The Iconic Style of Mom

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

People have always thought my Mom was glamorous. As a child, it wasn’t uncommon for neighbors to tell me that my Mom was gorgeous.  As a teenager, this infuriated me; as an adult, it inspired me.

Looking back, so many of the hallmarks of Mom’s style were true classics: an immaculately applied red lip, perfectly manicured nails, Mom’s effortless dark curls, her wedges (long before the word was being flung around) and simple, knit dresses that flattered her frame and allowed her to jet from soccer practice to ballet — kids in tow — without a crease in site. Oh, and my Mom could also rock a bikini, even after four kids.

The true testament to Mom’s great style and beauty is that so many of her secrets are actually staples that even today, prove timeless.

Mom's Modern Look Book

Great Hair and Hands

My mom has never met a Vitamin E capsule that she couldn’t put to work. Back in the day, Mom would break open a capsule and use it to hydrate her cuticles before running still slick hands through her curly hair. Yup, Mom was onto the oil trend before MoroccanOil and argan oil products were even a glimmer in someone’s eyes.

Fast forward to 2011 and Mom’s classic moisturizer has been modernized. Lierac’s Sensorielle Multi-Use Oil for Face, Body & Hair serves up 24-hour hydration that nourishes with botanical oils including argan, hazelnut, sweet almond and grape seed. Get it for $34 at lierac-usa.com.

Red Lips & Tips

Mom intuitively knew that nothing pulls together a look like a splash of red.   That’s why perfectly lacquered nails and vivid red lips were part of her go-to look.  (She may also have known that nothing counteracts the sleep-deprivation caused by caring for a family of six like a pop of crimson.)

Of course, in true mama-style, Mom stayed loyal to her favorite red polish and lipstick for years, and years, and years.  Until they, whomever they were, stopped making it. Literally.  And while the teenager me would have said that Mom was in a rut, as an adult I understand that certain things, like a shade of lipstick that flatters perfectly, don’t get old. And being trendy isn’t always stylish.

Mom’s modern trick for sticking to what flatters even when trends change? ThreeCustom.com, a company that specializes in producing discontinued shades on demand, in individual batches, for lips, cheeks and eyes.

Haute Mama

Much like the modern woman, Mom had to do quite a juggling act to keep life in balance and still look beautiful. She managed to look flawless thanks to timeless dress shapes, usually knits, and the classic wedge shoe; ideal for lending elegant height without hindering Mom’s ability to run from the PTA to the playground.

Mom would no doubt argue that quality fabric, fluid draping and fabulous accessories are always on trend. I see Mom’s classic choices even today in an of-the-moment Mark & James by Badgley Mischka Wedge, $255 at Zappos.com, and ASOS knitted dress featuring a scoop neckline and short sleeves with a fitted ribbed waist and full skirt, $89.65 at asos.com

And while Mom’s timeless looks are still being emulated, her style legacy is one of a kind.

Skin Care Myths and Musts

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

Great skin is the foundation to looking gorgeous and while most of us want great skin, few of us know what to do to get it.  This week. I’ve rounded up the top skin care myths and musts; mistakes you’ll want to avoid on the road to complexion perfection, and steps you’ll have to take in order to get — and keep — great skin.

Skin Care Myths and Musts

Myth: Drinking water hydrates your skin.

Drinking plenty of high quality water is essential for good health. And being healthy certainly plays a role in looking good, but to hydrate the outermost layer of skin, it’s moisturizer, not water, that is a must. This is where a solid four-step skin care routine comes in.

Must:  Cleanse, Exfoliate, Moisturize and Protect.

You don’t need a vanity full of lotions and potions to achieve your best complexion, but you do need to incorporate four essential steps in your skin care routine.

Step one: Cleanse skin, morning and night, with a gentle cleanser that is ideally suited to your skin type.  Not sure what your skin type is? There are four common skin types: normal, dry, oily and combination.

To determine what type of skin you have, wash your face and then wait one hour. Next, press a separate piece of tissue paper to your chin, cheeks, forehead and nose. If there is oil on each piece of tissue, your skin type is oily; if there is oil on a few pieces, such as the forehead and nose, you have combination skin; flakes, without oil, indicates that your skin type is dry; no oil and no flake (lucky you) means you are blessed with normal skin.

Step two: Exfoliate morning or night after cleansing skin. Skin can be exfoliated mechanically (such as sloughing off dead skin cells with a loofah) or chemically, by using enzymes or acids to loosen and release dead skin cells. As we age, exfoliation becomes even more important because aging slows down the process of cell turnover, increasing the need for exfoliation to eradicate dullness.

