Three eye makeup tips that really work… promise!

Friday, March 29th, 2013

Follow typical beauty advice or the instructions included with your favorite cosmetics and you’re often left with results that are less than stellar. On the other hand, hang out with experts who’ve used these products again and again and you’ll discover unusual application tricks only whispered backstage and shared in industry circles. That’s why today I’ve rounded up three little-divulged beauty tricks that really work.

Apply false lashes like a real pro

Any woman who has applied false lashes on herself knows just how difficult it can be to fake long lashes without expert assistance. I used to struggle myself until a makeup artist shared this shockingly simple yet effective tip: apply lash glue to your own lash line rather than applying to the base of falsies as typically recommended.  I typically use an eyeliner brush to apply the glue to my lash line and I swear by Katy Perry eyelure lashes. Once applied, use a swab with the cotton removed to press the lashes into place. Always start by applying lashes from the outside corner of the lash line in.

Never throw away old mascara

There’s no reason to toss a used mascara wand in the trash, because cleaned mascara wands are ideal for a multitude of beauty uses. Clean old mascara applicators with eye makeup remover followed by skin cleanser and hot water. Once clean, and dry, these wands are ideal to use for taming wild brows and errant updo hairs. I use a mascara wand generously coated with hairspray to tame baby hairs around my ears and at the nape of my neck anytime I opt for an updo. Other wands are used to brush brows, and in a pinch, a touch of Vaseline on the tip of a recycled mascara wand is ideal for shaping brows.

Master liquid liner (finally)

Even women who are the most adept at applying their makeup can find liquid liner vexing. You need a steady hand to apply it well; it quickly goes from just right to overdone and it smears faster than you can say “bagel.” Have no fear; with these three tips you master applying liquid liner.

Use a felt-tip liner when possible. My standby is EnvyDerm’s liquid eyeliner ($36), which also happens to promote lash growth. You’ll be tempted to close your eyes to apply the liner; don’t. Keep your eyes open and apply liquid liner by creating three small dashes at the lash line. Next, connect the dashes and, finally, close your eyes for about 20 seconds to allow it to dry.

Finally, you can apply cat eyes without ending up looking like a tiger.

Top 5 Red Lipsticks

Friday, March 22nd, 2013

Red lipstick is my thing. And while it’s (thankfully) hip to wear red at this very moment, I’ve basically been addicted for years. When gloss became the lip decor du jour a few years back, I tried to conform. Naturally, I failed because while I agree that smoky eyes pair best with nude lips, I feel naked without a strong splash of color on my lips.

Best Drugstore Reds: Revlon Fire & Ice and Orange Flip, $8

Revlon makes the best drugstore brand reds, hands down. I’m hard pressed to choose between my two favorites: Revlon’s Super Lustrous lipstick in “Fire & Ice,” a long, lasting and classic hue that sells for about $8 at drugstores and Revlon’s “Orange Flip.” Paired with my favorite red lip liner, “Orange Flip” becomes that just right hue of orange-red that manages to flatter and brighten skin tone even on the dullest winter days.

Best Glossy Red: Girlactik Star Gloss in Ooh La La Red, $18

For those who aren’t yet red-y to sport a full-on matte red lipstick, a shimmering gloss can be the ideal way to add some color to your lips without going full force. Girlactik glosses are among the best glosses around with a touch of sparkle and enough tact to stay on your lips without bleeding outside the lip lines.

Best Designer Red: Dolce & Gabbana Lipstick in Attractive Monica and Italian Monica, $33

Head to Sephora and nab your choice of these most flattering reds inspired by Monica Bellucci, the Italian actress and Dolce & Gabbana muse. Available in hues created by MUA Pat McGrath, these creamy lipsticks are all pretty addictive but I particularly love Attractive Monica, a cool red and Italian Monica, a warm red.

Best Long Wear Red: Make Up For Ever AQUA ROUGE Waterproof Liquid Lip Color, $24

This two-step product is unbelievably long lasting and available in “red,” a fire-engine worthy hue whose boring name belies its fabulousness. Apply the matte hue first and then slick on the transparent top coat for extreme shine with absolutely no feathering. Get it at Sephora.

Best Eco-Chic Red: True Balance Red from Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics, $18

100% vegan and cruelty free, OCC Lip tar combines the longevity of a lipstick with the slickness of a gloss. Lip Tar goes on shiny but dries to a satin finish. Keep in mind, just the tiniest drop will do, plus the color lasts for hours.

