Glamorous Greeting Cards

A friend recently emailed me apologizing for not sending a thank you note.  I quickly assured her that I don’t believe in thank you notes.  The words are appreciated, but the note is unnecessary. Birthday cards are similar; I give them because it’s expected but it frequently feels like a formality. Perhaps because I relish picking gifts for people; the addition of a card with some pre-written sentiment seems unnecessary. The gift itself says everything about how I feel, always picked out with love and enthusiasm… and never a gift card.

This all changed last week when, while hosting a BBA event at Co-op California in Edison Park,  I came across a collection of greeting cards that changed everything.

Pergamino is a stunning collection of greeting cards and stationary featuring cashmere-soft paper paired with gorgeously stylish illustrations and clever messages. I walked out of the boutique with a half a dozen cards, priced at about $4.99 each. (I showed great restraint by not snatching up the entire line.)  Now, I’m waiting patiently for a few friends’ birthdays, and, while I buy pretty fabulous gifts, these cards just may steal the show.

Something Sweet for Valentine’s Day

Wednesday, February 13th, 2013

Happy almost Valentine’s Day!

I know the term “love” should probably be reserved for the most important things in my life — think hubby, kids, family– so let’s just say that I really, really like completely adore these V-day inspired gifts.

#1 Aren’t these Marc by Marc Jacobs aviator glasses fab? On sale at TheOutnet.com for $76.

#2 I heart this adorable and completely affordable two finger arrow ring, just $38 from Rachel Roy.

#3 I already admitted I was a little obsessed with Alexander McQueen. This Cherry Suede Crystal Britannia Skull Box Clutch ($2,295) is like a work of art. I’m dreaming of my first art collection.

#4 Delfina Delettrez’s ruby, pearl & yellow gold lips ring ($938) is both delicate, dazzling and edgy.

#5  Because there’s no such thing as too much of a good thing, how about a pair of Alexander McQueen suede open toe pumps in nude? Get ‘em at www.luisaviaroma.com.

Wishing you lots of love!

DIY Pampering Gifts + Free Printables

Friday, December 7th, 2012

You’ve been known to pay more for lettuce that’s already chopped and rinsed. And those pre-moistened Windex wipes may cost more, but they save you at least five seconds hunting down glass cleaner and paper towels. The truth is, saving time is often more important than saving money for busy women, but when it comes to holiday gift-giving, DIY presents are a unique way to show that you spent more than cash creating something worth sharing.

Bath Salts

Bath salts are the easiest make-at-home beauty item around. Simply mix one cup of Epsom salts, one cup of baking soda and your choice of essential oils to create a variety of bath salt options.  (You can also color bath salts with just a few drops of food coloring.)  Pretty packaging is the key to making this simply assembled gift dazzling. Save-on-crafts.com has a variety of chic packaging options, such as lattice glass potpourri jars ($8) and glass mason jars with metal lids ($1.50 each).  Complement your container with holiday tin tags that read “Joyeux Noel” (12 tags for $14) and small wood scoops (10 for $10.99, also at save-on-crafts.com). Or, log on to myownlabels.com and create customized labels, and even hang tags, to fit your jar of choice for about .35 cents each. (Full details on my DIY packaging and free printable labels pictured below at the end of this post.)

Foaming Bath

I’m a bubble bath addict but I find it difficult to find bubble baths with ingredients whose names I can pronounce. And, since I like to keep it simple and pure when it comes to products I use on my skin, this Foaming Vanilla-Honey Bath recipe from Real Simple magazine has become a favorite. Simply combine one cup of oil (almond, sunflower, or canola) with ½ cup of honey, ½ cup of mild liquid soap and one tablespoon of vanilla extract. For the soap, soapgoods.com sells Stephenson’s Liquid Organic Castile Base for just under $40 per gallon which yields 40 four oz. soap portions, or, head to Target where a 32 oz. bottle of Dr. Bronner’s Unscented Baby-Mild Pure Castile Soap for $15.29 will yield 8 portions of soap for $1.91 each. Pour the final product into two 8 oz. frosted glass apothecary bottles with corks, $2.99 each at save-on-crafts.com, or “upcycle” your own jar from a bottled beverage or condiment. Embellish with found objects, out of favor costume jewelry, paint, ribbon, etc.

Sugar Scrubs

Create custom sugar scrubs with a variety of essential oils and other ingredients most likely already in your pantry. Simply combine one cup of white or brown sugar, 1/2 cup of oil (such as  sesame, canola, grapeseed or, in a pinch, olive oil) and add three to five drops of your essential oil of choice. Mix all of the ingredients together and blend well.  Or, substitute the essential oils for two tablespoon of spices such as pumpkin pie spice or apple pie spice. Make a candy cane scrub by adding peppermint oil to the sugar and oil. Separate the scrub into two batches and add a dash of red food coloring to one batch. Next, layer the white and red scrubs in a clear glass or PET jar, creating a visual candy cane effect and a sweet holiday gift that’s one of a kind.

