Travel Tips for the Glam Girl-on-the-Go

Tuesday, February 19th, 2013

You’re well beyond Ziploc bags and hotel bar soap. This means, when you travel, you have all of your beauty necessities perfectly packed in a pretty little (see-through) cosmetic case, and all in TSA approved sizes. Right? Well, maybe not, but it’s certainly something to aspire to.

One of my best tips for the woman who wants to travel in style, and bring along quality toiletries for the ride, is to join a beauty subscription service like BirchBox. (Check out my review of several beauty subscription sites here.) While these services are billed as ways to sample new products, I find that they function best as a great way to keep you travel bag stocked with some of the latest and greatest grooming items on the market, typically in sizes approved for air travel and ideal for packing.

A recent BirchBox included a few items I tossed aside but more importantly, some perfect travel sized products that I kept. These items will join me on my next cross country jaunt: Oscar Blandi Dry Shampoo, Miracle Skin Transformer Microderm Cream, Kiehl’s Creme de Corps and a luminizer from The Balm.

Now, I just need two tickets to paradise.

Paradise Mist Spa at KeyLime Cove Review

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

Paradise Mist Spa at KeyLime Cove

On a typical spring day in Chicago (read cold and overcast), I grabbed the kids and hubby and headed North of Chicago, just miles from Six Flags Great America, to Paradise Mist Spa at KeyLime Cove, a five-star spa housed within a mind-blowing resort and indoor water park.

We arrived in Gurnee to indulge in a two night break at KeyLime Cove Resort. The kids were, clearly, over the moon at the thought of spending two nights and three days splashing in KeyLime Cove’s wave pool, paddling through the warm waters of the lazy river and navigating adventurous indoor slides and rides.

But what they didn’t know was that I too was ecstatic at the thought of spending quiet afternoons within the sea-green walls of Paradise Mist Spa at KeyLime Cove, an unexpectedly world-class spa that boasts services like the Six Layer Deep Sea Custom Facial, Lava Shell Massage, pedicures, manicures, waxing and more in an upscale atmosphere that’s, frankly, a surprise find amongst KeyLime Cove’s less serene — but more splashy — offerings.

Upon entering KeyLime Cove, one is instantly greeted by the sights and sounds of a tropical getaway. And while the Resort has seemingly spared no expense in making guests feel as if they are in the Florida Keys, this is no low key vacation destination.

KeyLime Cove is literally packed with activities from the indoor water park to the RipTide Reef Arcade, Leapin’ Lizards artistic adventure spot, Pinki’s Pet Palace, and a brand new, open-air kids’ spa, called The Enchanted Lagoon Kids Spa, just steps from the indoor water park. (Yes, my three year old now knows firsthand why mommy — and daddy — loves pedicures.) Guest rooms are clean and spacious, replete with flat screen TVs, refrigerators, coffee makers and high-speed Internet access.

Amazingly, all of that adrenaline melts away as one steps into the tranquil retreat that is Paradise Mist Spa. I immediately began booking spa services for my husband and I (we’re both spa connoisseurs of sorts). He would enjoy a Deep Tissue Massage, Six Layer Deep Sea Custom Facial and Captain Dave’s Manicure and Pedicure while I took the kids to KeyLime Cove’s  65,000 square foot “Lost Paradise” Water park. Then, my favorite part, we’d switch spots and I’d head to Paradise Mist Spa for a muscle-melting massage, skin-smoothing facial and oh-so-pretty pedicure of my own.

Today’s Glamour Every Day Assignment: Get a Stylist

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

In Hollywood, everyone has one. But in the real world, most of us are left to fend for ourselves, forced to make uneducated style choices like how to wear ruffles without looking like a pirate and what kind of open toe shoes we can sport with socks.

To add insult to injury, there’s no one to help us create a library of cocktail party looks to choose from in a pinch (accessories, shoes and all) or to email us a customized packing list for our next tropical vacation. Or is there?

You may never see Rachel Zoe any closer than the distance from your futon to your flat screen but today, dolls, you too can benefit from a personal closet manager and fashion assistant to help categorize your clothes, keep track of outfits you’ve worn and when you wore them (lest you be caught on the concrete runway wearing the same thing twice) and even help create mood boards and inspirations for outfits you’re putting together. It’s all possible thanks to an iPod and iPhone app called Stylebook ($3.99 at stylebookapp.com).

