The do and don’ts of saving money on great hair at the drugstore

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

Last week, I divulged my favorite ways to splurge on grooming, so this week I’m sharing ways to save money — and still have gorgeous hair — at your local drugstore.

#1 Do save on a sulfate-free shampoo: You can pay up to $30 for a bottle of department store shampoo but don’t be surprised if it’s full of sulfates. Yup, sulfates, chemicals that have been linked to hair loss and sensitivity reactions. So, instead of paying top dollar for a shampoo that’s price may be based on the designer name or marketing dollars spent, opt for an affordable alternative at the drugstore. I like Organix, sold for about six dollars at local drugstores, the collection is housed in eco-friendly bottles and sulfate-free.

#2 Don’t overhaul your look: Coloring your hair from the drugstore aisles can be a cost-saver or a complete disaster. My advice is feel free to go a shade or two lighter or darker, but don’t attempt anything more dramatic without a professional’s help. And if you do decide to tweak your own color, don’t go by the picture on the box. Since color reacts differently to hair texture, health and texture – the reason you really need a professional! — the best indicator of the colors you’ll end up with is the color description, such as “light blonde” or “golden brown.”

# 3 Do Deep Condition:  Unlike hair styling products, your conditioner just gets washed down the drain after a few minutes which is why it may be worth saving your hard earned cash and opting for a drugstore deep conditioner.  And for about eight bucks, you can pick up Burt’s Bees Shea and Grapefruit Deep Conditioner. In just two minutes, Shea butter plus essentials oils including Grapefruit, Orange, Lemon, Lime and Tangerine leave hair soft, shiny and PH balanced. Plus, this product if free of sulfates, parabens and other harmful chemicals.

# 4 Don’t retexturize:
There are certain things I encourage you to save money on. Others, like completely changing the texture of your hair should only be done by a professional. I’ve gotten emails from readers who have broken hair, destroyed hair, discolored hair and more all because they tried to go straight or get curly on a dime. Don’t do it!

#5 Save on Blow driers:  If you use a flat iron, invest in a quality brand but when it comes to blow driers, I found that drugstores serve up some of the most affordable – and effective options. My hand’s down favorite after testing more than a dozen drugstore brands in the Revlon RV544 Tourmaline Ionic hair dryer, which sells for less than 20 dollars at Wal-Mart. This product dries hair faster and causes less damage than other dryers.

Top 3 Beauty Splurges

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

Since this week’s PrettyCity email edition is all about saving, I thought it only fitting that I blog about splurging today.  A subject I have to admit, I much prefer.

Having tried a million beauty products  — O.K., more like 15,000 – I have definite opinions about which products and services are really worth the money.  I have affordable products I turn to even if there’s a pricey counterpart sitting on my vanity waiting to be used.  But I also swear by certain products and services that may seem expensive at first glance, but are actually a smart beauty investment.

Here are some of my favorite beauty splurges. And, might I add, they’re worth every cent.

Eyelash Extensions: They’re not cheap, that’s true, but long lashes take years off your face, save you enormous time in the morning and help ensure that you look great straight out of the pool. That’s priceless.

After traveling around the country for events and other engagements, I have a list of extension experts I trust in many cities. In Chicago, it’s Salon Lashe, Hair Base and others. In NYC, it’s Skintology and Chris Chase.  In L.A. it’s Billy Lowe, et al.

Brazilian Keratin: I know, this is a controversial one. I have to admit, I’ve had Brazilian Keratin and while I don’t get it regularly, I can say that I found it to be am amazingly worthwhile splurge one hot, humid summer. My hair was sleek and frizz-free for months and for women who really aren’t happy with their hair type, I swear this hair care “splurge” lives up to the hype.

Skin Care: I swear by really great skin care products. I have girlfriends who find stuff they love in the drugstore but I find that higher price skin care packs more of a punch. I’m currently infatuated with Suki’s Clay Cleanser, Astara’s Sea Mineral Soak and Biotherm’s Multi Recharge.

At my house, splurging and saving live in harmony. I’ll throw on a Target dress with six inch Louboutins. I love gourmet cheese and organic Japanese pears… paired with a cheap glass of White Zin.

What’s your favorite beauty splurge and what do you save on?

Glam Guest Post: Mama’s Mobile Spa

I like to drive. That’s because it’s almost impossible to complete a beauty regimen at home, with four teensy kids in the house. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve “accidentally” locked the bathroom door behind me.

Just a few minutes ago, we all were watching Gulliver’s Travels. My toenail polish was almost, almost dry when the movie ended, and everybody rose, and my daughter stepped on my toes. Readers, learn from my experience: Silver sparkles do not complement beige Berber.