{I picked up the fabulous containers, pictured at top, ideal for bath salts and sugar scrubs, at Old Time Pottery. For just $1.49 per container, these glass jars are available with assorted lid colors and the lid actually comes with a small scoop, ideal for bath salts and scrubs, built into the lid as pictured above. I’d estimate each container holds about 10 to 12 oz. of product once filled. I embellished the jar with simple red ribbon and metal & enamel charms by Blue Moon Beads. I got them on clearance at Michael’s for less than $2. Finally, I designed some pretty, round tags that read, “primp, bathe and be pretty.” You can download the printable labels, 4 per page here —  bepretty.}

The Bling Collection

Wednesday, November 21st, 2012

The Bling Collection lipstick, tweezers and eye lash curlers.

At PrettyCity.com’s Livebeautifully events this year I fell in love with a sparkling product line called The Bling Collection.

Upon first glance you may think my shameless obsession with sparkle led me to adore The Bling Collection, but, look past the jewels (all individually placed by hand) and it becomes apparent that it’s the product housed within these bedazzled cases that shines.

The Bling Collection’s ColorBlast Lipgloss ($32) is a paraben-free gloss replete with Vitamins A, C and E and housed in a shimmering case with an LED light and attached mirror.  Spotlight Nail Shine is a fast drying glossy nail polish with a jewel-encrusted lid that makes manis anything but mundane.  I also adore the Eye Lash Curler ($25) with soft lash pads to protect lashes from breakage.

Shop the collection online at blingcollectiononline.com or catch The Bling Collection in person at our Los Angeles Livebeautifully event on December 5.

Hey Santa, Make Mine Fabulous

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

Santa baby, be sure to include chic stocking stuffers and luxurious gifts under the tree this year. I don’t mean to be demanding but, I’ve been good for nearly 365 days since your last visit, so drugstore spa sets and massive cheap makeup kits just won’t cut it. Here are a few of my favorite things from upscale to f-r-e-e.

A Stylish Elf

Dear Santa, should you need help shopping for me, I suggest an amazing app that serves up easy to navigate searches from multiple, high end retailers and e-tailers for men, women, children and home. So, for example, if you’re thinking I deserve a new pair of nude boots (you’re so right), simply go to ShopStyle.com, type in “nude boots,” and Bam! you’re shopping Jimmy Choo in the buff from BlueFly, Sergio Rossi in nude way above the knee from Style Bop and more.

And the ShopStyle app takes your gift giving prowess, and my style, to a new level. While planning a recent trip, I was able to search for pieces I needed — trench coat, denim skirt, walking boots — mark certain items as favorites, sign up for Sales Alerts and even make purchases right from my iPhone. Surely, with all you have on your plate this season, Santa, mobile gifting is a must.

A few of my favorite things from ShopStyle

Must Have Makeup

Remember that aforementioned bulk makeup? While I totally appreciate the sentiment, Santa, a girl can only do so much with the good looks mother nature gave her. High quality grooming aids are a must.

Not to worry, I know just the place to shop for the makeup and tools of celebrity makeup artists on the cheap. Not even an elf could do it better than Crown Brush, a makeup and brush manufacturer that opens an online “Holiday Shoppe” this time of year. Log on to crownbrush.us get up to 70% off tools and products normally available only to professionals, top beauty brands and beauty artists.  I recommend the 10 Color Lip Palette for $8.99 and the 36 Color Smokey Eye Shadow Palette for $11.99 or a 10-piece professional Basic Brush with sable blend bristles for $29.99.

Smoke it Out 36 Color Shadow Palette

Make Mine Monogrammed

Nothing says “special” like a monogrammed gift. (Or, does nothing say “you’re stuck with this” like a monogrammed gift?) Either way, Santa, I promise not to even think of returning a pair of customizable shades from the Prada private collection ($325 at prada.com).

Choose from initials, numbers or favorite symbols — think hearts, stars, skulls — to decorate the temples of these glasses in a variety of hues from Prada. I’d be merry in a pair personalized with my initials on each side or, if you must, even “I ♥ SC.” It’s the least I can do to show my gratitude for delivering such a stylish gift, big guy.

Lorenzi Open Toe Crystal Pump; $3195 at Gregory's

It’s my  birthday, pretties! I am so excited to be alive, healthy and grateful for having an amazing family, career and friends.

So, I can’t think of a single thing that I need. But, if you insist on getting me a gift…

While in L.A. for our Beauty Bash at A La Mode Studio this past Tuesday, some of the PrettyCity ladies snapped a picture of these Gianmarco Lorenzi  shoes and sent them to me.  Best e-card I’ve ever gotten!

By the way, the price tag for these stunners is $3,195 at Gregory’s.

Here’s to ridiculously extravagant birthday gifts… and to being grateful for what you already have.

Freebie Friday: Glam Accessories Galore

Friday, August 12th, 2011

Meet one of my favorite online jewelry and accessory destinations, Spring Street. When Spring Street approached me with pictures of one of their fab new collections, I made a case for giving me a set to give to one of you, my pretties. (Always thinking of ya!) And what can I say, I la-la-love jewelry. I simply can’t get enough, can you?