The Stylebook App Interface

In search of great virtual style, I also tested out other virtual stylists including mvm.com, My Virtual Model, and istylista.com, an online personal shopping service founded by stylist Chantelle Znideric, but Stylebook emerged as a clear favorite.

Using the apps built in camera, I’m able to photograph my own clothes, bag, shoes and accessories. I can assemble looks on the fly by viewing a preview of my closet, and I can even create shopping lists for items still missing in my wardrobe. Individual pieces can be layered and resized to create virtual look books. And if I’m still not sure that any one look is going to wow critics (or co-workers), I can share looks with others via email to garner feedback or suggestions.

And while the Stylebook app can help with a variety of virtual wardrobe needs, some basic fashion sense is required to get started so I’ve rounded up a few on-trend tips to ensure that your virtual style is virtually perfect.

Three:  The most items in the same color to wear together.

If the shoe fits… build an outfit around it. Do make a standout pair of heels the foundation for a number of go-to looks.

Zero: The number of times you should coordinate your shirt with your shoes.

Mix it up: Do pair high end pieces with affordable staples form H & M, Zara, Forever 21 and the like.

More is more: When it comes to accessories, minimalism is so last year. Feel free to pile on necklaces, bangles and the like.

Have you tried Stylebook to create your own look book?

Make Mine a Minx

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

I’ve tried the No Chip Mani (and loved it) and while the appeal of a manicure that always looks fabulous is unmistakable, testing polish hues and mani trends is all part of the job.  So this week, I returned to the beauty trenches to test drive the Minx Mani, a manicure that calls upon a flexible film applied through heat and pressure.

Photo from MinxNails.com

Minx doesn’t smudge or chip and some argue that it’s environmentally friendly since no chemicals need be used for removal. Just apply warm water or heat and these puppies peel right off.  Similar to the No Chip Mani, nails that have been Minxed require no drying time; a small detail that I simply adore. Plus, these babies can withstand just about anything from doing dishes to taking a dip in the pool, something I can’t say for traditional manis as mine so often chip and peel.

Photo from MinxNails.com

My Minx manicure began with all the traditional mani trappings minus the oils and lotions: cuticles trimmed, nails filed, hands washed, it was time to select my “design” of choice. I opted for a sleek and chic chrome that was very modern, and impossible to miss.

Photo from MinxNails.com

My nail tech swiped my nails with alcohol before heating up each Minx film under a heat lamp and lining each one up perfectly with my nail bed before applying. Using light pressure, the film is bonded to the nail and then a glass nail file is used to shape the edges and remove excess. The entire manicure took about 30 minutes.

Photo from MinxNails.com

While some salons and spas say that Minx lasts up to 10 days,  I did see some lifting at the edges on the fourth day.  A quick shot of heat from my blow dryer fixed that; I simply heated my nails with a fast blow and applied pressure to smooth any errant edges back down.

To me, Minx nails are like limo shoes —  they may not be the most practical option but boy do they make a statement. Minx can even be applied to artificial nails including acrylics and gels and is available in over 100 to-die- for designs.

Have you been Minxed? Which design is your favorite?

Beauty shortcuts

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

For those times when getting ready for your spotlight moment, be it at the grocery store or the office, requires a stack of ingenuity and a shard of time, I’ve rounded up some of my favorite beauty shortcuts.

Down with dirty hair

Rene Furterer‘s Naturia Dry Shampoo

Unless you’re my younger sister (born with perfectly thick, shiny locks with just a hint of wave) having a good hair day is a skill that requires precision. Hair must be clean, but not too clean, with just the right amount of product, but not too much product or it turns greasy.  Oh, and Jupiter must align with Mars.

So, less-than-perfect hair is the modern woman’s far too constant companion.  We’re all in the same boat, dolls but in style, as in life, what sets winners apart is how they deal with such adversity. Pulling hair into a messy ponytail, ends sticking out like soiled spikes, is not the answer. Whoever first called this undone look “chic” clearly did not imagine the minions sporting disheveled ‘dos instead of actually shampooing.

