Facial in a Jar? Yes, please.

April 6th, 2012 by carolyn

We all know about the importance of beauty sleep but, for  the average woman, sleep, like everything else in our lives, has to find a spot  on the to do list.

And, with my own beauty sleep in short supply, I grasp onto  any chance at appearing well rested. That’s why when Korres sent along one of their  newest products, Advanced Brightening Sleeping Facial, I jumped at the opportunity  to take multitasking to the next level.

Sephora.com touts Korres’ Advanced  Brightening Sleeping Facial ($48) as an, “overnight  facial-in-a-jar” and a “breakthrough in beauty sleep.” Cautiously optimistic, I applied a quarter-sized dollop of the product to my face and neck  before bedtime, and after a particularly draining day.

The next day, I awoke to legitimately  refreshed skin.  In fact, my complexion  looked better to me than it had in weeks. And this was just day one. After 14  days, Korres promises my skin will be noticeably brighter, even toned and radiant. And looking radiant is something I definitely have time for.

This Spring, It’s Crunch Time

March 28th, 2012 by carolyn

Karl Lagerfeld has been credited with saying that, “Fashion is the healthiest motivation for losing weight.” And while I’m not sure I completely agree, it’s certainly true that Spring 2012′s midriff-baring styles are enough to send any woman hurtling to the nearest treadmill.

versace via coolspotters.com

Don’t Call it a Comeback

It’s easy to point to the ’80s and declare this season’s look a replay, but the truth is, high waists and demure lines make the midriff of Spring 2012 more Marilyn Monroe than Madonna. Runways from the likes of Prada, Versace, Nina Ricci, Miu Miu, Dolce & Gabbana and beyond hosted models sporting bare midriffs and often high waisted, ladylike trousers and skirts.

via celebuzz.com

Celebrities Weigh In

Not surprisingly, celebs have been amongst the first to jump on the bare ab bandwagon, perhaps relishing the opportunity to display the goods after spending hours at the gym. Gwyneth Paltrow was an early adopter when crop tops sprouted up last spring; she even showed her taut-tummy in a Pucci ensemble at last year’s Emmys. Singer and songwriter Lana Del Rey showed up, just days ago, on American Idol in a chic, white two-piece outfit with a full skirt and midriff-baring, high collared top.

via topshop.com
How Low Will You Go?

So celebrities are on board. And models can clearly carry it off. But what about you and me? Can a  real woman really afford to bare her belly, and be taken seriously? Maybe not, so certainly keep the midriff under wraps at the office (or under Spanx if that’s what you prefer.)

Since this look is really just about a taste of skin, not gratuitous nudity, you don’t have to be perfect of devoid or insecurities to carry off a crop top this season. This year’s look bares just a peep of toned midriff, not the expanse of entire six packs.

versace via onsugar.com

What to Wear?

Retro-inspired styles abound, like ASOS’s  white hemmed crop shirt ($35.81).  While sporty-styles, like TopShop’s Gold Studded Tee ($44) pair well with everything from trousers to pencil skirts.  And, for the most chic of looks, pair a crop top with a jacket by night. I like the Aztec Lace Crop Top in black, $32 at TopShop, best topped with a biker jacket of sorts.

And speaking of bikes, since embracing bare midriffs for spring will certainly appeal most to those who feel good in their own skin, there just may be a spin class or two in your future. Turns out Karl may be onto something after all.

So, ladies, do tell… will you show your abs this season?

Beauty Tricks Worth Trying

March 21st, 2012 by carolyn

Not all beauty tips are created equally. Some “tricks” simply miss the beauty mark, so this week I’ve rounded up the top three tricks you simply must try because they work, beautifully.

via SmashBox.com

Eye Poppin’

You may avoid liquid eyeliner like the plague but the truth is, liquid stays put far better than pencil so mastering liquid eyeliner application is a must. Before applying liquid, use an eyeliner pencil to “trace” the line you’ll create with liquid liner. For newbies, this one step can save quite a bit of time (and eye makeup remover).