Exfolikate® Intensive Exfoliating Treatment

And while many facial exfoliants are ideal for daily use, you should customize your routine to your skin type. Sensitive skin may be best served by twice-weekly exfoliation; if skin appears dry or irritated you may be exfoliating too often or with a product that is too harsh.  I’m a huge fan of celebrity facialist Kate Somerville’s ExfoliKate Intensive Exfoliating Treatment, also available in Gentle or Acne-specific formulas ($65 at katesomerville.com).

Must: Incorporate a “retinoid” into your skin care routine.

One type of exfoliant that has been nearly universally endorsed by skin care experts is retinoids, sold by prescription under brand names Renova and Retin-A. But the benefits of incorporating a retinoid into you skin care routine go far beyond dependable exfoliation. Retinoids can also help reduce or clear up acne, improve collagen production, lighten hyper pigmentation and improve skin texture.

Step three: Moisturize with a skin-type specific moisturizer. Even woman with oily-skin should not skip this step; rather opt for an oil-free noncomedogenic moisturizer. Apply moisturizer to damp skin, such as when your face is freshly washed and still damp.

Beverly Hills Skincare Daily Age Revolution

Myth: You only need to apply sunscreen when it’s warm and sunny outside.

Must: Use sunscreen every day, without fail.

That’s the essential fourth step in a comprehensive skin care routine. Every morning, apply a broad-spectrum, low SPF sunscreen of at least 15 that contains titanium dioxide or zinc oxide.

The Skin Cancer Foundation has noted that the penetration of UVA rays through car windows may place drivers and passengers at risk for skin cancer.  That means that even something as innocuous as your daily commute can be causing wrinkles and putting you at risk for skin cancer due to sun exposure. Cloudy days are no better; clouds do not block UV radiation, in fact UV rays can be magnified by clouds.

If money is no object, try Daily Age Revolution SPF 15 from Beverly Hills Skin Care ($104.95 at bevhillsskincare.com), not only does it protect skin from sun damage but this product also enhances skin texture, hydration and elasticity thanks in part to a proprietary milk peptide complex. Budget minded beauties will like Cetaphil UVA/UVB Defense Facial Moisturizer SPF 50 ($13 at Walmart) which calls upon micronized titanium dioxide to protect skin without the tell-tale white film that some physical sun blocks leave behind.

The Youth Pill: Scientists at the Brink of an Anti-Aging Revolution

Myth: You can’t delay the aging process.

Just ask Demi Moore, recently spotted on the beach with a copy of The Youth Pill: Scientists at the Brink of an Anti-Aging Revolution, a book by David Stipp about exciting new research and breakthroughs in aging on the horizon. I’m not talking about turning back time, of course. But simply putting some basic skin care musts into action – like using retinoids and sun protection — can help you look younger for longer.

A sparkle a day keeps the doctor away

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

Lorac sent over  their gorgeous new Multiplex 3D Eye Shadow Palette, literally bursting with scrumptious, sparkling shadows in a six metallic hues including Opalescent Gold with Pink Pearl, Amber Bronze with Gold Pearl, Red/Brown with Green Pearl, Silver with White Pearl, Royal Blue with Electric Blue Pearl, and Midnight Black with Holographic 3D Glitter ($38 at Sephora.com).

Available exclusively at Sephora, the palette contains six gorgeous hues that make pretty metallic eyes doable for all. I applied the Opalescent Gold at the inner corner of my eye and lid and then blended Silver with White Pearl over the outer corner, crease and lid. The pièce de résistance is Lorac’s 3D Liquid Lustre layered on top ($16 at Sephora). The set serves up blendable, highly pigmented sparkle that can be applied expertly by anyone.

Opalescent Gold and Silver with White Pearl + Lorac’s 3D Liquid Lustre

The 3D Liquid Lustre is a must buy product. It is, hands down, one of the best cosmetic products I’ve ever tried. The paraben-free liquid shimmer is housed in a small glass bottle with a dropper that releases the highest impact shimmer I’ve found in each tiny drop.

P.S. Head to Lorac.com right now and you’ll find a similar collection called “Pink Python” eye and cheek palette on clearance for $10.99; normally $35.  Just make sure you splurge and add on the $16 liquid lustre. It’s amazing!

Your 15 minutes aren’t over yet so you’ll want to make sure you’re still sparkling as the night goes on. Grab one (or more) of the mini lip glosses from Lipstick Queen’s “15 Minutes of Fame” mini lip gloss set and tuck them away. 5 Ways to Keep Feet Pretty Despite the Weather

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

Pretty feet are a year-round must!