When time constraints leave you with a dirty ‘do or an attempt at great hair turns greasy, Dry Shampoo is a must; absorbing excess oil and product while increasing volume at the roots.  (Check out PC’s best and worst dry shampoo list here.)  I like to think of it as a quick fix that is considerably more appealing than unkempt locks.

Nailing well-manicured hands

Zoya Color Lock System

Chipped nail polish is an absolute style No-No. You may love this season’s darkest hues on your hands but if you aren’t committed to maintaining the look, skip the polish and ask your favorite nail salon for a Hot Cream Manicure instead.  After a traditional manicure and the application of a deeply nourishing moisturizer, nails are buffed to a high shine that looks classic and lasts.

Don’t waste your hard earned dough on French Manicure kits that claim to be “easy.” It’s only easy for the professionals. I recently tried a not-to-be named French Manicure Pen. After perfectly applying polish to my left hand (I’m right handed) I thought I’d hit the grooming jackpot. Needless to say, using my other hand to apply French tips was a grooming disaster. 30 minutes and $8 wasted dollars later, I wished I’d gone to a professional.

Do invest top dollar in an effective top coat to keep professionally applied polish from chipping and do apply it daily. (Check out PC’s best and worst quick dry top coat list here.)

Makeup on the go

Nars the Multiple in Orgasm

With 5 minutes or less, this final beauty shortcut can take you from gloomy to glowing. Everyone from multi-tasking mommas to career mavens will benefit from a splash of color. After all, expertly applied makeup is the reason celebrities so often look picture perfect.

Grab an all-in-one makeup stick such as Nars The Multiple, and add all over color in a matter of seconds. The Multiple is a multi-purpose makeup stick for eyes, cheeks and lips ($38 at Narscosmetics.com). The cream to powder formula blends easily adding highlights and contour from lips to lids. Nars’ newest shade, Orgasm, satisfies many skin tones with its peachy pink shimmer.

Finish up with a quick application of mascara and in less time than it takes to change a diaper or catch a cab, you too can look gorgeous on the go.

Glam Weddings: Wine Country Romance

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Recently I rounded up the boys  — big  one and small ones — for the wedding of my good friend and PrettyCity staffer Johanna Engel Grange at The Carneros Inn Napa.  After one very long flight (true any time you travel with a two year old) we arrived in San Francisco and traveled by car to Wine Country.

The Farm at Carneros Inn

And that’s where the trip became magical… and oh-so-glamorous. We checked in to an expansive “home” at The Carneros Inn with 2,400 square feet of indoor space and 1,400 square feet of outdoor space including an upper deck. That evening, little ones in bed, my husband and I enjoyed al fresco dining and massages on the upper deck in a blissfully humidity-free climate. Ahh-mazing!

Perched atop acre after acre of apple orchards and grape vines, The Carneros Inn, in the Carneros appellation, draws modern inspiration from the rustic barns that likely once graced this farmland.  Pastoral meets luxe with hilltop pools, a top-notch spa (my esthetician divulged that Rachel McAdams had stayed — and stunned — at the Inn recently) and staff that seem to descend from nowhere the moment your heart even begins to desire anything.

The Downstairs Deck at our Carneros Inn "Home"

And since my friend is clearly fabulous (you can check out her chic ramblings daily here), the fabulous wedding of the century was sure to follow. Boy, did it.  Inspired by her non-traditional yet oh-so-chic shindig (Wedding cake? Too traditional.  Bouquet Toss? As if.), I asked the new Mrs. Grange to share the secrets of her glamorous wine country wedding for those of you getting married soon… or just someday.

Why Napa?

The French Laundry

“We are both huge fans of great food and great wine. Napa has both! It’s one of the only areas with several Michelin star restaurants including the ever famous French Laundry. We also wanted to find a domestic destination that provided a gorgeous backdrop but was still accessible for our closest friends and families.”

Cake Toppers waiting to be customized from Goosegrease on Etsy.com

Loved the cupcake bobble heads;  where did you get them?

