The 3 Best Lip Glosses

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

While I’m an avid lipstick fan, there’s a time and a place for gloss. What’s never appropriate, however, is gloss that slips and slides across your lips leaving messy color and sticky product in its wake.  Same goes for gloss that comes in pots designed to be applied with your fingers; any gloss toting woman can tell you that sticky fingers are oh-so-undesirable.  Brushes can work, as long as they are retractable, otherwise expect to pull your gloss brush out of your bag covered in goo.

The best glosses, hands down, are those with a built in applicator wand that applies just the right amount of stay-put shine to lips and boasts color that lasts without bleeding. I tested 68 glosses to share with you a definitive list of the top 3 glosses on the market now.

Lipfusion Infatuation

LipFusion Infatuation
What to think of a lip gloss that promises to “boost natural lip fat without surgery?” I think you’ll love it. This ultra-shiny gloss comes in a variety of hues with two things in common: impressive shine and lip plumping properties. Gorgeous hues to frost your pucker with now include Screen Siren, a vibrant cherry red; Lollipop, a  true hot pink; La Lip Jolie; a nude baby pink; and Full Frontal, a sheer coral. Get a hue to suit you for $29 at Sephora. Beauty tip: Stop lipstick feathering and bleeding with another fave Fusion Beauty product: LipfusionXL, a contouring and plumping pencil that’s applied before color and worth its weight in gold.

Girlactik Glosses

GirlActik
I couldn’t leave Girlactik Beauty’s Star Gloss out of any best gloss story even though the top of mine is broken and I’ve been aggressively swiping the sides of the tube to try to eke out the last bit of gloss. There’s no design flaw to speak of here, rather a year of addictive star gloss use has rendered my once perfect gloss into a shiny shadow of its former self.  Yet it’s so good, I continue to attempt to garner some of the sparkly goodness inside from the now beat up tube. Sounds like it’s time for me to head to girlactik.com and drop $16 on a new Innocent Pink, So Lush or Orange Twist.

Estee Lauder's Orange Crush

Estee Lauder
There was a time that I thought of Estee Lauder as a brand of makeup my Mom loved.  Look who’s smitten now. Over the last year the experts at Estee have been turning out of-the-moment colors in some of the best lipsticks I’ve come across. In fact, I swore by their lipsticks, until I met their Pure Color gloss collection.  I’m hot for hues like Fuchsia Fever and Cherry Fever and infatuated with their limited edition Orange Crush collection and Pure Color Lip Gelee in bright, sheer shades. All sell for about $20 in department stores and online at esteelauder.com. This ain’t your mama’s lip gloss, ladies.

The Top 5 Beauty Trends for Spring

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

Spring is officially here and this year’s trends are eclectic and colorful. Here are the top five looks to master as your transition into a blooming beauty.

Paris Fashion Week Spring 2011 - Chapurin

Lip Service

Candy colored puckers continue to pop this spring with hues such as melon, coral and even straight-up orange getting more than lip service on the spring runways of designers including Marc Jacobs, Nanette Lepore and Milly. The easiest way to appear on–trend this spring is to slick on a vivid shade of carrot-colored gloss or matte lipstick. Then go boldly, and brightly, into spring.

Done and Done

Loose waves may be touted by some as a spring trend (staple is more like it, if you ask me) but the done ‘do seen on spring 2011 runways is much more interesting.  And the key to making this look modern is a simple side part. Part hair on the side and then opt for a low bun slicked back with a touch of pomade for an easy, breezy seasonal hair update.

Anna Sui’s Spring 2011 Shining Star Collection

Pretty as a Princess

Spring seems to beckon the romantics on the beauty scene and this year is no different. Light, shimmery lips pair with eyes in smooth shades of pink and purple to create a soft palette worthy of a princess. For inspiration, turn to Jasun Wu’s sultry spring runway look. For application turn to Anna Sui’s Spring 2011 Shining Star Collection, which plays up sultry, smoky eyes in shades ranging from lilac to aubergine.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week - Carlos Miele

And the Braid goes on…

Too many Lauren Conrad sightings had me declaring the death of the braid a few years back but it seems that designers and consumers have spoken, and the braid goes on. A bevy of braids were spotted on the spring 2011 runways including Lacoste, Carlos Miele and Behnaz Sarafpour. Best of all, the wearable braid pairs well with nearly any ‘do. Wrap a low brad into a loose chignon, snake a skinny braid down a side part paired with loose waves, or embrace the au naturel headband trend by encircling the crown of your head with a thin braid.