That’s why my spa is my car. In its center console, I carry facial cleansing wipes, moisturizer for the face and body, eye cream, mints, lip balm, nail polishes, a hairbrush, cuticle clippers, nail file, travel toothbrushes, lipsticks, perfumes, mascara, and a sparkly finishing powder (my complexion is so Gwyneth-white, bronzers make me look like I’m wearing cinnamon toast on my face).

Here’s how your spa operates: At a stoplight, pick your pampering.

Waiting for a train? Woo hoo, you’ve got me time! If you didn’t have a chance to apply makeup before leaving the house, do that first. I figure that, if I have mascara, powder, and lipstick on, I at least look prepared. After that, you can brush and moisturize as you need.

If space is limited in your car, grab samples — get on Sephora’s mailing list, and you’ll get tons of freebies. Alpha moms I admire, like Hannah Keeley, already advocate bringing a basket with car cleaning supplies and stowing it in the passenger seat. So why not stash bottled water in the basket as well… and vitamins and fish oil, to strengthen hair and nails?

You get bonus points for buying healthy snacks at the grocery store and automatically adding them to your stash when you reach the car. You gorgeous woman, you, you’re also frugal and timewise. When you’re doing errands and get hungry, you won’t blow 10 minutes in a drive through and $7 on manufactured meat when you’re in possession of a 14-cent banana.

This mobile regimen works because it’s highly soothing and it’s curiously strengthening, pampering yourself through the day. You’ll be amazed at how much grooming you actually get done.  Because by 8 p.m. I’m usually so exhausted, I’m lucky just to read InStyle Mag, let alone do everything it advocates.

A caveat: Make sure your moisturizer isn’t too greasy, or your hands will slide off the wheel (yikes, Ahava!). Yes, you want your beauty to stop traffic, but not because your skidding car caused a seventeen-car pileup. Apply nail polish to fingers and toes before you leave home, and by the time you’ve reached Costco, everybody will want a sample of you.

Also, beware: Beautify only at stoplights. Distracted drivers are drivers in danger. Don’t worry what other drivers think while they’re looking at you. They’re either fighting their nearly uncontrollable lust for you or picking their noses… hopefully not both.

Besides, the woman in the car beside you might be me. I’ll be pampering myself, too.

Mani Monday: Rapido!

Monday, May 9th, 2011

Borghese has a new quick-drying nail lacquer collection and, what do you know, it really does dry in a flash.  The collection promises not only to dry fast but also to strengthen nails thanks to a proprietary Aqua di Vita complex that adds strength and brilliance.

I loved the tick bush that makes impromptu DIY polish changes oh-so-easy and the rich hues that are 3 free (free of DBP’s, Toluene and added Formaldehyde).

Get ‘em for $8 each at Ulta locations and online.

The Glamour of a Signature Scent

Friday, May 6th, 2011

Boucheron EDP

Long ago, during a stint in perfume sales, I became a certified perfume expert. (Or is that certifiable?)

And while I’m not sure that I still hold the title of “expert” (surely there are some licensing renewals I’ve since missed), I am an expert in what I like. And when it comes to fragrance, knowing your one signature scent, the one that defines you and reminds others of you, is all the expertise one really needs.

My “signature scent” is Boucheron, an oriental, floral fragrance that calls upon a feminine blend of tangerine, orange, jasmine sandalwood, amber and vanilla. Here’s how you can find your own signature…

Step one: Define your preferences. Fragrances fall into four main categories: Floral, Oriental, Fresh and Woody. Head to your local fragrance counter and discover which type of scent speaks to you.

Step two: Don’t be fooled by the top note! The way that a scent first smells on your skin is called the top note, and it fades fast. Wait about 15 to 30 minutes to evaluate the true personality of the scent on your skin.

Step three: If coupled, make sure he likes it. You find this out not by asking but by waiting for an earnest, unsolicited reaction.  It’s not that everything you do is meant to benefit your significant other, but certainly, you want your scent to appeal to, not repel, the person you love.

I love the idea of wearing one signature scent; it’s a calling card that reminds others of you long after you’ve left the room.

This Freebie Friday, I’m giving away a 3 oz. bottle of my fave fragrance, Boucheron EDP (get it for $136 at Nordstrom).

To win, tell me if you are a fragrance loyalist (like me!) or if you prefer to play the field? As always, tweet @prettycity, comment below or comment on Facebook.com/prettycity.

Happy Freebie Friday, my pretties.