“I loved them, too! Etsy.com was my go-to resource. Not only can you get loads of creative inspiration but you are supporting local artists. I knew I wanted some sort of topper so I searched “wedding decoration” and stumbled upon them. They are made of wood and all custom. I sent in a picture of the two of us and she asked me questions about our wedding day outfits and replicated the bobble heads to look exactly like us. Eye color, hair and all.”

Daisy + Lime Green Fall in Love

The lime green and daisy yellow colors were striking. Where’d you find the decor and what inspired you?

“You always hear interior decorators say that when designing a room, pick a focal point and build around it! For me, it was my wedding shoes. I found these satin, lime green stilettos and literally, died. I wanted to break away from tradition and vibrant wedding shoes are all over the blogs I researched such as 100 Layer Cake, Green Wedding Shoes and Style Me Pretty. Then it was back to Etsy for DIY tissue poms, candy tables, place cards and more. I really had a blast planning it and he was very involved, too which made it fun. I wanted Vintage meets Anthropologie. It also helps when you have the perfect canvas to begin with and the Carneros Inn is dynamite.”

Nina Electra 4" D'Orsay Stilettos in Apple Green

The lime green heels you wore were fantastic and unexpected.  What other details made your day unique?

“I have to find another occasion to wear these gems. They were so fun to wear. And since we were going with a green and yellow theme, I enjoyed the little accents from designing a candy bar for our guests as take home favors to our place cards which were granny smith apples with guest names pinned on the apple to picking our florals. I even found vintage Napa map cufflinks for Jack to wear on the wedding day; courtesy of Etsy again. One particular part I enjoyed was shopping for the hotel guest’s welcome bags. We wanted to say thank you for supporting us but do it in a way that represented the valley so we scoured stores for mini cheeses, crackers, splits and more. Shopping for mini anything is always fun.”

The Life of the Party

The champagne cupcakes were amazing! How did you discover them?

“Truth be told I could eat cupcakes everyday and am a huge fan of Sprinkles but we couldn’t get them to Napa so our cupcake vendor had a lot to live up to. Enter Sift Cupcakes. A local favorite and a preferred vendor of our destination, the Carneros Inn. It was taxing but we did two taste tests and the champagne cupcakes were my favorite. After all, it is wine country and who doesn’t like a little bubbly?”

The Blushing Bride

You looked so gorgeous! What are your top pre-wedding beauty tips?

“My wedding day was the prettiest I have ever felt in my life, so thank you. I think the key to feeling your best is to know when to leave the party the day before. I was in bed at 10 and had only two glasses of wine so no hangover and no bags under the eyes! I still had the jitters so I made sure to eat and drink as much water as possible before the ceremony since it was outside. And it truly helps when you work with people who know what they are doing. My makeup artist was Julie Olson of Makeup Deluxe (check out her blog here) and Gray Gilligan of Salon 12  (I sent her images of Kate Hudson and she nailed it).  Doing your homework helps and so does including visuals. Other than that – a facial and a microderm and I was good to go!”

No Chip Off The Old Manicure

Friday, August 13th, 2010

For some, people watching is observing others and their exchanges from a discreet, preferably al fresco, perch.  Shamefully, for me, “pretty watching”  would be the more apropos term; I’ve been known to hone my steely gaze in on the color of one’s lipstick, the crop of one’s ‘do or the hue of one’s mani.

No Chip Off The Old Manicure

Last week, while indulging myself in some harmless pretty watching, I noticed a stunning woman, immaculately dressed and groomed right down to her naked, unkempt nails. I felt an immediate sense of kinship with this nearly-perfect creature because, what mere mortal, after all, has time for the twice weekly manicures needed to keep traditional polish looking perfect?

Enter the No Chip Manicure, an in-salon mani quickly gaining popularity amongst the too busy to get to the salon weekly but must have great nails set.  The appeal includes the promise of no chips or dings for several weeks, the time saved from not going to the salon weekly (or more) and longer nails that won’t break as easily as natural nails.

What Is It?

There are several companies that manufacture the products used in what is commonly referred to as a “No Chip Manicure” including Axxium by OPI, Bio Sculpture and Shellac by CND.  The Axxium line includes some of my favorite OPI colors such as Lincoln Park After Dark, a blackish-purple, and Bubble Bath, the nude pink that I am sporting with my French No Chip Mani below.