To apply liquid liner, brace the arm you’ll be using for application on a table to keep it steady. Next, apply liquid liner in three segments. Think of it as drawing dashes at the inner corner, in the middle and on the outer corner of the eyelids at the lash line. Then go back and draw connections between the dashes to create a smooth line. (Tip: use a felt tip liquid liner when starting out as felt tips tend to be more forgiving.)

Finally, once the liquid liner has dried, using an angled shadow brush, apply a matching shadow over the line to “set” the liquid.

Smooth Skin

You probably already know that starting the day with a cleanser and moisturizer is a must. What many women forget, however, is the importance of exfoliation to keep skin refreshed and glowing. A must-try trick I swear by is regular use of Dermalogica’s Daily Microfoliant which contains salicylic acid among other key ingredients. (Daily Microfoliant happens to be the best seller from the entire Dermalogica line.)

Use about 1/2 teaspoon of Daily Microfoliant mixed with a 1/2 teaspoon of water to create a fine paste. Massage the product in for two minutes, then, and here’s the trick, twice a week, create a thick paste using the Microfoliant and water. Leave the paste on skin for up to 10 minutes to create a super-effective skin-renewing masque.

Moisturize for Less

A few drops of olive oil is all a girl needs to keep skin smooth and free of dry, flaky spots.

At night, after cleansing skin, dab a tiny bit of olive oil on a cotton ball and apply to dry zones, avoiding breakout prone areas. Next, drape a towel over your head and steam your face over a hot faucet to help the olive oil penetrate.

Too blemish prone to trust olive oil? Try diluted tea-tree oil instead which is ideal for killing the bacteria that contributes to acne.

What’s your favorite no-fail beauty trick?

Promotionally Sponsored Post: The Healthy Way to Indulge in Chocolate

March 14th, 2012 by carolyn

I’ve just about gotten this beauty thing figured out.

I drink tons if water, opt for regular facials and apply eye cream nightly. And just when the habits required to look great have become second nature, chocolate, that acne-inducing lover from the past, is back.  Did I mention it’s also supposed to be good for us?

That’s right; experts say cocoa infused beauty products stimulate circulation, thanks to trace amounts of caffeine, while serving as a natural skin soother that is choc-full of antioxidants. So this week, I’ve rounded up some of the most chocolicious products on the market… all taste-tested and approved by me, of course.

Oh Lolli Lollipop Lip Shine by Philosophy

Two is definitely better than one when it comes to Philosophy’s simply addictive high gloss lip shines. The “Oh Lolli Lollipop” duo includes lip shine in Fresh and Fruity Lollipop and Chewy Chocolate Lollipop. Super-slick formulas leave lips smooth and hydrated with a hint of color. Plus, these yummy lip shines are completely free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates, GMOs and triclosan. Get the set for $18 at Sephora.

Essence of Chocolate Soap by Garden Botanika

For lots of chocolate appeal without all the fuss, I swear by Garden Botanika’s Essence of Chocolate Soap ($6.50 at GardenBotanika.com) This super-hydrating bar soap is hand-crafted from ingredients including Olive oil, Castor oil, Palm oil, Wheat Germ oil, Coconut oil and Soy oil.  Add some Shea and Dark Cocoa Butter to the recipe and skin is left so soft — and deliciously scented — you’re bound to get in trouble.

via lushusa.com

Whip Stick Lip Balm by Lush

You gotta love Lush. Committed to natural ingredients long before it was hip to do so, Lush’s International beauty boutiques serve up homegrown products with sophistication. I’m enamored with the Whip Stick Lip Balm ($6.95 at lushusa.com), choc-full of tasty ingredients such as olive oil, honey and chocolate, because it lives up to the claim on the packaging, “A Tasty Chocolate Lip Balm.” And it’s so fresh it actually comes with a made on and use by date.

Beauty Subscription Reviews: Beauty Thinks Inside The Box

March 7th, 2012 by carolyn

Across the pond there’s Glossybox. In Singapore it’s Glamabox.  But when it comes to beauty product subscriptions, stateside we’re just booming with choices. Always on the hunt for beauty deals you should know about, I got my hot little hands on several beauty product subscription services, so that I could report to you on what’s hot — or not — when it comes to boxes full o’ beauty.