Peter Som Spring 2011

Techni-color Dreams

Yellow eyeliner at Peter Som. Bold couture combos at Christian Dior, Nina Ricci and Issa. Vivid manicures including shades of turquiose (Sephora by OPI Nail Colour GLEE Collection), yellow (China Glaze Solar Power) and grape (CND Eclectic Purple). The rules? Throw out the rule book. Opt for vivid hues, then mix and mix (don’t match) with abandon.

Best Skin Care Products and Freebie Friday

Friday, March 18th, 2011

After reviewing over 10,000 beauty and skin care products, you get a little picky.

On Wednesday, I shared some of my “must have” beauty products, items so fabulous, there is always a spot for them in my makeup bag.

To round off the week, today I’m sharing skin care products that actually deliver. While skin care products come (and go), these babies have earned a coveted spot on my vanity.

Night Rainew

The 100 percent organic Night Rainew came packaged with a steep price tag ($129 for 1.7 ounces), and at the time, I liked the product. Over time, fondness has grown to adoration.

I’ve turned to the  rich cream in this blue, rain-drop shaped jar many, many times.  That’s because April Rain’s Night Rainew serves up intense hydration that I keep on hand for those days when my normally oily skin becomes parched, such as post-microderm or after seasons change.

According to April Rain Skin Science, it’s a proprietary blend of ingredients in Night Rainew, including HydroPeptide, plus Buddleja and Echinacea extracts, that quench the skin. The paraben and phthalate-free product is dermatologist tested and appropriate for all skin types. Despite its steep price tag, this is one skin-saving product that may just be a bargain. April Rain Skin Science is sold online at aprilrainskinscience.com.

ExfoliKate

What celebrity-loved product sloughs off dead skin, revealing a glowing complexion, and does it in 30 seconds flat? ExfoliKate Gentle Exfoliating Treatment from Kate Somerville.

Ideal for those with sensitive skin, Kate Somerville’s exfoliating treatment polishes skin until it glows. Papaya, pumpkin, and pineapple enzymes promise to reduce the appearance of pore size and stimulate circulation, giving skin that I-just-went-for-a-three-mile-jog glow.  The Kate Somerville collection is reportedly adored by A-listers such as Olivia Wilde, Kristen Bell, Felicity Huffman, Kate Walsh and Kim Kardashian. But finding out what all the celebrity fuss is about will cost you; ExfoliKate Gentle sells for $65 for 2oz. at www.katesomerville.com.

Vi Derm Clear HQ Free Skin Brightener

I was introduced to Vi Derm Clear HQ Free Skin Brightener ($60) and Advanced Firming Lotion at one of my favorite medical spas and it’s a “clear” winner.

Thanks to retinol, Kojic Acid, Azelaic Acid, Arbutin and Licorice extract, skin is exfoliated and refined while hyperpigmentation is diminished. It doesn’t smell bad at all, like so many other products that call upon an ingredient called hydroquinone for lightening do. (Vi Derm is free of hydroquinone, hence the name, “HQ Free.”)

I also like the Firming Lotion, designed to reduce fine lines and superficial wrinkles, because it feels fabulous going on and my skin appears to look better every morning after a nightly application.

Lemon Cream Scrub

A newbie on my list of skin care loves is Sanítas Skincare’s Lemon Cream Scrub.  The scent is simply amazing, but it’s the gentle effectiveness of the mild cleanser that makes this product a skin care staple.

Lemon Cream Scrub is a mild cleanser that softens and gently exfoliates using Silica Crystals. Lipophilic Vitamin C and Vitamin E act as antioxidants to help protect, heal and provide anti-aging benefits. Other key ingredients include Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin C  to protect, heal and stimulate collagen production. Plus, round Silica crystals exfoliate without scratching skin.

P.S. Since today is everyone’s favorite day of the week, Freebie Friday, I’m giving away some products from my “must have” beauty products – LipFusion Infatuation.

To win, you can leave a comment below, send me a tweet @prettycity or even post a comment on our facebook page and you may get glossy, free of charge.

Winners will be notified via message next Thursday by no later than 5pm CST.

The best beauty products in my bag

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

The ultimate endorsement is whether or not a product lands a spot in my makeup bag. Because even when I really like something, that doesn’t mean I’ll keep it. Many of my favorite products have ended up in the handbags of my mom, sisters, or girlfriends. After all, how many mascaras can a girl use at one time?

But this week’s products are items that are so fabulous; they’ve all earned a spot on my vanity.