One of our PrettyCity staffers is always jingling about the office. I think there’s something so charming about stacks of bangles piled up on a bare wrist, and the gentle chime they tend to exude.

Bangles from SpringStreetDesign.com

From charming to chic; three things I plan to embrace this fall are feathers, lace and pieces inspired by global fashion.

A Few of Spring Street's Must Have Earrings

To know me is to know that I don’t leave the house without a cocktail ring. And a manicure. Life is simply too short and sparkle makes me smile.

Cocktail Rings Sure to Make You Happy, too!

And the pièce de résistance is this stunning three-piece set called “Spice Market,” a transitional collection that pairs perfectly with flirty summer sundresses before transitioning to fall seamlessly and complementing camel coats, cashmere sweaters and riding boots.

Best of all, just leave a comment below and this weekend I’ll pick one winner of the three-piece set, courtesy of springstreetdesign.com!

Retail Prices: $45 for beaded necklace, $18 for drop earrings, $30 for stretch bracelet

Customizable Prada Sunglasses

I got married when I was 25 which, in retrospect, seems quite young.  I’ll be 38 this August, which makes my young marriage nearly 13 years old. Lucky 13.

My secrets to a happy marriage? Put your husband first (before work, girlfriends, even siblings).  Work on your marriage like you do on your career or your abs —  think dedication, creativity and flexibility.

And always do little things to show your mate how much you adore him.

That’s why I headed to prada.com and ordered a pair of customizable shades from the Prada private collection ($325).  Mine are black and adorned with  “I <3 BB.”  I like to think of it as a love letter of the most stylish sort.

The Top 5 Ways to get V-day Ready

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

Valentine’s Day is just days away, so I’ve rounded up the top 5 ways to show yourself – and him – a little love.

1001 Ways to be Romantic

1001 Ways To Be Romantic

This bestselling book, authored by Gregory J.P. Godek, serves up both practical and fanciful advice for becoming “more romantic than ever.”

Essential advice for men including  “never, never, never” joke about her PMS, call  your wife your “old lady” or ask about dinner before saying “I love you,” marries sensible  advice for women such as  “never, never, never” return his car with an empty gas tank or withhold sex as punishment.

But the best parts of this book are out-of-the box tips and tricks to find or restore romance in your relationships.  Daily checklists serve up ways to be more romantic every day, while chapters on kissing, writing love notes and even erotica are sure to educate even the most seasoned romantics. Get the book at Borders.com.

Love You 2011

Love You

It’s been said that you can’t find love until you love yourself. That’s why, each February, National  Heart Month, PrettyCity.com hosts “Love You,” a month long campaign, held in partnership with The Heart Truth, that encourages women to take care of their own well-being.

Spas and salons across the nation offer their services at deeply discounted rates for the entire month of February, to encourage consumers to show themselves a little love.  Browse the ah-mazing offers at spas nationally at www.prettycity.com/love.

Does lipstick captivate him?

Kiss your Gloss Goodbye

I’ve been touting lipstick as the new beauty trend you have to try, and now it seems, lipstick may also be the key to his heart. Men are most drawn to a woman’s lips over any other facial features, the Daily Mail reported in a story about research by U.K.’s Manchester University. The study goes on to claim that pink lipstick will hold his attention for 6.7 seconds while red will keep his eyes on you for 7.3 seconds.

I’ve come up with my own, completely un-scientific, list of the top 5 lipsticks to help get, or keep, your guy:

#1 Alarm, a fire-engine red, from Maybelline.
#2 Ho Ho Ho, a crisp crimson, from Michael Marcus.
#3 Wild Fire, a bright orangey-red, from Estee Lauder.
#4 Porn Star, a shocking pink, from Mattese.
#5 Sekichiku, a shimmering pink, by Sensai.

Conversation Hearts; image courtesy of Branders.com

 Creative Cuisine

You don’t have to blow the bank to impress your lov-ah this V-day. Head to your local craft store and pick up candy conversation hearts and Wilton’s FoodWriter pens to craft your own edible love notes.

You can create custom messages on the back-side of the conversation hearts, and, you can even remove the pre-printed message in the front with a razor blade to create a one-of-a-kind conversation from the heart.

Delizioso Skincare

No-Calorie Treats

What would Valentine’s Day be without bath and body products that leave you as sweetly scented as a fresh baked cupcake?

Delizioso Skincare, a boutique brand of organic products, has one of the most deliciously scented Body Washes I’ve ever encountered in their White Chocolate & Berries Wash, Soap and Cream ($32 for the set at deliziososkincare.com). Other favorites include Sandalwood Body Butter from Mount Romance ($21.95 at mtromanceusa.com), ideal for giving him a massage. And, for you, Temptations Bath n’ Body  hand-crafted Cherry Vanilla collection, available on craft site, esty.com.

You were already perfect, but now you’re even love-lier.