Travel Tips for the Glam Girl-on-the-Go

Tuesday, February 19th, 2013

You’re well beyond Ziploc bags and hotel bar soap. This means, when you travel, you have all of your beauty necessities perfectly packed in a pretty little (see-through) cosmetic case, and all in TSA approved sizes. Right? Well, maybe not, but it’s certainly something to aspire to.

One of my best tips for the woman who wants to travel in style, and bring along quality toiletries for the ride, is to join a beauty subscription service like BirchBox. (Check out my review of several beauty subscription sites here.) While these services are billed as ways to sample new products, I find that they function best as a great way to keep you travel bag stocked with some of the latest and greatest grooming items on the market, typically in sizes approved for air travel and ideal for packing.

A recent BirchBox included a few items I tossed aside but more importantly, some perfect travel sized products that I kept. These items will join me on my next cross country jaunt: Oscar Blandi Dry Shampoo, Miracle Skin Transformer Microderm Cream, Kiehl’s Creme de Corps and a luminizer from The Balm.

Now, I just need two tickets to paradise.

Lashing Out: What to know about lash extensions

Tuesday, December 18th, 2012

I am a huge fan of lash extensions. And lash lengtheners. And really good mascara. Basically, I’m addicted to long, dark, thick lashes and, while I’ll do just about anything that promises to make my lashes more lush, I come back to lash extensions over and over because they look so d*mn good.

I’ve had my lashes done at dozens of spas and salons in several cities. There are certainly many, many talented estheticians or lash technicians offering lash extension but, when the itch for uber-long lashes hits, and I just have to scratch, I frequently go to Hair Base Salon in Chicago.

For the holidays, I decided to lash up and I’m so thrilled that I did. I thought I’d share a quick guide to what it’s really like to get lashes, how they feel, and how long they really last.

The Appointment

Don’t go to just any salon that offers lash extensions. Make sure the person you go to knows what they are doing. You can search the PrettyCity salon and spa database to find a lash extension expert near you or tweet me a @mrsbrundage with your city – I’ll help you find someone reputable.

Lash Levels

They aren’t really “levels” per say but you’ll find that the look, price, volume and even the heaviness of lashes varies depending on the type you get.

Synthetic lashes are the heaviest and least natural looking but most affordable. For example, Hair Base charges $150 for a full set of synthetic lashes.  Yes, they look less natural than other types of lashes but I don’t mind that. I’m not getting false lashes so that I can look like a natural beauty; I’m getting them to look like a bombshell.

Faux Minx: These lashes are imitation mink lashes. They are mid-priced and they are the type I am wearing in these photos. They cost a bit more than synthetic, less than real mink, but they are a little more natural looking, a little less heavy on the lashes and tend not to weigh down the lids as much as, IMO, the synthetic lashes do. I paid $200 for the set you see here.

Mink lashes: These are made of real mink, they are very light and natural looking. They cost more as well; a set like mine would run upwards of $250 at Hair Base.
I’ve tried all of the above. I like the faux mink because they look really noticeable yet natural and stay on longer, with proper care. The synthetic are a bit too fake for me and the mink doesn’t give me the va-va-voom I’m looking for, but all have pros and cons, and you should pick a type based on what you are trying to achieve.

With proper care, my lashes last 4 to 6 weeks or a bit more depending on my lifestyle.  For example, summer sun and fun tends to be harder on lashes.

The Procedure

One of the reasons that I go to Hair Base is because they are fast and meticulous. Applying a brand new full set normally takes about 45 minutes to one hour. Lower lashes are taped down (to avoid gluing upper lashes to lower lashes), eyes are closed and the technician goes to work individually bonding faux lashes to my own lashes. Of course, the application can be customized and I always ask for mine to be medium length and extra thick. (If you request more lashes than normal, expect to pay more.)

The Care

Care for lashes by absolutely not showering, bathing , steaming etc. for 24 hours post application. Don’t tug on your lashes or rub your eyes… ever. I love to apply mascara to my falsies even though the experts recommend not doing so. I am not wearing mascara in these pictures but it is very normal for me to do so.  Just be careful because the mascara you apply will likely be stuck on those lashes until they fall out so use mascara that is gentle and non-clumping, or even opt for clear mascara. I also use Latisse or a similar lash boosting product in conjunction with my extensions. I don’t know if this is technically a no-no, but I’ve never heard it encouraged. I’ve not had any problems doing both, and I feel that using a lash lengthener with faux lashes keeps my real lashes strong and full underneath.

Thanks to these faux lashes, I can swipe on a coat of red lipstick, powder my nose and go!

