Mani Monday: Shandy Butter London Swatch & Review

Monday, April 15th, 2013

I have to admit, I thought this whole nude nail polish thing was going to be boring.

But, in the name of investigating all beauty trends, I set out to find some new lacquers for this week’s Mani Monday.

Shandy Butter London Swatch

Butter London sent me a collection of their new lacquers for Spring 2013. The one that caught my eye is called Shandy, a light opaque apricot. (Perhaps I am color blind, but I would really classify this as a nude — more tan than peach.)

I’m surprisingly happy with the final finish and thinking that this whole new nude polish trend may just be something I can get behind. And, I apologize in advance for showing you my feet, but I think Shandy will look really great with open toe sandals for spring and summer.

Now, I’m off to get my hands on more nude lacquers.

Mani Monday: OPI’s Oz the Great and Powerful Collection

Monday, April 8th, 2013

Happy Mani Monday!

This week, I’ve been playing with OPI’s “Oz the Great and Powerful” collection which includes some great nudes as well as sparkling top coats and a polish in OPI’s new “Liquid Sand.”

The collection includes three sparkling top coats (best for layering); Lights of Emerald City, When Monkeys Fly!,  Which is Witch? as well as nude hues in shades of white, beige and pink, specifically Don’t Burst My Bubble, Glints of Glinda and I Theodora You. Lastly, there is Liquid Sand in a deep olive/bronze hue called, What Wizardry is This? that dries to a matte, textured finish.

I really like the nudes, especially I Theodora You, a sheer pink which I have on below (four coats).

The Liquid Sand is interesting but I need to play with it a bit more to decide if I really love it or not. I experimented a bit with an accent nail in What Wizardry is This? paired with I Theodora You. I used the edge of a round sticker to accent the base color with a touch of Liquid Sand. Interesting. For a great review — and swatches  – of every single hue in OPI’s “Oz the Great and Powerful” collection, check out this post from Beauty Junkies Unite.

Whatever lacquer hue you choose, hope your week sparkles.  Stay tuned… on Friday I’ll host a giveaway of several products from the “Oz the Great and Powerful” collection.

Are you ready to get naked?

Monday, March 25th, 2013

Experts are declaring nude nails as one of the biggest beauty trends for spring 2013 thanks to many, many designers who opted for models in various hues of undressed nails on spring runways. But, after what seems like years now of nail art and sparkle, I’m not quite sure I’m ready to make the transition. Are you?

This week, I’m making a commitment to going naked with my mani. Here are  a few colors that just may make the cut:

Testing the Newest Nail Polish Stickers

Thursday, February 21st, 2013

I am not patient. I do not read directions. I am not capable of meticulously applying 10 fussy little nail stickers. But, as beauty trends come and go, I keep attempting to conquer them, which invariably gets me into sticky situations.

Nail stickers, or decals, are often crafted of real nail polish and, in the case of every brand I tried, stick onto nails for an instantly dry manicure in a variety of intricate patterns or classic solid hues.

Application was consistent for all the decals I tested: Push cuticles back, swipe nails with alcohol or nail-polish remover and then apply the appropriate-sized sticker to each nail, folding any excess sticker over the tip of the nail and removing excess material by filing downwards with an emery board.

Some of the brands I tried really stuck while others really stunk.  Here’s the scoop…

Maybelline Color Show Fashion Prints Nail Stickers, Limited Edition

Friday night is date night, but somehow, between working, taking care of the kids and other urgent items on my to-do list (like picking my nail-sticker pattern du jour), I ended up in the front seat of my husband’s car, applying Maybelline Color Show Fashion Prints on the way to a sushi spot for dinner. Typical.

Maybelline’s nail-decal set includes 18 stickers for $6.99, a nail file and a cuticle stick. The stickers were easy enough to apply from the co-pilot’s seat and my husband threw only a quick sideways glance my way as I went to work sticking, folding and filing. The print I picked, “Midnight Lace,” was chic and simple to apply.

Maybelline’s decals come in a range of patterns that can be removed by simply peeling them off, which, as a bonus, provided entertainment for the car ride home.