While a chipped manicure may hurt you in the board room, a bad pedicure, or lack thereof, is more likely to hinder you in the bedroom.

After all, there’s nothing sexy about funky feet, especially when cooler weather hits, skin dries up, and said feet start scratching the sheets as you slip between them.

Here’s my go to guide for keeping your toes oh-so-pretty no matter the season.

At Home Maintenance

Between spa pedicures, maintain pretty feet with exfoliation and hydration.

Skip the scary at-home razors (you know the kind most salons aren’t even supposed to be using) and opt instead for Microplane’s Foot File; $14.95 and up at microplane.com.  This best in class implement banishes dead skin with aplomb, without risking serious injury at the hands of razor blades and too sharp edges.

I recommend the XL Pro ($24.95), because cartridges can be replaced, making this tool an investment that will smooth skin for years. Ladies, this is the best tool I’ve found for removing dead skin at home, but be sure to use it on DRY skin, not after — or in– the bath or shower.

Keep feet hydrated by applying a rich cream at bedtime, every night, and donning socks to seal in the moisture. While you can purchase special pedicure socks that work well, if done nightly, plain old gym socks should do the trick.

While some beauty insiders swear by using Desitin (yup, the baby butt cream) on feet, I prefer Theraplex FT Exfoliating Foot Emollient Callus Treatment, an ultra-rich product specifically designed to treat callused feet ($21 at theraplex.com).  One of the reasons this product really works is that the ingredients include Salicylic Acid, meaning that while moisturizing your feet this product also helps banish dead skin.

Top 5  Polish Tips

Whether polishing up between professional visits or opting for DIY pedicures, here’s my list of five tips you’ll need to get the job done.

1)     Swipe soon-to-be polished nails with polish remover to banish excess oils before applying lacquer.

2)     If polish separates in the bottle, roll the bottle between the palms of your hands to mix the lacquer without causing bubbles.

3)     Correct polish blemishes with an oh-so-handy manicure mistake eraser; I like the “Erase” pen from 5 Second Nail, sold for about $6 at CVS.

4)     To dry nails quickly when you have places to go – or if, like me, you’re just impatient – aim a blow dryer set on cool at toe nails for about 30 seconds and then apply cuticle oil.  BE sure to hold the dryer at least 6 inches away from toes so that polish doesn’t bubble.

5)     To remove dark polish, use an acetone polish remover. Acetone-free removers are gentler to nails but won’t do as thorough of a job at removing richly hued lacquers.

Glamorous Giving: Clean up for Christmas

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

Every year, in the days leading up to Christmas, I help my two sons go through tucked-away toy bins and rarely opened drawers where cars and action figures that have fallen out of favor and once-favorite clothes that are now too small go to hide.

As they (somewhat begrudgingly) part with these once loved items, they’re filled with excitement about what’s to come and comforted that their toys and clothes will find new homes with someone who needs them.

For those of us whose age is in the double digits, out with the old in with the new can be a harder concept to grasp.  While you’ll undoubtedly help your children donate or pass down out of use items, when is the last time you edited your own closet? And let’s not even talk about your makeup bag!

‘Tis the season to take a realistic look at what you wear (and don’t) as well as your makeup bag and medicine cabinet and pass along items you don’t use to someone who may need them more.

Here’s how to get started…

Out with the old, in with the new!

If the Shoe Fits

Then by all means, wear it but if it doesn’t fit, it’s time to pass it along. After going through my own shoe wardrobe I was forced to acknowledge some bad choices. Shoes that didn’t really fit (but were on sale, natch) and shoes that have never been worn because they didn’t fit my style, were set aside for Soles4Souls, a Nashville-based Shoe Charity, that distributes shoes, free of charge, to people in need around the world.

Several pairs of pumps in hand, I contacted Elizabeth Kirk, Public Relations for Soles4Souls, and asked if they really wanted pumps with four-inch heels? She assured me that all shoes, big and small, flat and ridiculously high, are put to good use. As Kirk said, “We provide shoes to many different types of outlets, including Dress for Success and women’s abuse shelters.  Nothing feels better than for a single mom of four to get a nice pair of pumps for church or for a job interview.”

Pretty colors, but not right for me.

Medicine Cabinet Makeover

Gently used or never used makeup and toiletries can be put to good use at your local women’s shelter. That means the drugstore lipstick that looked like a totally different shade in the package or the moisturizer that made you break out can find a new home with a woman who may just love the products that didn’t love you.