Eye on Beauty

Dark under eye circles are as unattractive as they are inevitable for many new moms, thanks to sleeping schedules thrown into chaos. Still other women are simply genetically prone to getting dark circles under the eyes. Having two of my own babies, I sympathize with anyone who’s battling under eye circles; even better, I’ve got a go-to product that helps cure and conceal.

Being True’s Protective Illuminating Concealer ($30) cover ups existing under eye circles while brightening the skin under the eyes. Each concealer compact includes a trio of products; two shades of concealer that can be mixed to customize a perfect match, and an illuminating neutralizer that corrects color and deflects attention from fine lines.

Here’s why I love this product: it’s light and moist, never going on heavy (which just calls attention to under eye problems and highlights wrinkles). Plus, it’s long lasting and a built-in brightener actually lightens under eye darkness while it covers.

Lip service

Pretty lips are the crowning glory of any look, and for me that means an effective lip liner that locks color in place and refuses to feather. I’ve gushed about a drugstore brand called Milani in the past and now I’m a huge fan of a product from Eyes Lips Face that’s even cheaper than my $4 drugstore fave.

e.l.f. Studio’s Lip Liner & Blending Brush is just $3 and comes in a shade called “natural” that seems to go with just about everything. The smooth pencil never needs to be sharpened and swipes on smoothly, applying even color that lasts. Get it at eyeslipsface.com.

What’s a great liner without a great gloss? I’m a big fan of LipFusion Infatuation ($29), a gloss “lip fattener” with a punch of color in a variety of colors. Some of my favorites are Angelic, a rose shimmer; Lollipop, a new hue of hot pink; and Screen Siren, a cherry red. Shop the collection at local Sephora stores or online at fusionbeauty.com.

Good, Great Hair Days

Moroccanoil is a mainstay in my hair care routine. And that’s surprising, because I have naturally oily hair. But shine and conditioning without residue are what Moroccanoil’s products promise and, despite the name, they deliver on that promise without making hair oily.

Argan Oil, a key component of the collection, also serves as a UV protectant and antioxidant that quenches and corrects locks. For about $40, I get the 3.4 oz. Original Moroccan0il Treatment at my favorite salon. There’s also a Moroccanoil Light Treatment now available for blonde and fine hair.

Moroccanoil

Tune in tomorrow for more of my go-to products. What’s in your bag? What products do you want to try?

In Beauty, Make your own Luck

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

Luck is defined as “good fortune as the result of chance.” But when it comes to beauty, new products and procedures may just have the power to change your future, or at least, what you look like as you face your destiny.

Luck of the Draw

When I was growing up, I’d often wish that fate had blessed me with blue eyes and straight hair. Nowadays, there’s no need to wish for good fortune, thanks to buzz-worthy Keratin hair treatments designed to change hair texture, including taming frizz and straightening even the kinkiest of locks.

Straightening Treatments, including Brazilian Keratin, The Brazilian Blowout, Keratin Complex by Coppola and others, promise to transform dull, frizzy, unruly hair into sleek and straight tresses. I’ve personally tried the Brazilian Keratin brand treatment and can attest to its effectiveness.

But changing your hair’s destiny doesn’t come without consequence; negative buzz has been generated claiming that certain brands of Keratin treatments contain unhealthy levels of Formaldehyde. That’s a claim the FDA is investigating, so before you opt to alter the hair you inherited with a Keratin treatment, be sure to do research into the brands you’re considering.

Lady Luck

The quest for flat abs, taut thighs and a firm bum seems to be a female obsession. And while I tell my girlfriends to appreciate their assets and ignore their flaws, a company called Vaser has set out to level the playing field with their non-invasive liposuction alternative.

Vaser Lipo targets specific areas of the body using ultrasonic energy to separate fat cells for removal in areas including the legs, stomach, waist, back and even the neck. This body-sculpting liposuction alternative can not only blast your belly fat, but leave you with a six-pack to boot. One of my PrettyCity colleagues tried the treatment and it actually worked, transforming her tummy from paunchy to washboard with one treatment. I know because she showed me — and all of the other girls in the office — her stomach post-procedure. Repeatedly.

I comfort myself by thinking that maybe some of the celebs that are pictured frolicking on the beach in skimpy bikinis after giving birth to a couple of kids didn’t just hit the genetic jackpot. Perhaps they were just fortunate enough to find a good doctor?

Feelin’ Lucky

Forget the rabbit’s foot, and opt for Aloe Vera, a plant that Mexicans have long called upon to bring good fortune.