Essie’s Sleek Sticks

Essie’s nail decals are, in a word, stunning. These UV-cured nail appliqués are available in an array of designs that far outshine the competition.

I opted for “Embrace the Lace,” a nude lace pattern that caught the attention of one my sons right away. “Your nails look purr-ty,” the 4-year-old declared. Why, yes they did.

His respect for my pretty patterned mani disappeared quickly later that night when, elbow deep in homemade cookie dough, one of my decals went missing.

This sums up my experience with Essie’s Sleek Sticks. Much like the chocolate chip cookies I made that night, the pleasure of indulging ends far too soon. At about $10 per package, Essie’s Sleek Sticks are perfect for special occasions but mine didn’t hold up well to the demands of daily wear. To be clear: I love Essie’s Sleek Sticks mostly because the patterns are simply gorgeous.  I recommend applying them right before the big night out and not expecting the decals to last as long as some of the other nail stickers on the market.

OPI’s Pure Lacquer Nail Apps

Never to be outdone in the nail product department, OPI created their own collection of polish strips which, admittedly, come off a bit more high end than the drugstore variety. OPI’s Pure Lacquer Nail Apps include a range of prints, think leather and metallic zebra,  that are pretty cool. Compared to Sally Hansen, the OPI Pure Lacquer Nail Apps are a tad easier to apply as the strips themselves are more pliant (no need to warm them in your hands before application). Sold for $7.99 at Nail, Etc. or head to OPI.com to find a retailer near  you.

Sally Hansen’s Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips

Sally Hansen’s Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips were the first nail decals to catch my attention a few years back. Sold for about $10 at local drugstores and super stores, these DIY strips are made of real nail polish and are available in both a range of patterns and solids. To apply, simply remove the strip, swipe nails with polish remover and apply the strip to natural, clean nails. Application is fairly straightforward but, after tons of practice, following a few simple steps will make the process truly doable.

First, warm the strips slightly by rubbing them between the palms of your hands. Don’t tear the strips, rather use an emery board to remove any excess product that goes beyond the edge of your nail. A more complicated but of the moment option is the newer Salon Insta-Gel Strips from Sally Hansen. Similar in concept to Nail Polish Strips, these Insta-Gel Strips serve up a two step gel manicure that is fast, easy and fuss proof.  A tip: Don’t forget to buy the starter kit and not just the strips, as the gel strips require the use of an LED light to set. The starter kit is sold for about $29.99 at Ulta.

L’Oreal Colour Riche Nail Lingerie

I stumbled upon L’Oreal’s Nail Lingerie at Walgreens and paid about $8 or so for a set of 18 stickers. Nail Lingerie promises to add dazzle to both nude nails as well as already polished nails. The stickers were fairly easy to apply and seemed to have a strong adhesive but, try as I may, I just couldn’t get them to really lay flat on my nails without buckling or bubbling.

While the packaging promises that the stickers will last up to 10 days on nails, I took mine off at the end of the night because, frankly, my nails look better naked.

Mani Monday: Inspired by Fashion Week

Monday, February 11th, 2013

Happy Mani Monday!

This week, I’m getting inspired by fresh lacquer hues and trends from New York Fashion Week.  How about you?

From butter LONDON backstage with Dannijo, Global Colour Ambassador, Katie Hughes, created nail looks inspired by “old Hollywood glam.”  I love the hue they’re calling “LA Moss” below. A vampy red color that proves “oxblood” is here to stay for fall.

At NYFW, CND created some simple yet crisp looks for Alexander Wang.  Nude lacquer is, as always, a stylish fall staple. This one is CND’s new color, Impossibly Plush.

Finally, the exotic LA Perla Black Label Collection, inspired by Spain, was matched with two lacquer hues, Union Jack Black and Yummy Mummy, to create a chic half moon mani.

Hope this week sparkles!

P.S. The winner of last week’s #glamgiveaway here is Cynthia Conley. Congrats!

Mani Monday: Nail Art Moon Candy

Monday, February 4th, 2013

Happy Mani Monday, pretties! There are so many new nail products available now, both high end and mass market. Over the weekend I headed to a couple of different spots, from Walgreens to Nordstrom, and filled my beauty basket, if you will, with a bevy of new nail products.

