The 5 Things you Must Do to Look Gorgeous

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

There are thousands upon thousands of beauty products, and even more facials, wraps, hair treatments and the like… and all promise to make you look younger, better, thinner, tighter or, in some manner, more beautiful.  And while I’ve personally tested thousands of treatments and products, this week I’ve rounded up just five beauty musts for any woman who wants to look gorgeous.

Head to a Medical Spa. Regularly.

Head to a reputable medical spa, a local plastic surgeon or a dermatologist that offers aesthetic treatments and do what celebrities and other people whose looks you admire already do, take care of your face diligently and proactively.

Get Botox, if you need it. Opt for Microdermabrasion or photofacials to eradicate fine lines, hyperpigmentation and sun spots.  Lips losing volume? Plump ‘em (just don’t overdo it). Take care of your face the way you take care of your car; invest in regularly scheduled maintenance without fail.  This is the real secret to looking great for years to come; commit to it and work at it.  It’s that easy, and that difficult.

Buy a Silk Pillow Case

Talk to three different beauty experts and you’ll get three different reasons to sleep on silk.  When I first got lash extensions, my esthetician recommended I get a silk pillow case to avoid losing lashes at night.  When I got Brazilian Keratin, my hair stylists recommend I get a silk pillow case to protect my newly frizz-free ‘do. When I got Fraxel, my doctor recommended I get a silk pillowcase to avoid damaging my skin while I slept (no more waking up with sleep creases on my skin). The average person sleeps about one third of their life; a good silk pillow case costs about $20… you do the math.

Retinoids & Sunscreen

One skin care product that has been universally endorsed by skin care experts is retinoids, sold by prescription under brand names Renova and Retin-A. Not only will use of a retinoid keep skin exfoliated – an essential step in cell turn over – but retinoids can also help reduce or clear up acne, improve collagen production, lighten hyper pigmentation and improve skin texture.

Be cautious about using retinoids daily as they can be much too aggressive for many skin types.  And while I always insist that daily use of SPF is an essential step in maintaining healthy, youthful skin, this skin-care must becomes even more essential with retinoid use as skin becomes more sensitive to the sun.

Get Great Hair

Did you know that having great hair is one of your inalienable rights?  So, if you’re still struggling with your locks, in any capacity, it’s time to get it right. There are so many services available to the modern woman, there’s no reason not to have hair you adore. Keratin treatments can smooth and tame even the frizziest of ‘dos, glaze adds shine and hue to lackluster locks, extensions make long hair accessible to all. Great skin and great hair are the building blocks of great beauty. If your hair isn’t naturally great, it’s time to go out and get it.

Invest in Long Lashes

Until you’ve had uber-long lashes, via extensions or a lash growth product like Latisse, it’s hard to understand just how much of a difference lashes can make. But, the reason that seemingly every celeb, from People’s Magazine’s “Most Beautiful” Jennifer Lopez to bride-of-the-hour Kim Kardashian, has long, lush lashes  is that long lashes make a huge improvement in how one looks, both giving eyes a more youthful appearance and making eyes standout, sans makeup. Since I’ve tried dozens of lash growth serums and several types of lash extensions, I can vouch for the fact that many of these eye lash enhancers do the trick. Latisse, when used religiously,  is a rock star at making my lashes longer and thicker while nothing compares to semi-permanent lashes for instant lashification.

Glam Shoes: Three of a Kind

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

I’ve mentioned before (here) that when I love something, I typically believe that more is more.

I happened across these Vince Camuto studded shoes while on a shopping trip with my sister and I was instantly hooked. Originally, I picked up a pair in nude with gold studs but when a trip to the playground in said shoes ended badly (for the shoes); my husband surprised me with three new pairs (now, that’s a stud).

I get compliments each time I wear them, no matter the color, and they’re actually quite comfortable. I now own them in elephant with silver studs and black with silver. And while the 4.7 inch heel may look high, the platform makes them oh-so-wearable.  Just don’t wear them to the playground. But then, you probably already knew that…

Mani Monday: Glam Ink

Change is glamorous, no?

Typically, I’m hooked on classics, from the style of dress that I know complements my body type best, to the shade of my lipstick. But occasionally, the urge to shake things up becomes overwhelming and in those moments, there’s nothing more glamorous than breaking out of one’s mold.

This week, I’m opting for a “supercool” twist on a classic mani by pairing Perfect Formula polish in Deco (you may recall I sported this hue here) with Jessica’s Alluring Creature and Supercool Nail Tattoos from bigRuby.