Gently used items can be also be swapped online at makeupalley.com, but I feel best knowing I’m passing along unused impulse buys or ill-chosen color cosmetics to someone who may treasure my toiletries.

Many women’s shelters accept gently used items while others require that personal care items be sealed. If you don’t know of a local women’s shelter, log on to ywca.org and find a local office. YWCA is the largest multicultural women’s organization in the world; they assist women in times of crisis.

Here’s to starting the New Year with a clean makeup bag, a well-edited wardrobe, and a clear conscience.

Mani Monday: Plucked from the Pumpkin Patch

Monday, October 25th, 2010

I’m infatuated with fall.

Blame it on the amazing weather we’re experiencing in Chicago; still crisp and beautiful a full month into fall.

Or the package of pumpkin scented beauty products I’ve just finished reviewing here.

It may just be the view from my balcony and the way it pairs perfectly with the pumpkin flavored coffee I sip in the mornings as I sit outside and plan my day.

Fall in my backyard

Or the camel Calvin Klein coat that makes anything it goes over feel runway ready.

It could be the pumpkin waffles the country club in my neighborhood serves up at Sunday brunch. (Although, wait, I don’t eat those since they’re surely full of the white sugar and white flour my trainer insists I eschew.)

Whatever the reason, this obsession with all things autumn followed me to my favorite spa today where I insisted on an uncharacteristically colorful manicure in “Chopsticking to My Story” from OPI. Because, frankly, it screamed changing leaves and carving pumpkins.

Chopsticking to My Story

Which autumn hued manicures have you fallen for this season?

Building Your Lipstick Wardrobe

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

How bold will you go?

Your LBD is hanging in your closet, recently dry cleaned and ready to dance.  You know which tees and heels pair perfectly with your favorite skinny jeans and you’re not afraid to use ‘em. But when it comes to lipstick, your usually stylish self is stuck in a rut; one that most likely involves lip gloss in some shade of peach, plum or pink.

This week, I’m breaking out one of my special talents – the ability to sport lips that are crimson, fuchsia, deep, dark purple and beyond – and sharing my secrets for moving from that safe shade of gloss to a sexy new hue that’s just right for you.

Even you can rock red lips

Rockin’ Red

There’s only one thing you need to sport red lips: confidence.  Contrary to popular belief, lips don’t have to be plump or perfect to rock red but you do have to “own” the look.  Lip liner is a must, as is lip primer and, of course, a quality lipstick that’s built to last. (Watching your red lipstick bleed hurts us as much as it hurts you.)

Step one: Exfoliate and moisturize lips.

Step two: Apply a coat of primer (I like Laura Geller’s Lip Spackle.)

Step three: Line lips with a nude liner or, if you’re super steady with those hands, opt for a red liner.

Step four: Fill ‘em in and get ready to flaunt ‘em.  For super long wear, blot lips with a tissue after step four, apply a translucent powder, and then fill lips in again with a crème or matte lipstick.

Katerina Graham in Haute Pink

Haute Pink

When it comes to hot pink lips, the Don’ts are more important than the Dos.

Whether you call it fuchsia, or magenta, the secret to wearing all shades of pink well is to skip the frost, gloss and sparkle. And yes, I’m talking to you. This advice applies to anyone between the ages of 12 and 82.

Hot pink lipstick works best in clear, crisp hues and matte or crème formulas.  Don’t wear hot pink lipstick with hot pink shirts, dresses, earrings, etc. You get the picture.  Don’t sport fuchsia with your animal print Roberto Cavalli, but do think of that “haute” pink pucker as an unexpected element to complement an otherwise understated outfit.

What's your purple personality?

Pucker up Purple

Deep, dark purple, from eggplant to aubergine, is very of the moment thanks either to the world’s recent obsession with vampires or our timeless infatuation with the lady as a vamp.  Unlike red and pink, I prefer to see this season’s purple as an imperfect stain on lips or a glistening gloss.

While the darkest skin tones may find vampish purples extremely wearable, even fair-skinned ladies can opt for this season’s uber dark lipstick look by applying a swipe of lip balm topped with a dark purple lipstick of choice. Apply both with your fingers to achieve a chic once-bitten look for lips.

To get the look, try Sephora’s Lip Attitude Star lipstick shimmers ($12 each) in Audacious Violet, a berry purple, Plum Vertigo, a sheer violet, and Cocoa Excess, a purple chocolate. Or, opt to shine on with Love Junkie Lip Junkie Lip gloss from Urban Decay ($19).

SMACK! That’s the sound of you kissing your basic, boring gloss goodbye.