What’s a beauty subscription?

In a nutshell, you purchase a subscription to these services and the company delivers to your door a package full of products and samples, supposedly at a fraction of the retail price. I found and reviewed subscription services ranging in price from $10 a month up to $50 per quarter.

via BirchBox.com

BirchBox

Every month Birchbox.com members receive a selection of four to five beauty products, typically deluxe sample sized, for ten bucks (shipping is free). The company claims that it caters samples to consumers’ profiles and offers up high-end brands including Lipstick Queen, Korres, Nars, Stila, Origins and the like.  Included in each box is generous information about said samples as well as an invitation to rate and shop from full-sized selections online. Plus, consumers earn points by purchasing and reviewing products at BirchBox.com and those points can be credited toward future purchases.

I say: Ideal for anyone who loves to try new beauty products or travels frequently (deluxe sample sizes make great carry-on mates) and pretty affordable at $10 per month.

via solifestyle.com

TheLookBag

New on the beauty scene is TheLookBag. Also priced at $10 per month, TheLookBag promises an assortment of five beauty samples.  Consumers can choose between monthly, quarterly or yearly subscription plans, and fill out a beauty profile to get products that, like BirchBox, claim to be customized. Shipping is also free.

I say: My “bag” arrived with generous samples of Kim Vo Brilliant Luster Glaze, a Suki Cleansing Bar, a moisturizer called “Sweet Vanilla Frosting,” Cailyn Water Drops Cream and Rose & Cucumber Eye Cream from Kelly Teegarden Organics. Well worth $10 for a beauty addict like me!

via beautyfix.com

BeautyFix

DermStore’s BeautyFix is the priciest of the beauty subscriptions at $49.99 per quarter, including shipping. It’s also the easiest to customize as consumers get to choose eight products from an online store of types. And, unlike the other services tried, BeautyFix products tended to be larger, often full size, rather than deluxe samples. Not presented as well as the cheaper options, in terms of overall packaging, BeautyFix’s quarterly package contains a high end collection of quality products selected by you.

I say: Well worth the $50 if you have it in your budget although online reviews indicate some customer service issues. Nonetheless, bigger products and the thrill of picking your own goodies make BeautyFix a personal fave.

Have you tried a beauty subscription?

Promotionally Sponsored Post: Resolve to Look and Feel Gorgeous

March 2nd, 2012 by carolyn

You know all the reasons that eating certain foods are healthy, but you may be underestimating how much eating badly is affecting not only your health, but also, keeping you from looking gorgeous.

Smooth Skin Saboteurs

What you are eating could be sabotaging your chance of having the smooth, dewy complexion you crave.  Alcohol, caffeine and saturated fat may be wreaking havoc on both your body, your health and your skin care routine.

Alcohol dehydrates skin so limiting consumption is key.  As always, it’s all about moderation.  Women’s skin is thinner than men’s skin, so experts believe that the effects of excessive alcohol consumption are more apparent on a woman’s complexion.  If you must opt for a martini with your manicure, remember to consume two 8 oz. glasses of water along with every alcoholic beverage to fight off dehydration.

Caffeine is a diuretic so with every sip of diet coke or Red Bull, skin is being robbed of precious moisture.  What to do? Alternate 8 oz. of water with each cup of Joe; thereby enjoying your daily latte without killing your complexion.

Saturated fat and trans fatty acids set off the production of free radicals and free radicals are responsible for wrinkles, skin thickening and other signs of premature aging.  Free radicals also cause skin inflammation, inviting enlarged pores and breakouts.  If your low carb lifestyle has you consuming steak and bacon galore, your face may suffer.

Another thing to watch for is partially hydrogenated oil, a mainstay in many processed foods (including energy bars).  Partially hydrogenated oil is a trans fat; trans fatty acids not only ruin your skin, they’re also awful for your heart. And that’s so not pretty.

Celebrity Lip Service

February 29th, 2012 by carolyn

Dan Aykroyd has Vodka.  Heidi Klum has Candy. Snooki has a line of Head Phones.  And while these celebrity endorsed products certainly sound interesting, I’ve discovered three celeb-loved collections worth paying lip service.