DIY Pampering Gifts + Free Printables

Friday, December 7th, 2012

You’ve been known to pay more for lettuce that’s already chopped and rinsed. And those pre-moistened Windex wipes may cost more, but they save you at least five seconds hunting down glass cleaner and paper towels. The truth is, saving time is often more important than saving money for busy women, but when it comes to holiday gift-giving, DIY presents are a unique way to show that you spent more than cash creating something worth sharing.

Bath Salts

Bath salts are the easiest make-at-home beauty item around. Simply mix one cup of Epsom salts, one cup of baking soda and your choice of essential oils to create a variety of bath salt options.  (You can also color bath salts with just a few drops of food coloring.)  Pretty packaging is the key to making this simply assembled gift dazzling. Save-on-crafts.com has a variety of chic packaging options, such as lattice glass potpourri jars ($8) and glass mason jars with metal lids ($1.50 each).  Complement your container with holiday tin tags that read “Joyeux Noel” (12 tags for $14) and small wood scoops (10 for $10.99, also at save-on-crafts.com). Or, log on to myownlabels.com and create customized labels, and even hang tags, to fit your jar of choice for about .35 cents each. (Full details on my DIY packaging and free printable labels pictured below at the end of this post.)

Foaming Bath

I’m a bubble bath addict but I find it difficult to find bubble baths with ingredients whose names I can pronounce. And, since I like to keep it simple and pure when it comes to products I use on my skin, this Foaming Vanilla-Honey Bath recipe from Real Simple magazine has become a favorite. Simply combine one cup of oil (almond, sunflower, or canola) with ½ cup of honey, ½ cup of mild liquid soap and one tablespoon of vanilla extract. For the soap, soapgoods.com sells Stephenson’s Liquid Organic Castile Base for just under $40 per gallon which yields 40 four oz. soap portions, or, head to Target where a 32 oz. bottle of Dr. Bronner’s Unscented Baby-Mild Pure Castile Soap for $15.29 will yield 8 portions of soap for $1.91 each. Pour the final product into two 8 oz. frosted glass apothecary bottles with corks, $2.99 each at save-on-crafts.com, or “upcycle” your own jar from a bottled beverage or condiment. Embellish with found objects, out of favor costume jewelry, paint, ribbon, etc.

Sugar Scrubs

Create custom sugar scrubs with a variety of essential oils and other ingredients most likely already in your pantry. Simply combine one cup of white or brown sugar, 1/2 cup of oil (such as  sesame, canola, grapeseed or, in a pinch, olive oil) and add three to five drops of your essential oil of choice. Mix all of the ingredients together and blend well.  Or, substitute the essential oils for two tablespoon of spices such as pumpkin pie spice or apple pie spice. Make a candy cane scrub by adding peppermint oil to the sugar and oil. Separate the scrub into two batches and add a dash of red food coloring to one batch. Next, layer the white and red scrubs in a clear glass or PET jar, creating a visual candy cane effect and a sweet holiday gift that’s one of a kind.

{I picked up the fabulous containers, pictured at top, ideal for bath salts and sugar scrubs, at Old Time Pottery. For just $1.49 per container, these glass jars are available with assorted lid colors and the lid actually comes with a small scoop, ideal for bath salts and scrubs, built into the lid as pictured above. I’d estimate each container holds about 10 to 12 oz. of product once filled. I embellished the jar with simple red ribbon and metal & enamel charms by Blue Moon Beads. I got them on clearance at Michael’s for less than $2. Finally, I designed some pretty, round tags that read, “primp, bathe and be pretty.” You can download the printable labels, 4 per page here —  bepretty.}

My Secret Weapon: Skin Fare by CoCoChi

Thursday, November 15th, 2012

Skin Fare

A relatively small list of organic ingredients contained within a cylindrical carton made from biodegradable, recycled paper combine in a multi-use product that I’ve been hoarding for the past several months.

Called Skin Fare, this multitasking skin salve, made by a North Carolina company called CoCoChi,  can be used on arms, face, hands, etc. and it’s crafted from 100%  USDA-certified organic ingredients.

I’ve been using mine as an eye makeup remover and as an eye cream and as a cuticle softener and as a dry skin stopper. It’s one of the few things worth packing for any trip or throwing in any bag. Get it for just under $10 at www.skinfare.com.

$5 Beauty Deals

Wednesday, May 9th, 2012

I don’t typically regard myself as a bargain hunter. I don’t clip coupons. I don’t patronize deal sites. In fact, I think of myself as a pay-more-if-you-can-save-an-ounce-of-time kinda girl. So, when my editor at the St. Pete Times challenged me to find $5 beauty products and services that I’d be willing to recommend for their $5 edition, I set out to test products that I could pick up for a fraction of my normal budget, without sacrificing quality.