My No Chip Mani After 10 Days

The No Chip Manicure is a gel overlay that is applied with a small brush to your natural nail. The process takes longer than a traditional manicure, 45 minutes to an hour, and also promises to last longer, think up to four weeks.

There are many shades available for No Chip Manicures although, unlike a traditional manicure, you can’t choose any hue under the sun.   And don’t even try bringing in your own nail polish, a No Chip mani can only be done with s special gel “polish” meaning you have to choose from the colors your salon has on hand.

 How is it done?

A No Chip Manicure begins much like a traditional manicure until it’s time to apply color. To apply color, the nails are usually slightly roughened and then the gel product is applied in stages.  First, a base coat is applied and cured under a UV light for up to two minutes. Next, the color itself is applied in two coats with each coat left to cure under a UV light before a top coat is applied.

One of my favorite things about No Chip Manicures — because I detest waiting and have been known to dash out of the salon before my nails are dry thus ruining my $15 manicure —  is that the second the manicure is done, nails are completely dry; like dig around in your purse for your keys, put on your seat belt, apply lip gloss dry.

The No Chip Mani promises not to chip, however, depending on how quickly your nails grow, even a manicure without a ding starts to look bad when two weeks later there’s a line of demarcation from your No Chip color of choice to new nail growth.  To remove the color you’ll have to go back to the salon where a 15 minute acetone soak promises to have polish lift right off.  In fact, even if you opt for a new No Chip mani in the same color, your previous No Chip will have to be soaked off.

Also available as a pedicure, No Chip Manicures are done exclusively at local salons and spas for $35 to $45 $50.

And while you’ll pay more for a No Chip Manicure, the return — pretty, shiny nails that look perfect for weeks — make this treatment a grooming investment worth considering.

Do tell — Are you going to give the No Chip a whirl or stick with polish that may chip but can also be changed easily?

Beauty and Style from across the Pond

Friday, August 6th, 2010

In the States, there’s a mystique attached to all things European, especially when it comes to beauty and fashion. So, in a quest to unravel the mysteries of European style, I traveled to London and Paris.  Here are the trends I unearthed across the pond...

Ballerina Flats at Topshop

Carrie was wrong

After reading several stories about how French women do everything in heels — and spending far too much time watching Sex and the City —I was convinced these graceful creatures viewed the world from a 4-inch perch. And while I did spot one uber-chic woman riding a bike in heels just off the Champs-Élysées, for the most part, ballerina flats and gladiator sandals seemed to be de rigueur for French women. The trend continued in London where I saw barely a woman in heels, perhaps because the city’s vast territory is best navigated via tube (the subway) or by foot. To prove the point,  I headed to the popular British chain Topshop, where  rows of Ballerina flats were plucked up by locals.

Bike Rentals in Paris

They’re fit

In Paris, we never once were served butter with our bread baskets, and the desserts weren’t terribly sweet. That must be why, as Mireille Guiliano so succinctly put it in her best-selling book,  French Women Don’t Get Fat.  (I think she should have named her book French Women Are Impossibly Thin.) Plus, walking and biking are preferred modes of transportation, with bike rentals available on main streets, such as the one we hit off the Champs.

I saw much of the same in London, where bike rentals are also big news with the launch of a new bike rental system, modeled after the Parisians. Overweight people appear to be few and far between in London, perhaps thanks to a more active lifestyle and “clean” diet. I stopped by the Reebok Sports Club at Canary Wharf, where men and women in business suits headed into the 100,000-square-foot facility replete with power plates, a ballroom dance studio, 42-foot climbing wall, restaurant, spa and bar.

Toni & Guy in London

Spas like U.S.

I couldn’t leave Europe without checking out their spas — not that I could have missed them, especially in Paris where I saw “Institut de Beauté” signs on every corner, including the Revlon Institut de Beauté located on the corner of Rue De Kepler, the street where my hotel was located. Not surprisingly, facials were popular in Paris, along with bronzing and detox offerings.
London, home to Toni & Guy, is the city of cool hair, so salons seemed to abound in Greater London where short choppy ’dos and long , ultra-layered locks are in demand. Lashes were also uber popular; I got “lashed” in London myself in honor of National Pampering Day.  The strangest trend I spied in England was the salons and spas that lined the storefronts at an indoor flea market of sorts in Sheffield, a city in South Yorkshire, England.

