Fave makeup looks from fall fashion week 2013

La Perla Fall 2013 Presentation

No doubt you’ve seen tons of fashion coverage from NYFW 2013, but, for beauty addicts like us, it’s the hair, makeup, nails and more that truly steal  the shows.

I’m a huge fan of Hourglass Cosmetics’ complexion perfecting products (including my favorite, Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation, $55).  And, the looks created by makeup artist Moani Lee for Hourglass at the La Perla fall 2013 presentation illustrate why: the appearance of flawless skin.

Then, there are those lips, perfectly painted in a classic creme red.  This is the kind of makeup that never goes out of style. Coco Chanel would totally approve.

Lips were prepped with Hourglass No. 28 Lip Oil, a new product launching this summer, before being painted in a custom mix of Femme Rouge Velvet Crème Lipstick in Raven and Icon.

No need to wait for fall, or fashion week, as this look, in my book, is the epitome of glamour, every day.

G Body Art Hair Base Salon

Thursday, December 20th, 2012

Yesterday, I headed back to Hair Base Salon, one of my go-to destinations for lash extensions as I mentioned here, to review a new service call G Professional Body Art. Akin to temporary tattoos but much more intricate and artistic, G Body Art is actually hand applied body art complete with custom blended colors and accented with Swarovski crystals, also applied by hand.

I decided on a large a necklace from the “Champagne Bubble Dreams” collection that costs about $68 to apply (including Swarovski crystals). Using clear glue, the outline of the necklace was applied to my skin.  Next, my glitter color of choice was applied. I selected a combination of back and silver that resulted in a pewter hue.

Finally, Swarovski crystals were applied by hand using a tiny pair of tweezers and aforementioned glue. Excess glitter was finally brushed off my skin and the end result, a stunning pewter necklace with faux diamond accents was revealed.

The whole service was super fast (it took about 20 minutes in total) and the body art itself promises to last about two weeks, making it ideal for brides, special occasions and the like.

DIY Sock Bun

Thursday, November 8th, 2012

Yesterday was spent working on next week’s beauty column for The Tampa Bay Times and PrettyCity.com. I won’t ruin the surprise by spilling all the details, but suffice it to say that five unusual beauty tricks are the focus.

One of my go-to tricks is using a sock to create a super thick hair bun. Have you tried this?

It’s crazy simple. It takes literally seconds. And, it somehow makes your hair look like it was either A) professionally styled or B) painstakingly styled at home with tons of tools, time and products.

Nope, it’s just a simple sock, rolled up into a donut shape and placed atop your head.

So, I’m previewing the how-to from next week’s story for my blog post today. Not to worry, I didn’t ruin the surprise for you, there are four more fascinating tips still to come.

To create a chic, voluminous bun, snip the toe end off a sock that is a similar color to your locks (the thicker the sock, the larger the final bun will be). Next, put hair in a ponytail using a hair tie. Take the sock and roll it up into a donut shape and put the “sock donut” over the end of your hair. Roll the sock down the length of your ponytail towards your head, wrapping your hair around the sock as you get closer to the hair tie.  Once done, tuck extra ends, secure with a bobby pin and you’ve created a thick, gorgeous bun.

Trying New Trends (Pictures)

Thursday, November 1st, 2012

I despise posting pictures of myself which is why I do it so infrequently. However, I’m trying to be more brave about it as so many of you at PrettyCity events and parties have mentioned that you love to see personal pics.

That said, I snapped a few shots of this pretty and demure combination of trends yesterday. After we at PrettyCity.com ran a story here about collars being the new it thing, I wanted to try it but was afraid the look would feel too stuffy for me. So, I hedged my bets by picking up a super inexpensive collar shirt at TJ Maxx. (I think I paid about $20 for the blouse.) I loved the final look because, while it isn’t racy at all, there is something subtly sexy about this style. I paired mine with a black skirt, black tights and sky-high black heels, of course.

The makeup: Essie polish in “Licorice,” which is just as ebony as it sounds. Mirenesse Lip Bomb Glossy Lacquer #13, a very flattering nude gloss, EnvyDerm Growth Liquid Eyeliner in black and SmashBox BB Cream, natch!

The jewelry: Earrings from my husband’s jewelry collection, Brian Brundage Designs, the “Black Collection.”

Fall Fashion Steal from Kirna Zabete and Target

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2012

While I often work in downtown Chicago, living in an undecidedly un-Chicago ‘burb leaves me shopping obsessively online or, often, left to shop locally at a dizzying array of boutiques I like to call Target and TJ Maxx.

So you could basically say that Target’s designer collections are one of the few things that bring me joy when it comes to offerings in my area. Imagine my excitement when I discovered that, on September 9, Target is launching a fall collection with New York boutique Kirna Zabete.

The collection will start as low as $9.99 (think accessories) and go up in price to about $100. One great thing about living where I do, unlike Chicago, is that my local Target is highly unlikely to sell out quickly (if at all).

Here are some of my faves from Target’s blog, abullseyeview.com.

Top Beauty Fixes

Wednesday, June 13th, 2012

On paper, my life is perfect. But, in reality, mistakes, mix-ups and an occasional melee seem to be more common. So, when it comes to beauty, I’ve amassed a roster of beauty fixes sure to calm even the craziest cosmetic moments.

Compact S.O.S.

Life inside my purse must be pretty awful because, seemingly without fail, new compacts leap to certain death within days of being stashed in my favorite handbags. And while some miraculously escape their leaps unscathed, others still end up as just fragments of their former selves. After losing a few high-priced powder and blush compacts, I discovered a way to save the makeup within any compact that falls to pieces.

