Don’t Sweat It! Makeup That Can Stand the Heat

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

If you’re one of those women who never wears a stitch of makeup and looks stunning regardless, no need to read on.

But if, like many of us, you’ve been known to wear lip gloss to the beach and mascara to the gym, I’ve rounded up the top tips and products to keep you looking oh-so-pretty even as temperatures heat up.

For Face

Intense heat calls for makeup that provides coverage, SPF and an uncanny ability not to run. All hail the tinted moisturizer, a fabulous beauty invention that’s especially essential as the weather heats up.

I swear by Physician’s Formula Healthy Wear SPF 50 Tinted Moisturizer because it serves up generous coverage and smooth application. Available at Ulta for $14.99  for 1 oz., this tinted moisturizer offers broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection paired with breathable coverage that conceals imperfections effortlessly.

Should you find yourself in a really hot spot, beware of powder touch-ups this season. Instead, opt for powder-coated blotting papers that reduce excess sebum and stamp out shine. I like Girlfriends BFF Blotting Papers ($6 at girlfriendsbff.com) which I discovered at  last year’s Beauty Sample Sale and Bobbi Brown Blotting Papers, $20 at Nordstrom.

For Eyes

During summer months, a smokey eye is bound to become a hot mess, so apply eye makeup with a light hand. Opt for a Waterproof Mascara and, if you must wear eyeliner, it should also be water proof. I prefer a natural eye during the hottest months of the year, think cream-based shadow in near nude shades of pink, peach and tan.

One of the best waterproof mascaras I’ve come across is BadGal Waterproof Mascara; get it for $19 at benefitcosmetics.com. In the drugstore, opt for Maybelline XXL Pro by EyeStudio Waterproof Volume Microfiber Mascara for about $7 at Walgreens.

Most importantly, you absolutely must protect those pretty peepers form the sun’s harsh rays. You’re never too young (or old) to get religious about using an eye cream with SPF. I use Sun Wrinkle Control Eye Contour Care SPF 30 from Clarins ($28 at Sephora). Promising to prevent lines and wrinkles, Sun Wrinkle Control Eye Contour Care is an oil-free eye treatment that protects the sensitive eye skin against UVA/UVB without irritating.

For Lips

While some experts recommend gloss on hot summer days, I say skip it in favor of a lip stain that is sure to last. Smashbox makes a legendary stain called Limitless Lip Stain & Color Seal Balm ($23 at Sephora) that’s available in a range of hues from berry, a raspberry, to guava, a bright orange, and beyond.  Limitless imparts a tint of color that lasts for hours, doesn’t feather and hydrates lips to boot.

With the right products, you’ll never have to let ‘em see your makeup feather, run, transfer or melt, no matter how hot the weather, or your workout, gets.

The Week in Review(s)

Friday, April 20th, 2012

Happy Friday, Pretties! Here’s what I happened across this week in the beauty trenches…

via Sephora.com

1) Make Up For Ever Eye Shadow

I unpacked a box full of crisp colors from the Make Up For Ever line and expected, as usual, the hue housed within each sleek black compact to lose its pop on my lids. Not so with Make Up For Ever’s professional eye shadows; $20 at Sephora.

The shadow is said to boast “high pigment density” for maximum coverage and color clarity and my, oh my, this is so true. From a flattering chartreuse to a matte lilac, these shadows paint lids in shades that oh-so-closely resemble the colors in the compacts. And, once applied, they simply stay put. Love it!

2) Phytomer Performance Jeunesse

Best suited for mature skin, I’m probably not the ideal candidate for Phytomer’s Performance Jeunesse Wrinkle Radiance Serum. This serum contains a new vectorized marine ingredient, Seastem Ciblactive, that promises to replenish skin cells after the first application. Plus, a unique texture aims to immediately blend into skin, recreating the appearance of younger skin. At $128 per ounce it will have to work wonders to earn my love it vote. A few days into trying out this new product, I’m undecided.

3) Epic Flat Iron from ONE

Preserving energy and hair health is no small task. But, it’s one that the Epic Collection aims to tackle with its upscale line of professional-grade heat stylers that call upon an Ionic Intel System and Energy Smart Technology to not only protect your tresses but also protect the environment.