My son cozying up to Kate Moss at Madame Tussauds

The feeling’s mutual

Americans may be enamored with European style, but the truth is, Europeans think we’re pretty cool, too. From movies to celebrities to stores (think GAP, Sephora and Starbucks), all things American are popular in Europe, as well. I’d heard the French could be rude to Americans, but not once did I experience anything short of good-natured hospitality.

No need to even mention how polite the English are… remember the bicyclist in European Vacation? In London , one trip to Madame Tussauds Wax Museum — where wax likenesses of Michael Jackson, Jim Carrey and President Obama created bottlenecks — was enough to prove that they like us, they really like us.

You Give Bronze a Bad Name

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

Thanks to Lindsay Lohan, UV-Free tanning may be getting a bad rap. The truth is, UV-Free tanning is easy, breezy, streak free and oh-so-bronze but never, ever pumpkin colored.  In the name of summer, I’ve sprayed, misted and scrubbed my way to bronze skin, all to report back from the beauty trenches about which faux glow methods really work.

Audrina Patridge at this year's MTV Awards

UV-Free Tanning 101

Sunless Tanning is often referred to as UV-free tanning, meaning you’ll enjoy the benefits of bronzed skin without increasing your risk of skin cancer via sun exposure. Many sunless tanning products call upon dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a chemical that reacts with dead skin cells to darken the skin’s appearance. The “tan” won’t wash off, but it will fade gradually, usually in about one week.

Many experts agree that sunless tanning is safer than traditional tanning but there are precautions to be taken, especially when spray tanning in a booth. DHA is not approved for inhalation or ingestion, so be sure to close your eyes and hold your breath when spray tanning.

Julianne Hough at this year's MTV awards

The Airbrush Tan vs. The Spray Tan

The phrase “Spray Tan” is most commonly used to describe a treatment available at spas, salon and health clubs featuring a sunless tanning mist administered in a self serve booth.  I’ve spray tanned enough that I’m a bit of a pro, meaning I can zip in and out of my favorite spot in less than five minutes.  Here’s how it works: I step into the private spray tan booth press a little green button and a tanning mist automatically sprays, covering the front of my body from head to toe. After 30 seconds, the machine pauses; I turn around and the same mist begins again, spraying the back of my body. In just 60 seconds, I step out of the booth, buff off any excess self tanner with a towel, wash my hands and I’m on my way.   The color takes about four hours to develop so I return to my daily routine, all the while developing a deep, dark tan.

An “Airbrush Tan” is applied by professional technician who uses special equipment to precisely apply sunless tanning solution to clients. Airbrush tans are normally more expensive than spray tans but they are also more precise since the tanning solution is evenly distributed all over the body by an airbrush professional. The DHA solution is often mixed with a bronzer that is immediately visible once the solution is sprayed onto the skin.

Sunless Tanning Tips

There’s no need to fear UV-free tanning, a streak-free, natural looking tan is achievable, if you follow these tips…

  1. Exfoliate: Be sure to exfoliate from head to toe with a salt or sugar scrub, loofah or even a washcloth before tanning. I do so with the Pomegranate and Cassis Sugar Scrub from EclipseSpa.com.
  2. Go Bare: Whether you wax or shave, remove that unwanted hair before you get bronzed. Not only does hair removal help exfoliate pre-tanning, but hair removal post-tanning will significantly shorten the life of your tan.
  3. Moisturize: Apply a water – not oil – based moisturizer, such as Cetaphil, all over your body the morning before you tan. Pay special attention to the driest areas of your body, think knees, elbows and hands.
  4. Fix It: If your UV-Free tanning application does end up blotchy, which usually only happens in areas that should have been pre-treated by exfoliating and moisturizing, use an AHA or BHA cleanser to even out the skin tone. You can also mix up a DIY combo of lemon juice and sugar at home and scrub the offending spots to remove dead skin cells and even out color.

Now, I’m back to my vacation, where my newly bronzed skin has me looking like a beach bunny instead of the work-crazed, mother of two that I actually am.  Fake it ’til you make it, baby!