Rachel Zoe via Exude

Rachel Zoe Style

Is your lipstick so five minutes ago? Clearly you aren’t wearing Exude, a new lip collection recommended by Rachel Zoe, stylist and Exude Lipstick brand ambassador. Exude Lipstick features a mint scent, as well as Vitamins E  and C. There are also glosses designed to hydrate lips with a complex of Omega-3 and Omega-6 essential fatty acids, Goji Berry and Vitamin E.

But this isn’t your typical lipstick, Exude’s unique crystal applicator releases a pre-determined portion of lipstick each time, meaning these lipsticks hold onto their chic shapes. Zoe names Exude Lipstick’s Crimson, Scarlet Red and Coral as the “it” colors for Spring 2012. Get yours, $29 each, at exudelipstick.com.

Khloe Kardashian Odem

Dramatic Kardashians

No one can accuse the Kardashians of being low key, nor is the lip product that nearly every Dash sister has been seen wearing, Violent Lips. Violent Lips are vegan, temporary lip tattoos that come in a variety of FDA-approved colors and patterns ($14.95 for a set of three at violentlips.com).

Those who dare can opt for bold animal prints, skull and crossbones, rainbows, fishnets, sparkles and a more subdued selection of solid hues. Kylie Jenner opted for the British Flag (no disrespect intended, I assume), Kendall Jenner went with a lavender leopard print, Khloe Kardashian Odem chose silver glitter and Kim Kardashian posted a picture of herself sporting the black and white checker pattern. Even Lady GaGa has chimed in on the Violent Lips trend, making an appearance in blue glitter Violent Lips.

Kat Von D via Sephora.com

The Real Deal from Kat Von D

Forget temporary, those enamored with real tattoos are sure to know of  famed tattoo artist Kat Von D  from LA Ink. Not nearly as new, but certainly newsworthy, Kat Von D created a makeup collection, sold exclusively at Sephora, that calls upon Von D’s understanding of vivid colors and art.

I’m enamored with Painted Love Lipstick, $19,  available in an expansive collection of rich, vivid hues such as Hellbent, a blood red, A-Go-Go, reddish coral and Backstage Bambi, an ultra-hot pink.  The collection also includes a Tattoo Concealer ($25), because changing lipstick is a whole lot easier than changing tattoos.

Promotionally Sponsored Post: Resolve to Look and Feel Gorgeous

February 22nd, 2012 by carolyn

Right about now, that New Year’s resolution may be looking like a distant memory. Yup, about this time each year, millions of people learn — and then relearn — that resolutions are far too often broken.

That’s why I “resolved” to make a few minor tweaks in my lifestyle. Eat one more piece of fruit per day. Eat an extra green veggie daily. Work out one more day a week. Because, while I don’t need a complete overhaul, I always aim to do better, so I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite tips from Secrets of Gorgeous: Hundreds of Ways to Live Well While Living It Up by Esther Blum.

Skip the 100 calorie packs: Blum contends that many of us are eating more than double the portions sizes our body requires, meaning we’re packing on an additional five pounds per year. But those 100 calories packs are, according to the author, “100% completely processed foods, chock-full of chemicals, sugar and preservatives.” The best thing to do with that 100 calorie pack? Use it as a guide to appropriate portion sizes and then eat 100 calories of something healthy.

Hangover helpers: No, Blum doesn’t advocate overindulging but let’s face it– sometimes that livin’ it up mantra of ours goes a bit too far. She recommends staving off misery the morning after with a cocktail of natural supplements including Magnesium, L-glutamine, MSM, and N-acetyl Cysteine as well as drinking tomato juice and eating crackers with raw honey to help metabolize alcohol. The fix itself is enough to make me never want to drink again.

Sweet Feet: Running out of that fancy scrub you shelled out thirty bucks for at Sephora? Blum serves up this deliciously effective recipe for an at-home exfoliating scrub for tootsies. Combine ½ cup sugar, 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil and 2 drops of essential oil. Mix well and scrub away rough callused skin by applying this concoction at least twice weekly and disposing of any left over product once a week.

Living well while living it up? That’s a resolution worth keeping.

