The Rules of Glamour

Don’t wear red and pink together.

And redheads should never wear red.

Oh, and throw out your grandma’s rule book, because yesterday’s don’ts are today’s dos.

Do wear red and pink, in fact color blocking is all the rage for fall.  And redheads should wear red and any other color they look this good in.

Here’s my rule: wear what you want so long as you feel amazing in it. Confidence has always been, and always will be, glamorous.

The Iconic Style of Mom

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

People have always thought my Mom was glamorous. As a child, it wasn’t uncommon for neighbors to tell me that my Mom was gorgeous.  As a teenager, this infuriated me; as an adult, it inspired me.

Looking back, so many of the hallmarks of Mom’s style were true classics: an immaculately applied red lip, perfectly manicured nails, Mom’s effortless dark curls, her wedges (long before the word was being flung around) and simple, knit dresses that flattered her frame and allowed her to jet from soccer practice to ballet — kids in tow — without a crease in site. Oh, and my Mom could also rock a bikini, even after four kids.

The true testament to Mom’s great style and beauty is that so many of her secrets are actually staples that even today, prove timeless.

Mom's Modern Look Book

Great Hair and Hands

My mom has never met a Vitamin E capsule that she couldn’t put to work. Back in the day, Mom would break open a capsule and use it to hydrate her cuticles before running still slick hands through her curly hair. Yup, Mom was onto the oil trend before MoroccanOil and argan oil products were even a glimmer in someone’s eyes.

Fast forward to 2011 and Mom’s classic moisturizer has been modernized. Lierac’s Sensorielle Multi-Use Oil for Face, Body & Hair serves up 24-hour hydration that nourishes with botanical oils including argan, hazelnut, sweet almond and grape seed. Get it for $34 at lierac-usa.com.

Red Lips & Tips

Mom intuitively knew that nothing pulls together a look like a splash of red.   That’s why perfectly lacquered nails and vivid red lips were part of her go-to look.  (She may also have known that nothing counteracts the sleep-deprivation caused by caring for a family of six like a pop of crimson.)

Of course, in true mama-style, Mom stayed loyal to her favorite red polish and lipstick for years, and years, and years.  Until they, whomever they were, stopped making it. Literally.  And while the teenager me would have said that Mom was in a rut, as an adult I understand that certain things, like a shade of lipstick that flatters perfectly, don’t get old. And being trendy isn’t always stylish.

Mom’s modern trick for sticking to what flatters even when trends change? ThreeCustom.com, a company that specializes in producing discontinued shades on demand, in individual batches, for lips, cheeks and eyes.

Haute Mama

Much like the modern woman, Mom had to do quite a juggling act to keep life in balance and still look beautiful. She managed to look flawless thanks to timeless dress shapes, usually knits, and the classic wedge shoe; ideal for lending elegant height without hindering Mom’s ability to run from the PTA to the playground.

Mom would no doubt argue that quality fabric, fluid draping and fabulous accessories are always on trend. I see Mom’s classic choices even today in an of-the-moment Mark & James by Badgley Mischka Wedge, $255 at Zappos.com, and ASOS knitted dress featuring a scoop neckline and short sleeves with a fitted ribbed waist and full skirt, $89.65 at asos.com

And while Mom’s timeless looks are still being emulated, her style legacy is one of a kind.

It’s just another Mani Monday, I wish it were Sunday…

Monday, January 17th, 2011

Because Sunday night I was watching the Golden Globes while enjoying a chocolate martini and admiring my fresh “Lady Godiva” manicure, courtesy of Essie.

Essie's "Lady Godiva"

The martini was inspired the manicure, of course. I love the rich chocolate hue of this ultra-shiny lacquer. And the color seems to complement my winter wardrobe perfectly.

Chocolate martinis are oh-so-easy to make; the key is to enjoy just one. Simply combine one ounce of Godiva Original Liqueur with 1/4 ounce Ciroc and blend with 2.5 ounces of skim milk. The rim is dressed with a blend of caramel and brown sugar.  (This makes a martini that is admittedly a bit weak; if you want to grow hair on your chest, by all means add more liquor.)

I know there are far too many places to turn for Golden Globe recaps, but I couldn’t resist sharing my own best and worst list in the hopes that you’ll share yours, too.

Worst hair: Scarlett Johansson

Most grown up: Piper Perabo  (No more dancing on bars for her!)

Most well-preserved: Kyra Sedgwick (Who says Bacon is bad for you?)

Most Heinous Dress: Tilda Swinton (Runner up: Julianne Moore)

Most Enviable Genes:  Halle Berry

Sleekest Pony: Jennifer Lopez  (There is not a hair out of place on this woman.)

Prettiest Platinum Blonde: Emma Stone (Her colourist gets an Easy A.)

Glam Bun (and bod): Demi Moore

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

Remember a few weeks back when I tried to convince you (here) that buns are oh-so-glamorous?

Well, just in case you’re still on the fence, I thought I’d share these gorgeous pictures of Demi Moore at Tuesday night’s “No Strings Attached” premiere.

I have the utmost respect for Demi; mostly because I love that she’s turned the tables on the cliché 50-year-old man with his 25-year-old trophy wife. (Demi’s actually 48 and Ashton is 32.)

Well played, Demi. The only thing hotter than her bun is that body, of course. I’m praying that in 20 years, I look half as good.