A collection that won’t break the bank

e.l.f. Essential Super Glossy Lip Shine in Goddess

The Eyes Lips Face (e.l.f.) collection has been famously, and erroneously, called an off-label Nordstrom or Bloomingdale’s brand sold without the high-brow branding. And while this beauty urban legend is decidedly untrue, the sentiment is spot on: The e.l.f. cosmetic collection boasts department store-quality products at bargain-basement prices.

I recommend Super Glossy Lip Shine, which sells for $1 in a variety of hues, from Pink Kiss to Iced Latte. e.l.f.’s Essential Eyelid Primer is just $1 and pairs perfectly with Brightening Eye Color quads that sell for, you guessed it, a buck. No, there’s no department store connection, but there are hundreds of high-quality cosmetics, many priced at $1, $3 or $5, online at eyeslipsface.com.

Brush up on affordable skin care

Sephora Complexion Brush

You may have heard the buzz about the latest and greatest battery-powered facial cleansing brushes. Years ago, Clarisonic created this category single-handedly when they created their Sonic cleansing system, now named Clarisonic Classic ($195). Less pricey options abound, such as Olay’s Professional Pro-X Facial Cleansing Brush, sold for as little as $25 at local drugstores.

But this is the $5 issue, ladies, so Olay’s product is a whopping $20 over budget. Thankfully, a friend introduced me to a beauty secret of sorts, right on the shelves of your local Sephora. It’s the $5 Sephora Collection Face Complexion Brush, and it even comes in fuchsia. True, you power it with your own muscles, but similar to its battery-powered counterparts, this brush does an amazing job of exfoliating dead skin cells, leaving your skin all aglow.

Celebrity beauty bargains at Walmart

Skinnygirl Shimmer Lip Balm

The joy you derive from a Sunday night episode of Real Housewives of New Jersey or Bethenny Ever After may be priceless, but thankfully, you can primp like a reality star for less than $5.

Reality TV star Bethenny Frankel recently launched the Skinnygirl Face & Body Collection, a line of skin care, body care and cosmetics available at Walmart. Prices start at $4.97 and include items such as Shimmer Lip Balm and tinted lip balm for under five bucks.

Feel like pulling a Real Housewife diva act and going over budget? Splurge on the most expensive item in the collection, the Skinnygirl Gift Set Body Solutions Kit, including smoothing and firming body wash, smoothing and firming body lotion, and body shimmer for $15.97.

After all, aren’t budgets meant to be broken?

Don’t Sweat It! Makeup That Can Stand the Heat

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

If you’re one of those women who never wears a stitch of makeup and looks stunning regardless, no need to read on.

But if, like many of us, you’ve been known to wear lip gloss to the beach and mascara to the gym, I’ve rounded up the top tips and products to keep you looking oh-so-pretty even as temperatures heat up.

For Face

Intense heat calls for makeup that provides coverage, SPF and an uncanny ability not to run. All hail the tinted moisturizer, a fabulous beauty invention that’s especially essential as the weather heats up.

I swear by Physician’s Formula Healthy Wear SPF 50 Tinted Moisturizer because it serves up generous coverage and smooth application. Available at Ulta for $14.99  for 1 oz., this tinted moisturizer offers broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection paired with breathable coverage that conceals imperfections effortlessly.

Should you find yourself in a really hot spot, beware of powder touch-ups this season. Instead, opt for powder-coated blotting papers that reduce excess sebum and stamp out shine. I like Girlfriends BFF Blotting Papers ($6 at girlfriendsbff.com) which I discovered at  last year’s Beauty Sample Sale and Bobbi Brown Blotting Papers, $20 at Nordstrom.

For Eyes

During summer months, a smokey eye is bound to become a hot mess, so apply eye makeup with a light hand. Opt for a Waterproof Mascara and, if you must wear eyeliner, it should also be water proof. I prefer a natural eye during the hottest months of the year, think cream-based shadow in near nude shades of pink, peach and tan.

One of the best waterproof mascaras I’ve come across is BadGal Waterproof Mascara; get it for $19 at benefitcosmetics.com. In the drugstore, opt for Maybelline XXL Pro by EyeStudio Waterproof Volume Microfiber Mascara for about $7 at Walgreens.

Most importantly, you absolutely must protect those pretty peepers form the sun’s harsh rays. You’re never too young (or old) to get religious about using an eye cream with SPF. I use Sun Wrinkle Control Eye Contour Care SPF 30 from Clarins ($28 at Sephora). Promising to prevent lines and wrinkles, Sun Wrinkle Control Eye Contour Care is an oil-free eye treatment that protects the sensitive eye skin against UVA/UVB without irritating.