The Energy Smart system automatically decrease the flat iron temperature when the iron is idle. (Haven’t we all left our flat irons on for longer than anticipated?) Tourmaline technology seals in moisture and eliminates frizz in hair while a World Volt automatically converts between Fahrenheit and Celsius so that you can straighten locks in NYC tonight and be frizz-free in Paris tomorrow. Get it for $240 at www.onestyling.com.

4) Mirenesse’s Instant Lash Transplant

Allow me to start by saying that I swear by Latisse for long lashes. And, after using Latisse for months my lashes are long and lush. But are they long enough? Never! So, I was excited to try Mirenesse’s Instant Lash Transplant ($49.95), a two step lash extension system that the company claims will “add up to 10X the volume  or lengthen lashes by up to 200% for over 24hrs.”

The system includes a transplant gel which is applied prior to applying a lash fiber product. Next, the transplant gel is applied once more.  This one may take some practice and I haven’t mastered it enough to endorse it yet so stay tuned. Here’s hoping Mirenesse’s Instant Lash Transplant delivers.

Bye, Bye Crow’s Feet

Wednesday, April 18th, 2012

Jenny McCarthy, via people.com, believes in "just a little bit" of Botox

Yes, you can fight fine lines and crow’s feet with a daily regimen designed to prevent and protect. Wrinkles and crow’s feet are the inevitable results of time, or are they?  Actually, environmental factors such as sun exposure and lifestyle choices, like smoking, are a primary cause of aging.

You can protect yourself by using a sunscreen daily. (Yes, even in the winter.)

In terms of treatment, Botox makes a big impact on crow’s feet. This is considered off-label use of the product and it’s important that you go to a doctor or nurse who absolutely knows what they are doing. The key is experience, the more injections your professional of choice has administered in this area, the better your results will be. And yes, I can personally endorse Botox as effective for combating crow’s feet. (Along with 90% of Hollywood, by my estimates.)

Concealing fine lines with makeup is tough,  if not impossible. Plus, one wrong move can worsen your under eye woes.  The last thing you want to do is spotlight fine lines by applying makeup that accentuates wrinkles.  The key here is to use a light application of a hydrating product; I swear by Being True’s Protective Illuminating Concealer (read about it here).

Also, avoiding mascara and liner at the lower lash can help make sure that no product gets caught in fine lines since darkness in this area will highlight wrinkles.

I believe in aging glamorously. And telling the truth. How about you?

The Week in Reviews

Friday, April 13th, 2012

Happy Friday, Pretties! Here’s what I happened across this week in the beauty trenches…

1) Joanna Vargas Skincare

via joannavargas-skincare.com

I received the Joanna Vargas skincare collection including Daily Serum, Rejuvenating Serum and Vitamin C Face Wash. Priced at $65 and up, the collection is not cheap, but when it comes to skin care, cheap isn’t necessarily the way to go. I’m loving the Vitamin C Wash, chock full of powerful antioxidants including Acai and Goji berry plus a proprietary blend of citrus oils to revitalize skin. I’m an oily-skinned girl and this cleanser does not induce break-outs but truly leaves skin glowing. Expect to see this one featured in one on my “love it” columns down the road.

2) La Roche-Posay Toleriane Ultra

via laroche-posay.us

You gotta love a product designed for “intolerant skin.” I’m not sure if that’s my skin but some days, I certainly feel like my complexion is intolerable. After trying the new Clear + Brilliant Laser Treatment at Spa Derma (more on that to come), I was introduced to Toleriane Ultra thanks to the charming Lloyd from Spa Derma. Ideal for my sensitive post-laser skin, this intensely hydrating product soothes sensitive and allergic skin.  Neurosensine is the active ingredient in Toleriane Ultra and it promises to target and soothe skin irritation. Post-laser I can attest it truly works. Get it for about $35 at local medical spas.

3) MUD Lip Glaze

via mudshop.com

Make-up Designory continues to thrill with top-notch products that truly deliver. Their mascara is one of my absolute favorites and this week I tried their Lip Glaze ($12) for a Best and Worst Lip Gloss story in progress. Smooth, not sticky, Lip Glaze serves up a splash of color in a squeezable tube. I have it in “Cupid” which looks very hot pink on the Make-up Designory site but is actually a perfect apricot in person.