Resolve to be Glamorous

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

Yesterday’s post had me thinking of 2011 and what it will bring. It seemed only natural to make a list.

I know some women have “30 before 30” lists. That ship has sailed.

And don’t even hint at a “40 before 40” list. I will throw down.

Besides, I’m not a wait-‘til-the-end-of-a-decade kind of girl. When I want something, I want it yesterday. So for 2011, I’ve come up with a list of things I want to do constantly.   Because life is way too short to wait until next year to get everything you want.

The 2010 Chicago Beauty Sample Sale

Party.  Whether it’s big beauty bash, an intimate dinner party, an impromptu celebration for my kids and their friends, a girls’ night in or even a romantic dinner a deux, for me 2011 is going to be a year full of weekly celebrations.

What will you create this year?

Create.  I love to create but life gets too hectic and it’s just easier to opt for the tried and true instead of risking the unknown. This year, I’m pledging to pour my heart and soul into creating something new every week. And promising to enjoy the act of creating even when the results are less than perfect.

Perfect. And speaking of perfect, why not do everything better? Even the things I’m already really damned good at. Especially the things I don’t think I know how to do better. Perfect myself weekly, daily, constantly.  Once I’ve perfected something, I’ll no doubt discover that there’s even more room to grow.

Risk. Go out on a limb. Fail. Try again. Be risqué.  Obey Eleanor Roosevelt, “Do one thing every day that scares you.”

What will every second of every minute of 2011 bring you?

Glam Mamas: Claudia Schiffer Makes Mommy Glam Accessible

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

Pictures of  40 year old Claudia Schiffer, mother of three,  running to pick up her kids at school  frequently land in my inbox thanks to our celebrity photo service, PRphotos.com,  and I’m always impressed that she looks so chic even while doing the ordinary task of picking up her children.

And it’s not as if her style isn’t accessible, think dark sunglasses, great hair, statement bags —  typically oversized as any mom can understand — and classic, well-fitting pants and tops. A few go-to outfits like this, as I mentioned here, are all any mom, no matter how busy, needs to look glamorous every day.

Beauty and Style Blogs to be Thankful For

It’s been said that smart people know that they still have much to learn. And so, while each week I dish about beauty and style here, I get by with a little help from my friends. No, not the kind of friends that I share cocktails with but bloggin’ beauties that I often enjoy over a cup of steaming hot coffee as I start my day.

Glamour in No Time

Are You Running Out of Time to Look Pretty?

Typically, I’m out of time, which is why finding “me time” is often a late night indulgence. The other night, in need of some mindless me time, I tuned in to an after-hours re-run of Keeping Up with the Kardashians on E!  Needless to say, gratuitous entertainment abounded.

I watched enviously as Kim Kardashian rushed to fit in an hour of shopping before her 5 p.m. hair and makeup appointment (all in preparation for an 8 p.m. birthday party), while frequently lamenting the lack of time she has for herself. And while I think Kim is a natural beauty, when you have three hours for hair and makeup – not to mention professional help – isn’t it easy to look stunning?

But how about the rest of us, who are forced to get gorgeous with significantly fewer resources? I often have 15 minutes to get ready, with a two year old pulling on my dress all the while. And yet I do manage to pull it off thanks to a simple beauty mantra I call “Glamour in no time.”

Here’s how you too can look dash-ing in just minutes…

Classic Makeup (as seen in Nordstrom's fall ad campaign) can be quick!

Make Up Your Routine

The key to looking great in no time is having a go-to makeup routine that you can turn to in a pinch. When time is of the essence, experimenting with your makeup is not an option.

I have several go-to looks that I call upon when I need to get ready fast, and I’ve frequently garnered rave reviews for my ability to go from freshly showered to hair, makeup, and outfit in place in 15 minutes or less.

I always start with a quick and easy application of tinted moisturizer which protects, treats and hydrates my complexion while covering minor skin imperfections. I’m currently using a custom cocktail of Olay’s Total Effects Daily UV Moisturizer + Touch of Foundation mixed with Physician’s Formula Healthy Wear (both were recently featured in our “Best Tinted Moisturizers” story here).

Then, a quick slick of red lipstick and lip liner (done correctly, there’s just something about red lips that screams “polished”) and a swipe of Julie Hewitt’s Shimmy on Lids ($22 at juliehewett.net) and I’m good to go.

Finally, I coax my long curly hair into a chic un-done chignon or high ponytail. All the better to show off the precious minutes I just invested in looking pretty.

Runway Inspiration for a Real Life Fall "Uniform"

Dress the Part

Women, especially others Moms,  have complimented my style and shared that they feel they don’t have the time to look great. And while I appreciate the kudos, I always throw some tough love their way by saying, “Don’t make excuses, you do have the time!”

I firmly believe that it takes less time to slip into a dress and heels or skinny jeans, a long, classic cardigan (thank you, Tory Burch, for adding sparkle to this one) and boots as it does to work your way into sweats, sneakers and a T-shirt. The secret is to hang several outfits that are ready to wear in your closet. Think of it as the busy woman’s version of Prêt-à-Porter.

This time of year, my uniform is typically a simple black dress paired with boots and some generously sized costume jewelry.  And I hoard purses,  from metallic messenger bags to vividly hued clutches that lend color to any look.  After all, you may have just minutes to get dressed, but the impression made by taking pride in how you look is oh-so-long lasting.

What do you think? Is looking pretty a task you avoid or embrace?