Happy Valentine’s Day, Love

February 14th, 2012 by carolyn

Happy V-Day Pretties.

I hope your day is chock full of love from every direction and tonight finds you glamorously intertwined with someone you adore (even if that someone is simply you).

I just found out that a very good friend is expecting a new bundle of joy and since my family (husband and two sons) are the loves of my life, I couldn’t resist posting this inspiring story of motherhood that I keep posted on my office chalkboard. I did a quick search and couldn’t unearth the author’s name so if anyone knows it, do tell.

Wishing you all lots of love…

We are sitting at lunch on day when my daughter casually mentions that she and her husband are thinking of “starting a family.”

“We’re taking a survey,” she says half-joking.  “Do you think I should have a baby?”

“It will change your life,” I say, carefully keeping my tone neutral.

“I know,” she says, “no more sleeping in on weekends, no more spontaneous vacations…”

But that is not what I meant at all.  I look at my daughter, trying to decide what to tell her.  I want her to know what she will never learn in childbirth classes.

I want to tell her that the physical wounds of child bearing will heal, but becoming a mother will leave her with an emotional wound so raw that she will forever be vulnerable.

I consider warning her that she will never again read a newspaper without asking, ” What if that had been MY child?”  That every plane crash, every house fire will haunt her.  That when she sees pictures of starving children, she will wonder if anything could be worse than watching your child die.

I look at her carefully manicured nails and stylish suit and think that no matter how sophisticated she is, becoming a mother will reduce her to the primitive level of a bear protecting her cub.  That an urgent call of “Mom!” will cause her to drop a soufflé or her best crystal without a moment’s hesitation.

I feel that I should warn her that no matter how many years she has invested in her career, she will be professionally derailed by motherhood. She might arrange for childcare, but one day she will be going into an important business meeting and she will think of her baby’s sweet smell.  She will have to use every ounce of discipline to keep from running home, just to make sure her baby is all right.

I want my daughter to know that every day decisions will no longer be routine.  That a five year old boy’s desire to go to the men’s room rather than the women’s at McDonald’s will become a major dilemma.  That right there, in the midst of clattering trays and screaming children, issues of independence and gender identity will be weighed against the prospect that a child molester may be lurking in that restroom.

However decisive she may be at the office, she will second-guess herself constantly as a mother.  Looking at my attractive daughter, I want to assure her that eventually she will shed the pounds of pregnancy, but she will never feel the same about herself.  That her life, now so important, will be of less value to her once she has a child.  That she would give it up in moment to save her offspring, but will also begin to hope for more years-not to accomplish her own dreams, but to watch her child accomplish theirs.

I want her to know that a cesarean scar or shiny stretch marks will become badges of honor.

My daughter’s relationship with her husband will change, but not in the way she thinks. I wish she could understand how much more you can love a man who is careful to powder the baby or who never hesitates to play with his child. I think she should know that she will fall in love with him again for reasons she would now find very unromantic.

I wish my daughter could sense the bond she will feel with women throughout history who have tried to stop war, prejudice and drunk driving. I hope she will understand why I can think rationally about most issues, but become temporarily insane when I discuss the threat of nuclear war to my children’s future.

I want to describe to my daughter the exhilaration of seeing your child learn to ride a bike.  I want to capture for her the belly laugh of a baby who is touching the soft fur of a dog or cat for the first time.  I want her to taste the joy that is so real it actually hurts.

My daughter’s quizzical look makes me realize that tears have formed in my eyes.  “You’ll never regret it,” I finally say.

How to Hide Acne Scars

February 3rd, 2012 by carolyn

If past pimples are rearing their ugly little heads, here are my top tips for hiding the evidence of blemishes from days gone by.

Step one: Apply a primer (preferably with silicone) in circular motions on the scar. I love Rae Cosmetics Surface Primer with SPF 20 ($36 at raecosmetics.com).

Step two: Apply concealer in circular motions across the scar. As I mentioned here, for serious coverage I really like Dermablend products and their Smooth Indulgence concealer ($21 here) is no exception.

Step three: Apply a translucent powder with a q-tip.

Viola! Bye, bye blemish.