The bigRuby nail tats are fairly easy to apply and can be used to amp up any basic mani. Simply remove a tattoo from its backing, apply to dry nails (over polish or on a bare nail) and then hold a cotton ball dipped in water on top of the tattoo for 15 seconds.  Finally, apply clear polish over the nail to “set” the tattoo; I used CND’s Super Shiney Top Coat.

The effect is unique, yet subtle enough that I’d try it again. I think I’ll experiment with a tone-on-tone effect, such as a set of grey bigRuby tattoos over a favorite slate polish.  And,  I’ll definitely take the tattoos to my favorite salon next time because, while change can be good, I never tire of getting a professional manicure.

P.S. bigRuby sent me several packages of tattoos, so I’ve got a couple of packages to share with you, my pretties. Just comment below if you’d like to try them and I’ll send two readers each a set.

P.P.S. Congrats to Jen who won last week’s Freebie Friday, the skin-saving duo from LaROCCA

Beauty Buddies

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

To lose 10 pounds, I’ll need to partner up with a buddy and keep my commitment to working out. Or, so say fitness experts across the nation. The thing is, I pay my workout buddy; her official title is personal trainer, meaning she never begs off because she’s not in the mood or has a hangover. I’ve got this exercise thing down.

So, this week, I turned my attention to another kind of partner in crime, a beauty buddy, if you will.  I mean, isn’t keeping a commitment to fabulous hair, shiny color, smooth skin and sparkling nails as important as a tight butt and toned abs? I say yes!

The truth is that, not unlike that morning workout, making the time to do all the grooming required to look great can be daunting.  That’s why I’m in search of a beauty buddy who will promise to “mentor” my beauty routine and make sure I’m always moving forward, not to mention act as my “spotter,” alerting me when my choices in beauty begin to falter or when it’s time to kick it up a notch. And of course, showing up at regular beauty work-out sessions, be they at the spa or at the corner nail salon, is essential.

Facials

Unlike your thighs, keeping your face in great shape does not require a daily dose of cardio. But heading to a trusty esthetician every four to six weeks is essential for glowing skin.   That means my skin-saving beauty buddy has to be willing to meet me at least once every six weeks at my favorite spa.  If we’re in a rush, we can get all the skin care we need in about 60 minutes and if time is on our side, we can add a massage or post-facial mocktail to the mix and make a morning of it. Any volunteers?

Manicures and Pedicures

Nail care is where the women are separated from the girls.  I believe that a weekly mani/pedi is essential. Even better, throw in an additional weekly polish change for variety. (Doing the same beauty exercises too often can get boring.) And for me, getting my nails done is fast and effective, not leisurely and lingering. All I need is a buddy to meet me once a week at a local salon for an express manicure and pedicure- we’re talking 45 minutes in and out.   And while it will undoubtedly be challenging to make that weekly commitment, think of how much better we’ll feel the next time we slip into a pair of open toed booties or slide on a sparkling cocktail ring. Are you in?

Cut and Color

I need a trim every 6 to 8 weeks as well as some kind of color (even if it’s just a glaze) and a deep conditioning treatment.  Not only do I need my beauty buddy to meet me at the salon – we’ll have tons of time to catch up while our color sets – but I also need her to make sure I don’t overextend myself or jump into some new style that I’m not ready for. She’ll also have to help keep me motivated because, on any given day, the urge to simply throw in the towel and wear a hat everywhere, may become too strong to overcome.  And while regular trips to our stylists may occasionally put a damper on our schedules, and even our wallets, it’ll be well worth it when we walk out of the salon full of bounce and body.

Not to worry, I’ve placed a few calls and sent a few emails —  it looks as if finding a friend who also wants to stay committed to looking great is much easier than convincing a girlfriend to meet up at 6 a.m. for a three mile run. Who knew?

Know When To Hold ‘Em, Know When to Throw ‘Em

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

Deciding which beauty products are worth salvaging and which should meet their maker can save you time, money, and, of course, priceless space in your makeup bag.

Here’s what you must know about which products to keep and which should go…

Save: Once empty, hold onto a few containers that previously housed cosmetics ranging from loose powder to loose eye shadows and the like. Then, the next time your favorite solid blush or powder eye shadow shatters, simply stow the left over pieces in one of your used containers and your favorite color lives on as a loose powder instead of a solid. I recently used this trick on a just-right-hue of blush that I picked up in Paris. When the blush tragically shattered, and I couldn’t replace the product online, nor convince my husband that a return trip to the City of Lights was warranted, I stored precious pieces in a container and grabbed myself a brush blush. Voila!

