Ain’t love glam?

Customizable Prada Sunglasses

I got married when I was 25 which, in retrospect, seems quite young.  I’ll be 38 this August, which makes my young marriage nearly 13 years old. Lucky 13.

My secrets to a happy marriage? Put your husband first (before work, girlfriends, even siblings).  Work on your marriage like you do on your career or your abs —  think dedication, creativity and flexibility.

And always do little things to show your mate how much you adore him.

That’s why I headed to prada.com and ordered a pair of customizable shades from the Prada private collection ($325).  Mine are black and adorned with  “I <3 BB.”  I like to think of it as a love letter of the most stylish sort.

Color Club

Nude may be timeless, but learning how to rock color from locks to lips is a must have skill for any woman who doesn’t mind getting noticed.

Electric Lids

If you’re hooked on nude lips, pair them with bold eye shadow for a change.  Always start with a lid primer which serves as a smooth, even base for your color of choice; be sure to apply the base from lash line to brow line.

Next, apply a warm or cool all-over shadow that is very close to your own skin tone; I like Terra Peach from LemonChi Cosmetics ($8). Finally, pick your color pop of choice — think purple, orange, green or the like and apply the color just to the lid below the crease and the inner corner of eye.  Use your all over shadow to blend as needed. Layer on mascara to complement your newly bold lids and light up the town.

Kiss Color

Summer is the ideal time to pair bold lips with glowing skin. And while red is my go-to lip color of choice, I love the crisp, bright pinks and chic shades of melon that are de rigueur this season.  And I’m bound and determined to drag you, kicking and screaming if need be, into fashion by showing you just how wearable these colors can be.

Novices should pick a nude lip liner to line lips before filling in with a bold and beautiful new lip hue. Skip the gloss; that can be messy, and opt instead for a flattering hue without any glitter or shine.  No idea where to start or what hue will suit you? Pick up a palette of lip colors, then mix and match until you find the shades that suit you best.

Lively Locks

Liven up locks with a pop of color thanks to temporary hair extensions called Featherlocks, feather hair extensions that have been spotted on a number of red carpets of late. Featherlocks come in a variety of colors and are safely applied by licensed stylists.  Many salons sell Featherlocks in quantities of three for $25.  (Need a salon recommendation? Send me a tweet @prettycity and I’ll recommend a spot near you. If you’re in Chicagoland, check out top spots here.)

Wear it Well

Now that you’ve dipped your foot into a more colorful life, it’s time to wear the walk.  Some experts will tell you to add a pop of color via accessories; I expect more from you. I love nothing more than a little yellow cocktail dress or a fuchsia pencil skirt when the weather heats up.

You can do it, just follow my rules for wearing color well: don’t wear more than 2 to 3 items in the same color family. Don’t match your purse and shoes to your outfit; opt for nude or metallic accessories to complement vivid hues. And whatever you do, please don’t match your eye shadow to your outfit. That’s tacky, not trendy.

Mani Monday: Chic and Cheeky, Again.

Monday, June 20th, 2011

I’m addicted to pink and red lacquer of late, so it takes a truly unique hue to wrestle me out of my current color rut. Enter Cheeky Monkey Cosmetics, a polish collection that is non-toxic and 3 Free. (You may remember, I initially wrote about the collection here.)

Pearl Necklace and Dancing Queen

Today, I opted for two coats of Pearl Necklace paired with a layer of Dancing Queen.  The sparkling white complements my new tan – spray on, of course —  perfectly.

A new manicure makes everything more glamorous.

Spring Beauty

Like any true beauty lover, I can hardly walk into Walgreens, Target or CVS without leaving with some new beauty product or hair care gadget. And it’s not that I need something new, nor is it that I don’t have enough high-end products, it’s just that, frankly, I love sparkle and shine.

I must confess, I also love how Essie’s Big Spender polish and Maybelline’s Volum’Express Mascara complemented the colors in this chic little makeup bag. So, I picked one up for you.

To win, send me a tweet @prettycity, leave a comment below or post a comment on our prettycity facebook wall.

Have a beautiful spring weekend, my pretties.

Glamour is in Bloom

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

Red roses & pink spray roses housed in a Moroccan-inspired candle holder in my dining room

Fresh flowers are decidedly glamorous.

Nothing makes the house feel as warm, inviting and luxurious to me as roses in the dining room, peonies in the foyer, even a single hydrangea in a bud vase on my vanity. And no dinner party, birthday bash or impromptu fête is complete without a floral “pop.”

So imagine my surprise when a girlfriend shared that she never knows what to do with fresh flowers and finds herself too often sticking them haphazardly in a random vase.   In case you too find yourself lacking when it comes to glamorously gathering in season blossoms, here’s how you can effortlessly bring your home into bloom.

Flowers in a Toothbrush Holder. From CasaSugar.com

  1. Start with bleach.  After cutting stems on a slant, add one half teaspoon of bleach to the water to kill bacteria and prolong the life of your flowers.
  2. Save Green. I’m an advocate of no greenery, foliage, etc. in my flower arrangements. Simply pick one flower you love in several colors to create a simply stunning arrangement.
  3. Contain Yourself. Picking the right vase is so important if you’re not an expert. Vases that are opaque are the easiest to use since you can focus exclusively on what the flowers look like at the top of the vase and not what is happening below.
  4. Don’t buy a vase; instead, opt for unusual containers for flowers such as candle holders, jars, pitchers, even toothbrush holders.
  5. Still can’t arrange flowers glamorously? Cheat by picking a vase that does the work for you such as a bud vase or grouping of individual flowers, using a container like this Wood Crate with 4 Glass Bottles ($6.99 at http://www.save-on-crafts.com/bottlecrate.html).

