Celebrity Lip Service

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

Dan Aykroyd has Vodka.  Heidi Klum has Candy. Snooki has a line of Head Phones.  And while these celebrity endorsed products certainly sound interesting, I’ve discovered three celeb-loved collections worth paying lip service.

Rachel Zoe via Exude

Rachel Zoe Style

Is your lipstick so five minutes ago? Clearly you aren’t wearing Exude, a new lip collection recommended by Rachel Zoe, stylist and Exude Lipstick brand ambassador. Exude Lipstick features a mint scent, as well as Vitamins E  and C. There are also glosses designed to hydrate lips with a complex of Omega-3 and Omega-6 essential fatty acids, Goji Berry and Vitamin E.

But this isn’t your typical lipstick, Exude’s unique crystal applicator releases a pre-determined portion of lipstick each time, meaning these lipsticks hold onto their chic shapes. Zoe names Exude Lipstick’s Crimson, Scarlet Red and Coral as the “it” colors for Spring 2012. Get yours, $29 each, at exudelipstick.com.

Khloe Kardashian Odem

Dramatic Kardashians

No one can accuse the Kardashians of being low key, nor is the lip product that nearly every Dash sister has been seen wearing, Violent Lips. Violent Lips are vegan, temporary lip tattoos that come in a variety of FDA-approved colors and patterns ($14.95 for a set of three at violentlips.com).

Those who dare can opt for bold animal prints, skull and crossbones, rainbows, fishnets, sparkles and a more subdued selection of solid hues. Kylie Jenner opted for the British Flag (no disrespect intended, I assume), Kendall Jenner went with a lavender leopard print, Khloe Kardashian Odem chose silver glitter and Kim Kardashian posted a picture of herself sporting the black and white checker pattern. Even Lady GaGa has chimed in on the Violent Lips trend, making an appearance in blue glitter Violent Lips.

Kat Von D via Sephora.com

The Real Deal from Kat Von D

Forget temporary, those enamored with real tattoos are sure to know of  famed tattoo artist Kat Von D  from LA Ink. Not nearly as new, but certainly newsworthy, Kat Von D created a makeup collection, sold exclusively at Sephora, that calls upon Von D’s understanding of vivid colors and art.

I’m enamored with Painted Love Lipstick, $19,  available in an expansive collection of rich, vivid hues such as Hellbent, a blood red, A-Go-Go, reddish coral and Backstage Bambi, an ultra-hot pink.  The collection also includes a Tattoo Concealer ($25), because changing lipstick is a whole lot easier than changing tattoos.

Promotionally Sponsored Post: Resolve to Look and Feel Gorgeous

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

Right about now, that New Year’s resolution may be looking like a distant memory. Yup, about this time each year, millions of people learn — and then relearn — that resolutions are far too often broken.

That’s why I “resolved” to make a few minor tweaks in my lifestyle. Eat one more piece of fruit per day. Eat an extra green veggie daily. Work out one more day a week. Because, while I don’t need a complete overhaul, I always aim to do better, so I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite tips from Secrets of Gorgeous: Hundreds of Ways to Live Well While Living It Up by Esther Blum.

Skip the 100 calorie packs: Blum contends that many of us are eating more than double the portions sizes our body requires, meaning we’re packing on an additional five pounds per year. But those 100 calories packs are, according to the author, “100% completely processed foods, chock-full of chemicals, sugar and preservatives.” The best thing to do with that 100 calorie pack? Use it as a guide to appropriate portion sizes and then eat 100 calories of something healthy.

Hangover helpers: No, Blum doesn’t advocate overindulging but let’s face it– sometimes that livin’ it up mantra of ours goes a bit too far. She recommends staving off misery the morning after with a cocktail of natural supplements including Magnesium, L-glutamine, MSM, and N-acetyl Cysteine as well as drinking tomato juice and eating crackers with raw honey to help metabolize alcohol. The fix itself is enough to make me never want to drink again.

Sweet Feet: Running out of that fancy scrub you shelled out thirty bucks for at Sephora? Blum serves up this deliciously effective recipe for an at-home exfoliating scrub for tootsies. Combine ½ cup sugar, 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil and 2 drops of essential oil. Mix well and scrub away rough callused skin by applying this concoction at least twice weekly and disposing of any left over product once a week.