4) Shiseido Shimmering Rouge, Mango 316

via shiseido.com (not Mango 316)

Not only is this hue the most wearable way I’ve found to sport orange lips, I also love the consistency of Shiseido’s Shimmering Rouge ($25). One of the newest hues, Mango, didn’t disappoint with its sheer color and lasting formula. I’ll be featuring this product in an upcoming color story. Love it!

The Best Powders

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

Cleopatra’s  was rumored to be crafted of crocodile excrements.  In ancient Japan, it was made of rice flour.   During the Italian Renaissance, it was crafted from arsenic. And while the ingredients in face powder have come a long way, baby, one thing hasn’t changed: powder has played a starring role in makeup bags for centuries. This week, after trying over 37 powders, I’ve rounded up the latest  and greatest powder offerings on the market, all tested and approved by me.

Best Anti-Aging Powder: Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation from Hourglass Cosmetics

Immaculate may be the word Hourglass chose to represent one of their newest products but “skeptical” was the word that came to mind as I read the product description. Available for $55 at hourglasscosmetics.com as well as Sephora, Barneys and other retailers, the product promised to “absorb oil, camouflage imperfections, and ensure a long-lasting flawless finish—without the need for touchups.” After using the product once,  I was cautiously optimistic. After several uses,  my new word for Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation is “hooked.” This product goes on flawlessly, stays matte for hours, and true to its promise, perfects the appearance of skin every moment along the way.

Best Powder for Blemish Prone Skin: Proactiv SheerFinish Mineral Pressed Foundation

Who knew that the company that is so good at eradicating imperfections could also help cover them up?  Enter Proactiv’s SheerFinish Mineral Pressed Foundation, available in 12 shades, as well as translucent. This compact powder is ideal for blemish-prone skin in need of covering redness, blemishes and birthmarks.  Get it for $25 at proactivcatalog.com.

Best Powder For Less Than $10: Black Opal Invisible Oil Blocking Powder

No matter your skin tone, Black Opal’s color-free Invisible Oil Blocking Powder does just what it promises, blends seamlessly into skin.  The oil-absorbing formula is hypoallergenic and suits all skin types. Plus, retailing for about nine bucks at places such as Wal-Mart and online at blackopalbeauty.com, this reliable powder is accessible and affordable. And no, this is not a new powder, but it’s fabulousness is news to me.

Best Two-In-One Product: Rain Cosmetics’ Dual Powder Foundation

Like many of today’s powder-foundation hybrids, Rain Cosmetics’ Dual Powder Foundation provides the coverage of a foundation with the matteness of a powder. What sets Rain apart is the ability to customize coverage from light to medium paired with an expansive range of shades from Touch of Ivory to Walnut Bronze. Oil and fragrance free, this fairly new collection (launched in 2008) has earned a long-lasting spot on my vanity. Get it for $32 at RainCosmetics.com.

Have you tried any of these powders?  What’s your favorite powder?

Glamorous Lounging

Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

I know what you’re thinking… who has time to lounge? While you probably don’t spend afternoons lying on a chaise lounge in silk pajamas drinking champagne, there are undoubtedly moments – especially as summer approaches — that your only destination for the day is the backyard or, better yet, the pool. And what about lazy Sundays when your highest ambition is to walk out to the curb and grab the Times? Those are lounging days, my pretties.

I adore delicious days with nothing on the to-do list, but there’s no excuse for those days to be absent of style. Toss those torn sweats and rubber flip flops, let’s lounge glamorously.

If the Shoe Fits

Those who know me know that I seldom head out on the town without wearing alarmingly high heels.  But around the house, I prefer to take things down a notch. Frustrated with tacky slippers and cheap rubber flip flops, I’ve taken to wearing ballet flats as slippers.

My favorites include the soft leather Corso Como Festive ballet flats ($60), Gabriella Rocha’s Francesca ($37.50) and Bloch’s Luxury Ballet Flat ($115.50); all available online at Zappos.com. The benefits of wearing the ultra-comfortable ballet flat include protecting the bottoms of your feet from wear and tear (keep that pedicure working for you longer) and providing arch support. And, since ballet flats are bona-fide shoes, you can step out at a moment’s notice.

Dressed to Chill

House•dress/noun: A simple, usually washable, dress suitable for wearing while doing housework.