Fortunately for your skin, doctors Ahmed and Kay Abdullah have created a skin care line, TréSkinRX, that targets acne as well as a myriad of other skin care woes with organic, pharmaceutical grade Aloe Vera.

Aloe Vera is a proven anti-inflammatory that is therapeutic for complexion problems aggravated by inflammation including acne, rosacea, psoriasis and others. Plus, the TréSkinRX regimen calls upon four essential skin-saving steps: cleanse, exfoliate, moisturize and protect. These four steps are essential the success of any skin care program; skip them and you’re most certainly pushing your luck.

Freebie Friday: Makeup that’s Made for You

Which shade of Maybelline's new collection fits you?

Three things that are not glamorous: Overdrawn lips. Obviously penciled in brows. Foundation lines. When it comes to applying makeup, picking the right products for you and applying them correctly is key.

Maybelline has launched a new collection called FITme! that’s designed to fit your coloring like a glove.

I’m just in the early stages of testing out the collection so I can’t love it or leave it just yet. But since the lovely ladies at Maybelline gifted me with far too many shades — so that I could find my “fit” — I thought I should share all of the extras with you.

Find your shade at Maybelline.com and then tell me, by commenting below, what your shade is, and you may just win some made-to-fit new makeup from Maybelline.

The Best and Worst Drugstore Mascaras

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

A few weeks ago, I headed to a local drugstore and nearly emptied the shelves in search of drugstore mascara, with a price tag of under ten bucks, that could compete with my high-end favorites.  I found three mascaras, all for less than eight dollars, to add to my love list and a few mascaras that you couldn’t pay me to try again. Here are the eye-opening results of my drugstore mascara expedition…

Maybelline’s XXL Pro Volume Mascara

Love it: Maybelline’s XXL Pro Volume Mascara

I raved previously about a pricey – but worth it – mascara and primer duo from Kanebo and now I’ve discovered the bargain bin alternative for drugstore divas. Maybelline’s XXL Pro Volume Mascara, available in washable and waterproof formulas, promises to amp up volume thanks to a dual sided applicator that builds lashes with a primer like product and then adds color with the mascara itself. The microfiber base coat delivers on its promise to increase volume while the topcoat serves up intense color that is oh-so-buildable. Best of all, this affordable mascara actually lasts; grab a tube for $7.24 at Target stores.

Leave it: L’Oreal Double Extend Eye Illuminator.

Another dual-sided product —  that isn’t half as good — is L’Oreal’s Double Extend Eye Illuminator.  Available in a variety of shades meant to complement different eye colors, this mascara fails on two counts: the mascara itself is not impressive and guilty of flaking. The top coat, an illuminator that promises to highlight eyes with “light-reflecting pearls,” is barely noticeable. Spare yourself the hefty price tag — by drugstore standards — of about $11, and leave this one at your local drugstore.

Neutrogena Healthy Volume Mascara

Love it: Neutrogena Healthy Volume Mascara

I love this volumizing, lengthening mascara from Neutrogena equally for its impressive ability to build up lashes as for its commitment to staying on my lashes without smudging, flaking or transferring. The big brush applicator was initially a bit awkward to master, but the mascara’s formula really compensates for the application learning curve by serving up dense, lush lashes in a mascara that refuses to clump, coat after coat. Get it for $7.47 at Walmart.

Leave it: Almay Intense i-Color Mascara

The claim of “light interplay technology” intrigued me even though, I’ve no idea what that actually means. It sounded high-tech and futuristic, and at less than eight dollars for the mascara, I was willing to take a gamble. The verdict: while I didn’t actually solve the mystery of what this technology would do for my eyes, I did find the formula to be prone to clumping and the mascara brush itself to be cheap and bulky. Knowing when to fold ‘em, I gave up on this mascara after a few wears.

CoverGirl LashBlast Fusion Mascara

Love it: CoverGirl LashBlast Fusion Mascara

When a girlfriend compared CoverGirl LashBlash Fusion Mascara to a favorite designer mascara brand, I had to give it a try. Determined to prove that this drugstore brand could not compete with the higher-priced competitor, I coated one eye with LashBlast and the other with aforementioned designer fave.  And while I hate to be wrong, LashBlast earned its rightful place on my “love it” list thanks to super-volumizing, lash-lengthening, long-lasting formula. Kudos to CoverGirl; get it for $7.99 at Target.

When it comes to mascara, what’s your drugstore fave?
