Taylor Swift Goes Glamorous

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

Taylor Swift recently shot a commercial for her new fragrance, Wonderstruck, but it’s her Christian Siriano dress, beautiful locks and gorgeous bold lips that I find oh-so-glamorous.

5 Minute Beauty Fixes

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

If you’ve got five minutes, you have all the time you need to look great. This week, I’ve rounded up the top ways to save time and still splurge on looking gorgeous.

Lash Out (just a bit)

No need to fully lash out to get the gorgeous benefits of enhanced lashes. Adding just a few lashes at the corners of the eyes can open up eyes, taking years of the face, all while serving up a side of sexiness without the overdoing the va-va-voom. Head to your favorite local lash expert and ask for cat eyes, a quick application of semi-permanent lashes to just the outer corner of eyes that can cost from $30 to $75. Or, DIY at home with Ardell Accent Lashes, available at drugstores for $3.49 a pair.

Smooth Skin

Some experts swear that elbows give away the age of many a well-maintained woman. What to do when you hit a dry patch, be it on elbows or knees? Head to the kitchen and grab a slice of fresh lemon. Add a dash of brown sugar to the top of the lemon and give dry elbows (or knees) a quick scrub.  The fruit acids in the lemon will exfoliate skin and over time, even lighten dark patches if needed.

Get up and Glow

When time is not on your side, you can get up and glow with a solid yet simple makeup routine. Minute one: Clean, smooth skin is a must so start with a 30-second facial with the help of Kate Somerville’s ExfoliKate. Minute two: Brush on a multi-tasking foundation, powder. I like Pur Minerals 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Foundation . Minute three: brighten your face (and take the attention off tired eyes) with a quick and illuminating pink blush applied to the apples of your cheeks. Try Maybelline’s Fit ME Blush in light pink, medium pink or deep mauve.  Minute four: Slick on a nude lip pencil followed by a bright hue of lipstick in a vivid red or crisp hot pink. Minute five: Light up eyes with several coats of your favorite mascara.

A Pimple Pops Up

Oh, the horror of a shiny, new zit on an important day.  Celebrities may head to the Derm to get a quick cortisone shot, thereby banishing unwelcome big-day blemishes, but most of us don’t have skin doctors that make house calls. Not to worry, all you need to blast blemishes on the fly is Zeno’s FDA-approved Hot Spot ($39.99 at myzeno.com). Just hold the heat-therapy Zeno up against the zit you want to zap and after a single 2 1/2 minute treatment, most pimples disappear within the day

Instant UpDo

Blame it on a late night out or simply falling victim to a bad hair day, there are some days that fabulous hair just isn’t in the cards (or on the schedule).  Help is on the way; and all a girl needs to banish bad hair days is dry shampoo to refresh tired and dirty locks and Goody’s magical Spin Pins to create a quick, easy and elegant updo. Head to your local drugstore for the supplies you need to save the day—and your ‘do.

Here’s your heroic hair list: 1) A set of Goody Spin Pins ($6.49) 2) Psssssst Instant Dry Shampoo ($6.99) and, if needed, a toothbrush and hair spray to tame fly aways. Refresh hair with a quick spray or two of Psssssst and then twist hair into a low bun. Secure the bun with a pair of Goody spin pins by simply twisting the pins at the base and top of bun. Then, apply a dash of hairspray to the toothbrush and use it to brush down any stray hairs. Chic and quick!

Scent of a Diva

Mariah Carey’s Lollipop Splash The Remix

It’s not every day that a signed Mariah Carey album shows up at my doorstep.

But a few weeks ago, that’s exactly what I got in the mail, along with three bottles of fragrance from Carey’s Lollipop Splash The Remix collection.  Apparently, the singer’s marketing people are going all out in trying to spread the word about Carey’s newest fragrance collection.

And I suppose it worked because, despite the fact that as I mentioned here, my signature scent is Boucheron (and I occasionally cheat with Gucci Guilty), I’ve been spritzing Carey’s Vision of Love on all week.  And I never even liked the song!

Vision of Love

According to mariahcarey.com, Vision of Love ($35)  is “a colorful chic fragrance inspired by the combination of French Macaroon and purple jasmine for a tasty surprise.”

I found the scent to be very sweet; in fact, my husband likened it to chocolate mint while my 10 year old son commented that I reminded him of cotton candy.

The other scents in the Lollipop Splash The Remix collection include Inseparable and Never Forget You.