For Lips

While some experts recommend gloss on hot summer days, I say skip it in favor of a lip stain that is sure to last. Smashbox makes a legendary stain called Limitless Lip Stain & Color Seal Balm ($23 at Sephora) that’s available in a range of hues from berry, a raspberry, to guava, a bright orange, and beyond.  Limitless imparts a tint of color that lasts for hours, doesn’t feather and hydrates lips to boot.

With the right products, you’ll never have to let ‘em see your makeup feather, run, transfer or melt, no matter how hot the weather, or your workout, gets.

Bye, Bye Crow’s Feet

Wednesday, April 18th, 2012

Jenny McCarthy, via people.com, believes in "just a little bit" of Botox

Yes, you can fight fine lines and crow’s feet with a daily regimen designed to prevent and protect. Wrinkles and crow’s feet are the inevitable results of time, or are they?  Actually, environmental factors such as sun exposure and lifestyle choices, like smoking, are a primary cause of aging.

You can protect yourself by using a sunscreen daily. (Yes, even in the winter.)

In terms of treatment, Botox makes a big impact on crow’s feet. This is considered off-label use of the product and it’s important that you go to a doctor or nurse who absolutely knows what they are doing. The key is experience, the more injections your professional of choice has administered in this area, the better your results will be. And yes, I can personally endorse Botox as effective for combating crow’s feet. (Along with 90% of Hollywood, by my estimates.)

Concealing fine lines with makeup is tough,  if not impossible. Plus, one wrong move can worsen your under eye woes.  The last thing you want to do is spotlight fine lines by applying makeup that accentuates wrinkles.  The key here is to use a light application of a hydrating product; I swear by Being True’s Protective Illuminating Concealer (read about it here).

Also, avoiding mascara and liner at the lower lash can help make sure that no product gets caught in fine lines since darkness in this area will highlight wrinkles.

I believe in aging glamorously. And telling the truth. How about you?

The Best Powders

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

Cleopatra’s  was rumored to be crafted of crocodile excrements.  In ancient Japan, it was made of rice flour.   During the Italian Renaissance, it was crafted from arsenic. And while the ingredients in face powder have come a long way, baby, one thing hasn’t changed: powder has played a starring role in makeup bags for centuries. This week, after trying over 37 powders, I’ve rounded up the latest  and greatest powder offerings on the market, all tested and approved by me.

Best Anti-Aging Powder: Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation from Hourglass Cosmetics

Immaculate may be the word Hourglass chose to represent one of their newest products but “skeptical” was the word that came to mind as I read the product description. Available for $55 at hourglasscosmetics.com as well as Sephora, Barneys and other retailers, the product promised to “absorb oil, camouflage imperfections, and ensure a long-lasting flawless finish—without the need for touchups.” After using the product once,  I was cautiously optimistic. After several uses,  my new word for Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation is “hooked.” This product goes on flawlessly, stays matte for hours, and true to its promise, perfects the appearance of skin every moment along the way.

Best Powder for Blemish Prone Skin: Proactiv SheerFinish Mineral Pressed Foundation

Who knew that the company that is so good at eradicating imperfections could also help cover them up?  Enter Proactiv’s SheerFinish Mineral Pressed Foundation, available in 12 shades, as well as translucent. This compact powder is ideal for blemish-prone skin in need of covering redness, blemishes and birthmarks.  Get it for $25 at proactivcatalog.com.

Best Powder For Less Than $10: Black Opal Invisible Oil Blocking Powder

No matter your skin tone, Black Opal’s color-free Invisible Oil Blocking Powder does just what it promises, blends seamlessly into skin.  The oil-absorbing formula is hypoallergenic and suits all skin types. Plus, retailing for about nine bucks at places such as Wal-Mart and online at blackopalbeauty.com, this reliable powder is accessible and affordable. And no, this is not a new powder, but it’s fabulousness is news to me.

Best Two-In-One Product: Rain Cosmetics’ Dual Powder Foundation

Like many of today’s powder-foundation hybrids, Rain Cosmetics’ Dual Powder Foundation provides the coverage of a foundation with the matteness of a powder. What sets Rain apart is the ability to customize coverage from light to medium paired with an expansive range of shades from Touch of Ivory to Walnut Bronze. Oil and fragrance free, this fairly new collection (launched in 2008) has earned a long-lasting spot on my vanity. Get it for $32 at RainCosmetics.com.

Have you tried any of these powders?  What’s your favorite powder?
