’t have to blow the bank to impress your lov-ah this V-day. Head to your local craft store and pick up candy conversation hearts and Wilton’s FoodWriter pens to craft your own edible love notes.

You can create custom messages on the back-side of the conversation hearts, and, you can even remove the pre-printed message in the front with a razor blade to create a one-of-a-kind conversation from the heart.

Delizioso Skincare

No-Calorie Treats

What would Valentine’s Day be without bath and body products that leave you as sweetly scented as a fresh baked cupcake?

Delizioso Skincare, a boutique brand of organic products, has one of the most deliciously scented Body Washes I’ve ever encountered in their White Chocolate & Berries Wash, Soap and Cream ($32 for the set at deliziososkincare.com). Other favorites include Sandalwood Body Butter from Mount Romance ($21.95 at mtromanceusa.com), ideal for giving him a massage. And, for you, Temptations Bath n’ Body  hand-crafted Cherry Vanilla collection, available on craft site, esty.com.

You were already perfect, but now you’re even love-lier.

Guest Post: How to be Smarter, Prettier and (less) Awkward…

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

It’s extremely rare that I find a blog that sucks me in. I’m completely immune to Perez Hilton.  I can walk right by even the most fetching US Weekly cover. So, when I happened across Smart Pretty and Awkward and then spent hours  — literally — lost in its posts, I knew I had to share.

Molly Ford is the smart, savvy, talented and pretty founder of Smart Pretty and Awkward, a blog that she began in 2008. Her frequent posts include well written and surprisingly sage advice (she’s only 24) on how to live a life that is smarter, prettier and less awkward.

I am excited to share her guest post today—the only guest post I’ve ever published here – as I know you too will become addicted to SPA. xo, CB

How to be Smarter, Prettier and (less) Awkward…

When Getting a Massage…
How to be Smarter:  If you are worried you might feel uncomfortable with a masseuse of the opposite sex, ask for someone of the same gender. It’s also okay to ask the receptionist when you make the appointment what to wear or not to wear; this is especially true when on vacation or in a different part of the world, where massages might vary a little from what you are used to.

How to be Prettier: Do not get hair done beforehand; the massage might include scalp work, and/or lying down might flatten your hair. If you would like to get your hair done the same day, do the massage first.

How to be (less) Awkward: Just like you brush your teeth before the dentist, make sure you smell okay before a massage.

When Getting a Manicure or Pedicure…

How to be Smarter: During a manicure, once the nail technician starts applying polish, you won’t be able to use your hands. So before she starts applying polish, turn to a really big article in the magazine you are reading so you have something to read the whole time without needing to flip the page with wet nails.

How to be Prettier: Pedicures requires you to plan ahead and have appropriate footwear with you. Don’t wear tights to a pedicure, but rather pants or shorts that can be rolled up. Also, bring an old pair of flip flops to wear home if the weather is warm enough, otherwise, ask to have your toes wrapped in cellophane (most salons should have this) before you put them into your shoes to prevent chipping or smearing while they are still slightly wet.

How to be (less) Awkward: Some people get their nails done once a week, some once a month, and some once a lifetime. Remember that even if this is just another part of your weekly beauty routine, for some people sitting around you at the salon, this a big indulgence. Let them enjoy their splurge without you yakking on a cell phone next to them, and let yourself enjoy the process without the outside world butting in via texts/emails/calls (and avoid the worry of handling the phone with wet nails).

When Getting a Facial…
How to be Smarter: There is really no reason to pay full price for any salon trip. So many online programs give you great deals, tailored by city or service. But while most people do a lot of research to figure out the best price, once you have narrowed down your options, the next step is more research. Call ahead and speak to one of their skin specialists, asking about different options and what they recommend for your skin type. At good salons or spas, this should all be done for free. The more questions you ask ahead of time, the better results you will get.

How to be Prettier: Double up procedures; ask if you can get your eyebrows or lips waxed either before or after the facial (this is dependent on your skin type and type of facial getting done. In some instances, too many procedures could irritate your skin). Some places also gives a discount if you get two services at once, so ask.

How to be (less) Awkward: Never get a facial done the day of a big event. Your face will probably be red after, and the full effect of a facial takes anywhere from a few hours to a few days to set in.

Mani Monday: Waking Up In Vegas

Monday, February 7th, 2011

Deborah Lippmann's Waking Up In Vegas

In the mood for a gamble, I took Deborah Lippmann’s “putty-licious gray” lacquer, Waking Up In Vegas, for a spin today.

The color, a crème gray, was a bit out of my comfort zone; turns out, Deborah Lippmann’s haute hues are always a sure thing.

And while the collection is not cheap – Waking Up In Vegas will cost you $16 — Lippmann’s luxury hand and foot care collection is worth every penny and worthy of the hype it’s gained from boasting a celeb fan club including Zac Posen, Cher and many more.

I’m so enamored with this lacquer, I may just vow undying loyalty. And no, there’s no annulment in my future.