Living well while living it up? That’s a resolution worth keeping.

Happy Valentine’s Day, Love

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

Happy V-Day Pretties.

I hope your day is chock full of love from every direction and tonight finds you glamorously intertwined with someone you adore (even if that someone is simply you).

I just found out that a very good friend is expecting a new bundle of joy and since my family (husband and two sons) are the loves of my life, I couldn’t resist posting this inspiring story of motherhood that I keep posted on my office chalkboard. I did a quick search and couldn’t unearth the author’s name so if anyone knows it, do tell.

Wishing you all lots of love…

We are sitting at lunch on day when my daughter casually mentions that she and her husband are thinking of “starting a family.”

“We’re taking a survey,” she says half-joking.  “Do you think I should have a baby?”

“It will change your life,” I say, carefully keeping my tone neutral.

“I know,” she says, “no more sleeping in on weekends, no more spontaneous vacations…”

But that is not what I meant at all.  I look at my daughter, trying to decide what to tell her.  I want her to know what she will never learn in childbirth classes.

I want to tell her that the physical wounds of child bearing will heal, but becoming a mother will leave her with an emotional wound so raw that she will forever be vulnerable.

I consider warning her that she will never again read a newspaper without asking, ” What if that had been MY child?”  That every plane crash, every house fire will haunt her.  That when she sees pictures of starving children, she will wonder if anything could be worse than watching your child die.

I look at her carefully manicured nails and stylish suit and think that no matter how sophisticated she is, becoming a mother will reduce her to the primitive level of a bear protecting her cub.  That an urgent call of “Mom!” will cause her to drop a soufflé or her best crystal without a moment’s hesitation.

I feel that I should warn her that no matter how many years she has invested in her career, she will be professionally derailed by motherhood. She might arrange for childcare, but one day she will be going into an important business meeting and she will think of her baby’s sweet smell.  She will have to use every ounce of discipline to keep from running home, just to make sure her baby is all right.

I want my daughter to know that every day decisions will no longer be routine.  That a five year old boy’s desire to go to the men’s room rather than the women’s at McDonald’s will become a major dilemma.  That right there, in the midst of clattering trays and screaming children, issues of independence and gender identity will be weighed against the prospect that a child molester may be lurking in that restroom.

However decisive she may be at the office, she will second-guess herself constantly as a mother.  Looking at my attractive daughter, I want to assure her that eventually she will shed the pounds of pregnancy, but she will never feel the same about herself.  That her life, now so important, will be of less value to her once she has a child.  That she would give it up in moment to save her offspring, but will also begin to hope for more years-not to accomplish her own dreams, but to watch her child accomplish theirs.

I want her to know that a cesarean scar or shiny stretch marks will become badges of honor.

My daughter’s relationship with her husband will change, but not in the way she thinks. I wish she could understand how much more you can love a man who is careful to powder the baby or who never hesitates to play with his child. I think she should know that she will fall in love with him again for reasons she would now find very unromantic.

I wish my daughter could sense the bond she will feel with women throughout history who have tried to stop war, prejudice and drunk driving. I hope she will understand why I can think rationally about most issues, but become temporarily insane when I discuss the threat of nuclear war to my children’s future.

I want to describe to my daughter the exhilaration of seeing your child learn to ride a bike.  I want to capture for her the belly laugh of a baby who is touching the soft fur of a dog or cat for the first time.  I want her to taste the joy that is so real it actually hurts.

My daughter’s quizzical look makes me realize that tears have formed in my eyes.  “You’ll never regret it,” I finally say.

How to Hide Acne Scars

Friday, February 3rd, 2012

If past pimples are rearing their ugly little heads, here are my top tips for hiding the evidence of blemishes from days gone by.

Step one: Apply a primer (preferably with silicone) in circular motions on the scar. I love Rae Cosmetics Surface Primer with SPF 20 ($36 at raecosmetics.com).

Step two: Apply concealer in circular motions across the scar. As I mentioned here, for serious coverage I really like Dermablend products and their Smooth Indulgence concealer ($21 here) is no exception.

Step three: Apply a translucent powder with a q-tip.

Viola! Bye, bye blemish.