While Carey’s taking care of new twins Moroccan Scott Cannon and Monroe Cannon, will you be lending your support to the Carey/Cannon family by wearing a Mariah Carey fragrance?

Mani Monday: Glamour by Essie

Essie's Brand New Bag Collection

A few weeks back, I divulged my newly found love for nail polish in taupe here. Not long after, I received a package from Essie with some of their chicest shades of this hip nail hue.

Essie's Glamour Purse

A lacquer called “Glamour Purse” from the Fall 2011 collection caught my eye, and I’m oh-so-glad it did as the rich, deep taupe is so gorgeous on, it just may become my new go-to polish for fall.

Best New Mascaras

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

Flip through the pages of your favorite glossy mag, and you’ll find no shortage of advertisements for mascaras that promise to serve up long, thick lashes.  But some mascara manufacturers seem to place more importance on creating pretty pictures than creating top-notch products.  (I automatically dismiss any mascara ad featuring models with lash extensions – it’s the principle!)  This week, I’ve rounded up the top three new mascaras on the market that really work; making real lashes look faux fabulous.

LashControl

Makeup artist Scott Barnes, who has worked with the likes of Beyoncé, Kate Hudson, and Jennifer Lopez, used to recommend that clients wipe excess mascara off the applicator. But with LashControl, which Barnes declares “a genius concept,” one can customize the amount of mascara on the brush.

LashControl’s patented squeezable applicator takes excess product off – or leaves it on — thanks to a built-in wiper sleeve at the mouth of the mascara tube that leaves as much, or as little, product as you like on the brush. Color coded and available in black lengthening, black volumizing and clear, LashControl is available online for $20 at lashcontrol.com and at upscale salons, spas and beauty boutiques.

Hourglass Film Noir Lash Lacquer

This mascara-like lacquer is an amazing product, for those who know how to use it. Designed to be applied over mascara, Film Noir Lash Lacquer is ideal for amping up lashes from work to play or just adding “wow” anytime.

The key to loving this lacquer is getting the application right. First apply mascara as usual. Next, get set to apply Lash Lacquer being sure to remove any excess product from the long, flat brush. After many attempts, I came to the conclusion that I loved Lash Lacquer most when I apply it in short strokes to the lashes in the outer corner or the eyes as well as lash tips.  Used properly, Lash Lacquer serves up impressive length and a shiny, dark black coating that is hard to replicate with just traditional mascara. Get it for $28 at Sephora.

Make-up Designory Volumizing Mascara

File this under “new to me,” Make-up Designory  (MUD) has a Volumizing Mascara that is amongst the best mascaras I’ve ever tried (and we’re talking hundreds upon hundreds here).

Rich in pigment and replete with fibers that coast lashes for va-va-voom volume, this easy-to-apply mascara goes one smoothly and doesn’t transfer to lids, even with long wear. I also adore the squeezable tube, which aids in even application.  Get it for $14 at mudshop.com or at upscale salons, spas and beauty boutiques.

P.S. The Winner of Last Week’s Freebie Friday is Terry Herman.

Freebie Friday: Powder your Nose, Glamorously

Friday, September 2nd, 2011

I’ve heard some say that one should never put on makeup in public. I disagree. It’s not the act of putting on makeup that’s tacky, it’s how some women do it.

You know that beaten up compact that holds the last precious pieces of a favorite powder? Or, the lip gloss that’s seen so much action, you now have to dig the applicator around the sides of the tube as if you’re on a treasure hunt?  Leave those at home.

I have a small jar full of crushed pieces of a once-compact-powder-blush that I just love.  I use it nearly every day, but I don’t take it on the road.

What I do take with me everywhere, however, is a Model Mirror from Les Tai Tai (pronounced lay tie tie). This chic compact boasts built in LED lights ideal for any low-light situation, think club, dark restrooms, airplane cabins and the like.  The light turns on and off via a button on the right side of the mirror. The Model Mirror also offers up 2X magnification on the illuminated side.

Available in a variety of designs, I’m enamored with the Excuse Moi and Good as Gold designs, shown here. Also taken with the collection are celebrities such as Mila Kunis, Alexa Chung and Gisele Bündchen.

Model Mirrors are available for $25 online at lestaitai.com. Plus, one of my pretties will win the Good as Gold design this week. Just leave a comment below and let me know which design from lestaitai.com that you most adore!

Happy Freebie Friday, my pretties -)