Toss: Friends have admitted to cutting open packages of product to get to the very last molecule of magic. Do that once if you must but after that one final use, toss it. Products that are meant to be stored in airtight containers won’t maintain their quality once exposed to air. Plus, you work hard, you deserve a full-sized replacement of anything you love enough to use to the last drop.

Save: Have you recently purchased a drugstore beauty product that you ended up despising? Don’t toss it! Many drugstores will take back product that you tried, as long as you have the receipt in tow. For example, CVS.com boasts a 100% satisfaction beauty guarantee that states, “If you are dissatisfied for any reason, you can return the beauty product (opened or unopened) along with your receipt or invoice to any CVS/pharmacy store. We will refund the full purchase price—no questions asked!” So don’t toss that wretched shade of lip gloss or that chalky eye liner, return it and save your hard earned cash.

Toss: Mascara that is dry and clumpy must be tossed! I’ve heard crazy advice – including one tip to heat up dry mascara with a blow dryer — please don’t; just toss it. You can, however, save money on mascara by extending its life; simply be sure not to “pump” mascara as this dries it out more quickly and only apply mascara to clean lashes, not lashes already caked with product.

Save: Down to the last drop of your favorite foundation? Since I’m a big believer in splurging on products that go onto your bare skin (like foundation or primer), I also say make the most of that pricey product by utilizing every bit of your beauty investment, down to the last drop. Applying foundation with a damp makeup sponge or foundation brush assures that a little will go a long way. You can also add a touch of moisturizer to foundation to get to the very last drops. But please, don’t save foundation that is separated and toss anything that doesn’t fit your skin tone like a glove.

Toss: Recovering from a cold sore or other contagious infection (pink eye, anyone?). Pretty please, toss any makeup you’ve used on the offending infection. I once had a doctor tell me my eye was scratched, not infected, so I went home and generously applied the mascara I’d been eschewing. The next day both eyes were swollen shut. I’m all for saving you money, but not at the expense of your health (not to mention your good looks). When in doubt, toss any makeup that may have been exposed to infections and never, ever share makeup with friends or strangers. That’s just common beauty sense.

Mani Monday: Crackled Concrete

Monday, August 15th, 2011

I admit it.  I’m guilty of matching my mani to my outfit.

No matter how I try to resist, the temptation to snap up a hue that matches my current attire is just too strong. No matter that I’ll be wearing something different tomorrow; the drive to coordinate today is overwhelming.

Which is why, this weekend, while wearing a gauzy, slate sweater and a pencil skirt, I couldn’t resist opting for an edgy mani thanks to two coats of OPI’s “Lincoln Park at Midnight” topped with China Glaze’s “Crackled  Concrete.”

Lincoln Park at Midnight + Crackled Concrete

If you’re interested in an easy way to elevate your typical mani, the China Glaze Crackle collection is chic, effortless and works with any polish underneath.  And, I’ve found that when a solid mani starts to chip, a quick crackle topcoat creates a new look and adds days to the life of your polish.

With so many crackle collections now on the market, what’s your favorite color combo?

P.S. The winner of last week’s Freebie Friday is Alyysa from thefashionlens.com; please email me here with your mailing address so I can send you the collection. Enjoy!

Freebie Friday: Glam Accessories Galore

Friday, August 12th, 2011

Meet one of my favorite online jewelry and accessory destinations, Spring Street. When Spring Street approached me with pictures of one of their fab new collections, I made a case for giving me a set to give to one of you, my pretties. (Always thinking of ya!) And what can I say, I la-la-love jewelry. I simply can’t get enough, can you?

One of our PrettyCity staffers is always jingling about the office. I think there’s something so charming about stacks of bangles piled up on a bare wrist, and the gentle chime they tend to exude.

Bangles from SpringStreetDesign.com

From charming to chic; three things I plan to embrace this fall are feathers, lace and pieces inspired by global fashion.

A Few of Spring Street's Must Have Earrings

To know me is to know that I don’t leave the house without a cocktail ring. And a manicure. Life is simply too short and sparkle makes me smile.

Cocktail Rings Sure to Make You Happy, too!

And the pièce de résistance is this stunning three-piece set called “Spice Market,” a transitional collection that pairs perfectly with flirty summer sundresses before transitioning to fall seamlessly and complementing camel coats, cashmere sweaters and riding boots.

Best of all, just leave a comment below and this weekend I’ll pick one winner of the three-piece set, courtesy of springstreetdesign.com!