The definition of the housedress may seem archaic to the modern woman but the concept is timeless. Where is it written that while lounging you can’t be comfortable, chic and crease-free? Enter the concept of the housedress, a cozy, flattering, wash-and-wear dress that is perfect for everything from catching up on The Real Housewives to heading to the beach or taking the kids to the park.  Yup, the housedress has most certainly evolved (unlike that velour tracksuit).

Key elements to look for in a housedress include wearable fabric (it must be washable and it can’t wrinkle easily) and comfort (no tight belts or elastic straps – you’re lounging after all). I like the IRO Knit Mini Dress ($178 at Saks), the Stripe Flutter-Sleeve Knit Dress ($29.50 at Delias.com) and Tommy Hilfiger’s Striped Knit Shift ($59 at Macy’s).

My favorite housedress, currently hanging in my closet,  is cotton with a sequined skirt. Yes, sequins.

Lock Down Casual Style

Even I have to admit that lounging glamorously should not include an hour spent working on hair and makeup (such a shame)! Not to worry, I’ve got three quick hair styles that women with many hair types can easily master.

1)     The Side Bun: Sweep hair into a low ponytail secured behind the ear on one side of your head. Twist the ponytail into a bun (tight or messy depending on your preference) and secure with a bobby pin. Wear the side bun sleek or, for curly or wavy hair, leave locks loose and casual.

2)     Undone Side Braid: Flip your head over and run hands through hair to create volume. Next, pull hair to one side and braid – just the very bottom portion of hair – and secure with a small rubber band. Done.

3)     Half Updo: First, apply a dab of mouse to fine hair or opt for a quick spray of dry shampoo for oily hair. Part hair down the middle and separate just the sides of hair; twist both sides of hair and secure them at the crown of your head with a small clip or bobby pins leaving the rest of your locks flowing.

And while you’re “housework” may be gardening, babysitting, running errands or just relaxing, you’re sure to look effortlessly chic wherever you lounge.

Is Marriage Un-Glamorous?

Friday, April 6th, 2012

via huffingtonpost.com

Marriage is History.

At least according to 51% of women  under 30, and 46% of women overall, surveyed by Glamour Magazine, who believe  marriage is becoming outdated. (The survey, conducted by Glamour, included 3,250  women from the ages of 18 to 40.)

Marriage may in fact be history for Jennifer Lopez and Marc  Anthony or Heidi Klum and Seal, but for some of us, marriage is not over. It’s  not history. True, every second of your marriage will not be glamorous, but  there can be some breathtaking moments.

So, for the 92% of women (and men) who, also according to  Glamour, want to get married someday, here are some tips for creating wedded  bliss:

Forget 50/50. Some days you will have to give  110% to keep your marriage strong.  Other days, you’ll be on the receiving end  of all that giving.

When, and if, you decide to have children, don’t  forget your first baby. Yup, your hubby. You may be tired, cranky, hormonal  even but that man you married will still need your love. Make him a priority,  too.

Believe in your marriage.  To succeed in anything, you need confidence  that you can succeed.  In that way,  staying happily married is no different than anything you take on.  The first step, is believing you can do it.  The next step is putting in the hard work to make it happen.

Marry the man, not the ring (or the party). Get married for the man, not the diamond. And certainly don’t trick yourself into  saying yes to the wrong guy so that you can have the wedding of your dreams.  (We’ve all recently seen how that plays out.)  Go for the marriage  of your dreams instead.

Wishing you happily ever after, whatever that means to you.

Facial in a Jar? Yes, please.

Friday, April 6th, 2012

We all know about the importance of beauty sleep but, for  the average woman, sleep, like everything else in our lives, has to find a spot  on the to do list.

And, with my own beauty sleep in short supply, I grasp onto  any chance at appearing well rested. That’s why when Korres sent along one of their  newest products, Advanced Brightening Sleeping Facial, I jumped at the opportunity  to take multitasking to the next level.

Sephora.com touts Korres’ Advanced  Brightening Sleeping Facial ($48) as an, “overnight  facial-in-a-jar” and a “breakthrough in beauty sleep.” Cautiously optimistic, I applied a quarter-sized dollop of the product to my face and neck  before bedtime, and after a particularly draining day.

The next day, I awoke to legitimately  refreshed skin.  In fact, my complexion  looked better to me than it had in weeks. And this was just day one. After 14  days, Korres promises my skin will be noticeably brighter, even toned and radiant. And looking radiant is something I definitely have time for.