I’m working on a story right now about nail decals for the Tampa Bay Times — I can’t believe how many brands there are: L’Oreal, Maybelline, Essie, OPI, Sally Hansen, etc. And while it will surely take me the rest of the week to get through the whole lot of nail goodies I bought, I decided to take Revlon’s Nail Art Moon Candy in “Satellite” for a spin today.

I started by applying two coats of the dark base color — I’d call it a deep wine — and allowing them to dry. Next, I layered on the glitter top coat once and then decided to add a second coat for extra sparkle.  Here is the end result:

Revlon Nail Art Moon Candy in Satellite

At first, I wasn’t sold. So, I decided to try the top coat with my own hue, a pretty peach from Jessica Nails. The result was not quite as dazzling:

Jessica Polish paired with Nail Art Moon Candy Top Coat

The more I look at the darker hue of Revlon’s Satellite with the sparkling gold effect, the more I like it.  And so, I have to agree, Revlon knows best.
I’d love to see what you’re wearing today! Tweet me @mrsbrundage and share your best #manimonday look today and every Monday.

Mani Monday: The “uniform” Mani

Monday, January 7th, 2013

Just like my go-to outfit when I can’t find anything in my closet that I like, or the perfect red lipstick that I sport when I am fresh out of new make up ideas, this week I’m sporting my “uniform” manicure hue — the color I can always count on to look great on my nails, “rage” from ORLY.

Another thing I love about this hue is that it applies flawlessly, even if I have to do it myself, and it matches everything.

Happy #manimonday, pretties!

Mani Monday: On the Night Before Christmas

Monday, December 24th, 2012

Happy holidays, pretties! While in the midst of holiday preparations, i.e. cooking, wrapping, spending time with the kids, I stopped for a quick DIY manicure. After all, it’s Monday!

20121224-124709.jpg
I certainly don’t consider myself a nail art pro, so I thought it would be fun to use one of Sally Hansen’s Salon Effects nail decals to accent one of my nails. The nail decal is flanked by Deborah Lippmann’s “fade to black” lacquer on one side and Essie’s “lapiz of luxury” as a base coat topped with a second coat of “morning sky” polish, a light sparkling blue, from Dazzle Dry.

20121224-125325.jpg

I love the way it turned out and I think it will go perfectly with the black leather plants I’m planning on wearing for Christmas Eve dinner tonight. And clearly, spending 30 minutes matching my manicure to my outfit for one night makes perfect sense, right?

Merry Christmas Eve and Happy Hanukkah!

Mani Monday: Secret Weapons

Monday, December 17th, 2012

It’s #manimonday and I’ve got an arsenal of manicure secret weans to share with you. Here are a few items I count on to keep my nails looking perfect.  Some may surprise you…

1) ProFoot Callus Blaster: Yes, this product works amazingly well on feet but I also use it as a quick cuticle cleaner when I change my polish in between salon manicures. You know how dark lacquers tend to stain your cuticles and the skin surrounding your nails? A quick scrub with this callus remover on nails beds and nails, and cuticles, are totally clean and ready for a new hue of polish. Get it for about $10 at drugstore.com.

2) CND Super Shiney Top Coat: This is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best way to achieve magazine worthy, super shiney nails. Get it for $8.50 at Ulta.

3) Cutex Corrector Pen: When forced to do at-home-manis, I try to “stay in the lines” but that’s never been my strong suit. Cutex Corrector Pen helps me appear to be a master manicurist, despite still having the same level of nail painting expertise I did when I was 8 years old. Get it for $3.99 at drugstore.com.

4) Cutex Advanced Revival Nail Polish Remover: This is not your typical nail polish remover. Cutex’s Advanced Revival is a patent-pending formula that combines the strength of acetone with the nourishing power of natural botanical drying oils. Rather than stripping nails, nails are strengthened with each use of this product. If you are a frequent nail painter (and remover) and your nails are weak or peeling, this polish remover will make a huge difference in the condition of your nails. Get it for $2.99 at drugstore.com.

P.S. I have a fa-la-la-la FABULOUS  giveaway this Wednesday, 12/19/12 so stay tuned -)