After the fall, open the compact and mash up the remaining pieces of powder, basically turning everything within the compact into a loose powder. Next, add approximately one teaspoon of 70% Isopropyl Alcohol, sold at many local drugstores. Finally, using a stiff makeup sponge or makeup brush, smooth out the top of the product, which has now become pliable thanks to the addition of the alcohol, and let the product dry for two hours after which it will be good as new. Whew, cosmetic crisis averted.

Lipstick Like New

Buy a lipstick in a shade you end up hating and it’s sure to last forever. But, plop down hard-earned cash for a lipstick hue you love and that lipstick is sure to break in half after a few uses. Fixing a broken lipstick is easy breezy with this simple trick. (Be sure to save the part that broke off.)

Throw on a pair of kitchen gloves and using an old fashioned match, gently heat up the underneath of the broken section of lipstick as well as the part of the lipstick that you will be reattaching  the tip to. Next, gently reattach the tip and store in the refrigerator for one hour.  In 60 minutes, your lipstick will be as good as new. In the future, be a doll and apply the lipstick a little less aggressively, extending the lipstick just a bit out of the tube before applying.

Manicure Maintenance

For every 10 bottles of nail polish that you wore once and never again, there’s that one go-to color that seems to complement your skin tone, suit your wardrobe and, of course, dries up way too quickly. While many a woman has added polish remover to a bottle of dried or almost empty polish — and you may even have seen a nail tech do this at less than reputable salons — polish remover is sure to damage, not save, your favorite bottle of lacquer.

Enter Seche Restore, a nail polish thinner that returns polishes to their former glory without downgrading the quality of the color inside or damaging the polish’s original consistency ($6.29 at drugstore.com). Seche Restore does not dull shine or color and, by adding just a few drops to your favorite polish with the included dropper, Seche Restore can save your favorite lacquer from an early death, nailing one more beauty breakdown without breaking the bank.

Obsessed with Orange

Monday, June 4th, 2012

I’m recently infatuated will all things orange, from dresses to lipstick and beyond. Of course, orange from head to toe is not a flattering look, so it’s best to opt for accents – like a tangerine clutch with chocolate-hued bermudas and a white tee or orange lips with a favorite LBD.

I’m so obsessed with Revlon’s Orange Flip lipstick and OPI’s Atomic Orange polish that I seem to find a way to pair it with every outfit of late. The key to pulling off orange lips, if you’re reticent, is to pair it with a flattering lip liner. To tone the orange down, opt for a nude liner, or turn up the heat, as I did below, by pairing orange lipstick with red liner. Even my husband was a fan of this combo.

Glamorous Lounging

Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

I know what you’re thinking… who has time to lounge? While you probably don’t spend afternoons lying on a chaise lounge in silk pajamas drinking champagne, there are undoubtedly moments – especially as summer approaches — that your only destination for the day is the backyard or, better yet, the pool. And what about lazy Sundays when your highest ambition is to walk out to the curb and grab the Times? Those are lounging days, my pretties.

I adore delicious days with nothing on the to-do list, but there’s no excuse for those days to be absent of style. Toss those torn sweats and rubber flip flops, let’s lounge glamorously.

If the Shoe Fits

Those who know me know that I seldom head out on the town without wearing alarmingly high heels.  But around the house, I prefer to take things down a notch. Frustrated with tacky slippers and cheap rubber flip flops, I’ve taken to wearing ballet flats as slippers.

My favorites include the soft leather Corso Como Festive ballet flats ($60), Gabriella Rocha’s Francesca ($37.50) and Bloch’s Luxury Ballet Flat ($115.50); all available online at Zappos.com. The benefits of wearing the ultra-comfortable ballet flat include protecting the bottoms of your feet from wear and tear (keep that pedicure working for you longer) and providing arch support. And, since ballet flats are bona-fide shoes, you can step out at a moment’s notice.

Dressed to Chill

House•dress/noun: A simple, usually washable, dress suitable for wearing while doing housework.

The definition of the housedress may seem archaic to the modern woman but the concept is timeless. Where is it written that while lounging you can’t be comfortable, chic and crease-free? Enter the concept of the housedress, a cozy, flattering, wash-and-wear dress that is perfect for everything from catching up on The Real Housewives to heading to the beach or taking the kids to the park.  Yup, the housedress has most certainly evolved (unlike that velour tracksuit).

Key elements to look for in a housedress include wearable fabric (it must be washable and it can’t wrinkle easily) and comfort (no tight belts or elastic straps – you’re lounging after all). I like the IRO Knit Mini Dress ($178 at Saks), the Stripe Flutter-Sleeve Knit Dress ($29.50 at Delias.com) and Tommy Hilfiger’s Striped Knit Shift ($59 at Macy’s).

My favorite housedress, currently hanging in my closet,  is cotton with a sequined skirt. Yes, sequins.

Lock Down Casual Style

Even I have to admit that lounging glamorously should not include an hour spent working on hair and makeup (such a shame)! Not to worry, I’ve got three quick hair styles that women with many hair types can easily master.

1)     The Side Bun: Sweep hair into a low ponytail secured behind the ear on one side of your head. Twist the ponytail into a bun (tight or messy depending on your preference) and secure with a bobby pin. Wear the side bun sleek or, for curly or wavy hair, leave locks loose and casual.

2)     Undone Side Braid: Flip your head over and run hands through hair to create volume. Next, pull hair to one side and braid – just the very bottom portion of hair – and secure with a small rubber band. Done.

3)     Half Updo: First, apply a dab of mouse to fine hair or opt for a quick spray of dry shampoo for oily hair. Part hair down the middle and separate just the sides of hair; twist both sides of hair and secure them at the crown of your head with a small clip or bobby pins leaving the rest of your locks flowing.

And while you’re “housework” may be gardening, babysitting, running errands or just relaxing, you’re sure to look effortlessly chic wherever you lounge.
