A Time To Shop

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

I hate to admit that I ever waste time, but the truth is, I’ve been known to draw a warm bubble bath, pour a glass of wine and turn on the Real Housewives of… any city.

I’ve lost two iPhones to bubble baths; apparently while Apple technology is amazing, it isn’t meant to swim.

Recently, however, I’ve found a much more glamorous way to fill minutes spent sitting at stoplights or waiting at my dermatologist’s office.  It’s called ShopStyle  — the app.

Favorites in the ShopStyle App

I’ve been a fan ShopStyle.com site for years because it serves up easy to navigate searches from multiple, high end retailers and e-tailers on the items I need. So, for example, when I must have a new pair of nude boots for fall, I simply go to ShopStyle.com, type in “nude boots,” and Bam! I’m checking out Jimmy Choo in the buff from BlueFly, Sergio Rossi in nude way above the knee from Style Bop and more.

But the App takes my shopping, and my style, to a new level.  While planning a recent trip, I was able to search for pieces  I needed — trench coat, denim skirt, walking boots — mark certain items as favorites, sign up for Sales Alerts and even make purchases right from my iPhone.

Plus, it’s free for VIPs like you and me — ain’t life glam?

What Your Mani is Saying About You

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

New studies (by me) suggest that the color of your manicure can lend insight into your age, your sense of style, and even your state of mind.  Turns out your talons can talk, and here’s what they’re saying…

Join the Color Club

Forget facelifts and sports cars, the fastest way to look and feel younger is to experiment with your nail polish. Based on my research (primarily asking manicurists at several of my favorite salons and spas), sticking with the same color of polish is the single biggest indicator of (old) age.  Yup, opting for the same shade of light peach each week is giving away your age, or worse, belying it.

Zoya's Pippa

What could be easier than updating your look, and taking years off your style than simply experimenting with the newest haute hues in lacquer?  Those ready to turn back the clock should try “Pippa” from Zoya, a sunny yellow crème lacquer,  or “Yara,” a smoky olive polish  paired with a splash of bright gold glitter; $8 each at Zoya.com.

Therapy for Nails

“I talked to your manicure yesterday; she said you’re depressed.”  If manicures could talk,  what would yours say about you?  Based on my research (primarily comparing my girlfriends manicures to their moods), no unhappy woman opts for a canary yellow or kelly green manicure.

Feeling frisky? You’re sure to pick a crisp crimson for nails while pretty pinks may divulge an oh-so-lady like mood. Women who wish to break away from the norm have been known to opt for a teal green. And the color that screams sad and lonely?  That would be no-color or chipped polish, of course.

Essie's Midnight Cami

Soothe yourself with calming blue manicures in of-the-moment shades like Essie’s “Midnight Cami,” loved by Kristen Stewart, or Essie’s “Turquoise and Caicos,” a sea green. To get you — or him — going, opt for red, a color that is said to stimulate one’s heart rate, such as Essie’s “One of a Kind,” a poppy red that sells for $8 at local salons and spas.

Best Dressed Nails

For those who want their manicures to speak to their sense of style, it’s all about departing from the traditional mani.  Ombre and gradient manicures are haute for fall while manicure appliqués, think black lace  applied with a clear top coat, or Sally Hansen Salon Effects Nail Polish Strips for the DIY crew, are easy updates to the classic manicure.

My Sally Hansen Mani

Gradient manicures are easily done at home (more info here), simply pick three colors of polish in complementary hues (such as brown, taupe and gray) and paint each nail a different color, from light to dark.  Head to your favorite salon for an appliqué manicure or try Sally Hansen Salon Effects Nail Polish Strips ($9.99 at CVS). These DIY strips are somewhat easy to apply and while the finished product is not as chic as in in-salon manicure, the end look, from faux animal prints to hounds tooth patterns, is an affordable alternative to a professional appliqué manicure.

Mani Monday: A Glam Take on Ombre

Monday, October 17th, 2011

Over the weekend, I spotted an ombre cake that made my heart skip a beat.

But, since there are no weddings in my future, and even I don’t think I could pull off serving something like this at our next dinner party, I decided to re-purpose the concept for today’s Manicure.

For ease, I opted for a gradient manicure rather than a true ombre effect. I grabbed a few of my favorite taupe, gray and silver polishes and went to  work. This is an oh-so-easy manicure to do yourself, and I found the finished look to be surprisingly glamorous.

Grab any hues you have on hand in complementary tones or take inspiration from my shades of choice: Jessica Goddess, Cheeky Monkey Hangover, Essie Glamour Purse and Deborah Lippmann Waking Up In Vegas, all topped with CND’s Super Shiny Topcoat.

No More Baggage: How to Get Rid of Under Eye Bags

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

Over the years, there are many bags I’ve admired. When I was younger, I yearned for a Louis Vuitton. I finally got one for my twenty-fourth birthday and, for a whopping six hundred dollars, it was the tiniest purse I’d even seen.
In Paris last year, I stood outside the Lancel boutique admiring the spring Brigitte Bardot Bag. The price tag made my LV look like a bargain so, needless to say, I left the City of Lights with the same tote I came with.

And while I love a big bag as much as the next girl, under eye bags have never been on my must have list. Like many women, these most annoying bags are something I’m constantly trying to avoid, and certainly not something I aspire to “wear.” The good news is, with a few easy steps, we can all keep our bags on our shoulders, where they belong. Here’s how…

 The Power of Potassium
Bananas, apricots, avocados and other foods that are rich in potassium can help eradicate under eye bags that are caused by the lack of this mineral. That means taking the simple step of including a daily banana in your diet, or even taking a daily supplement if you prefer, could be the delicious cure to your under eye problems.

Beauty Sleep
Sleeping Beauty was onto something; it turns out that getting at least seven hours of sleep per night is a must to avoid under eye bags and stay gorgeous. Make getting that beauty sleep even more efficient at eradicating under eye bags by elevating your head slightly with an extra pillow, which will help avoid excessive fluid collecting under the eyes.

 Step Away from the Salt
Salt is public enemy #1 when it comes to under eye bags and, if you tend to wake up in the morning with bags that dissipate as the day goes on, salt is likely the cause. One way to get excess salt out of your diet is to decrease consumption of packaged foods and, if you must eat canned foods, rinsing them prior to cooking can wash away some of the excess sodium. Better yet, eat fresh fruits and vegetables when possible.

Cucumber Times Two
Yes, sliced cucumbers may be stored in the fridge and then placed on eyes for 15 minutes to help reduce swelling. But, did you know that cucumbers are also high in water and contain ingredients that stimulate the kidneys? Proper kidney function is essential in reducing under eye bags meaning that after you slice those morning cukes, you may just want to eat a few as well.