Expert Advice from The Makeup Show

Senna Cosmetics at The Makeup Show

What’s the biggest beauty mistake women make? What’s the single best beauty product? This week, I met up with beauty experts from the likes of Stila, Kevyn Aucoin, Hissy Fit and many more at The Makeup Show and asked them to spill their best kept beauty secrets.

The Makeup Show, which travels from Los Angeles to NYC to Chicago and throughout Europe, serves up tips and tricks from top beauty experts and is open exclusively to makeup professionals. Not to worry dolls, I snuck in to this exclusive show to grab beauty advice from some top professionals, and of course, share it with you.

First, I met up with Sheila Ondrachek, an Education Artist at Stila Cosmetics who told me that Stila’s Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner ($20 at Ulta) is her favorite product in part because it’s so easy to apply, even for makeup novices, and it’s difficult to make mistakes. Plus, true to its name, “I’ve slept in it and it still says on,” said Ondrachek.

When asked about the biggest mistake women make with cosmetics, Ondracheck put it succinctly, “stripes,” referring to the linear streaks of blush some women mistakenly apply to their cheekbones. She explained that blush should be focused on just the apples of the cheeks, giving the look of a pop of flattering color, hence the name “blush.”

From Stila I headed to Senna where I met Theda Weston, Director of Product Development. She swears by Senna’s HD Hydra Cover Concealer ($38 at sennacosmetics.com). Boasting High definition diffusing pigments and hyaluronic filling spheres to plump skin paired with collagen stimulating ingredients, this concealer truly does it all. The concealer diminishes flaws and wrinkles, brightens skin and boosts skin renewal. Her best beauty tip for women who want to look flawless and take years of their faces is, “have great brows.”

At Kevyn Aucoin, Danny Griffin, Vice President of Product Development, told me that Kevyn Aucoin’s The Sensual Skin Enhancer ($45 at Barneys New York) is the must have product in the Aucoin collection. It can be used as a concealer or as an overall foundation and, according to Griffin, it’s the product that Kevyn Aucoin typically used on his celebrity clients. And Griffin says that curling ones lashes is the essential beauty step too often overlooked by women. (I must admit, I was in awe of his long, curled lashes.) Enter Kevyn Aucoin’s Eyelash Curler which boasts a perfect angle and red silicone pad so that you can actually see where your lashes end and the curler begins.

Next, I hit up Hissyfit and the brand was busily launching a new product called the Clockpot ($60 and up at hissyfit.com). Created for Oprah by Makeup Artist Reggie Wells, this all-in-one palette comes in series for eyes, face or cheeks and offers up expert picked color combinations that make putting on a pretty face quick and effortless. Crystal Peters, who was representing Hissyfit at the show along with Reggie Wells himself, told me that Oprah uses the silicone-based product line which Peters says, “Feels just like a second skin.”

Lips Lock in Sex Appeal

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Apply lipstick to land a man, so says a recent study from Manchester University in the UK.  And while your own man has undoubtedly told you how much he likes your face au naturel, researchers claim that a touch of lipstick will draw, and hold, his attention.

In fact, the average man spends 5.4 seconds of the first 10 seconds of meeting a woman looking at her lips, according to the study. And if you think any lipstick hue will do, you’ve got another thing coming. The University’s research concluded that pink and red lipsticks wield the most power over your man’s attention span.

6.7 seconds of Allure

Pick a shade of pink for your pucker and you’ll get an average of 6.7 seconds of lip locked attention from men, according to our mates at Manchester.  Mattese Elite’s crisp fuchsia hue is just right for those who want to get noticed, which perhaps explains the kitschy name of this wearable color, “PornStar.”  Get it for $10 at matteseelite.com.

If you prefer your lipstick with a touch of shine, opt for Chanel Rouge Allure Laque in “Phoenix” (#78), an intense shade of pink that lasts for hours, while serving up full coverage and a touch of shine. Available for $32 at Chanel counters and at chanel.com.

Or, opt for a flattering shade of sparkling pink gloss found right at your local Target store. Jemma Kidd’s Air Kiss Shine Lip Gloss ($16) in “Poser,” is a true pink that starts off shining and ends up staining lips with color.

Fixated in 7.3 seconds

Pink may be pretty but red is riveting according the same Manchester study, which suggests that red lipstick will lock in his attention for 7.3 seconds.

My go-to red is Revlon’s Super Lustrous lipstick in “Fire & Ice,” a long, lasting and classic hue that sells for about $7 at CVS.

Kick it up a notch with Girlactik’s Star Gloss in “Ooh La La Red,” a sticky, sparkly gloss that really stays put; get it for $17 at girlactik.com. Those with a larger beauty budget will love Michael Marcus’ high pigment lipstick in “Ho Ho Ho,” a just-right red that sells for $24 at Dillard’s.

A Perfect 10

Orange may not have made the study, but shades of orange, from melon to mandarin, have a spot on my personal list of the best lipstick hues for summer, not to mention the appearance of orange lips as a trend to watch from runways to glossies.

Head to your local drugstore and pick up Revlon’s “Orange Flip,” a brave and flattering shade of lipstick I’ve been sporting of late.  Gloss is now in a stick thanks to the makeup mavens at Estee Lauder; I’m lovin’ their “Orange Poppy,” a pinkish tangerine that sells for $20 at local department stores. Back to the bargain bin, I also like CoverGirl’s “Temptation,” a gold speckled mandarin that sells for $6.99 at Walgreens.

Whatever hue you choose, be sure to wear what you love and as a fringe benefit, you may earn his adoration too.
