Three eye makeup tips that really work… promise!

March 29th, 2013 by carolyn

Follow typical beauty advice or the instructions included with your favorite cosmetics and you’re often left with results that are less than stellar. On the other hand, hang out with experts who’ve used these products again and again and you’ll discover unusual application tricks only whispered backstage and shared in industry circles. That’s why today I’ve rounded up three little-divulged beauty tricks that really work.

Apply false lashes like a real pro

Any woman who has applied false lashes on herself knows just how difficult it can be to fake long lashes without expert assistance. I used to struggle myself until a makeup artist shared this shockingly simple yet effective tip: apply lash glue to your own lash line rather than applying to the base of falsies as typically recommended.  I typically use an eyeliner brush to apply the glue to my lash line and I swear by Katy Perry eyelure lashes. Once applied, use a swab with the cotton removed to press the lashes into place. Always start by applying lashes from the outside corner of the lash line in.

Never throw away old mascara

There’s no reason to toss a used mascara wand in the trash, because cleaned mascara wands are ideal for a multitude of beauty uses. Clean old mascara applicators with eye makeup remover followed by skin cleanser and hot water. Once clean, and dry, these wands are ideal to use for taming wild brows and errant updo hairs. I use a mascara wand generously coated with hairspray to tame baby hairs around my ears and at the nape of my neck anytime I opt for an updo. Other wands are used to brush brows, and in a pinch, a touch of Vaseline on the tip of a recycled mascara wand is ideal for shaping brows.

Master liquid liner (finally)

Even women who are the most adept at applying their makeup can find liquid liner vexing. You need a steady hand to apply it well; it quickly goes from just right to overdone and it smears faster than you can say “bagel.” Have no fear; with these three tips you master applying liquid liner.

Use a felt-tip liner when possible. My standby is EnvyDerm’s liquid eyeliner ($36), which also happens to promote lash growth. You’ll be tempted to close your eyes to apply the liner; don’t. Keep your eyes open and apply liquid liner by creating three small dashes at the lash line. Next, connect the dashes and, finally, close your eyes for about 20 seconds to allow it to dry.

Finally, you can apply cat eyes without ending up looking like a tiger.

Are you ready to get naked?

March 25th, 2013 by carolyn

Experts are declaring nude nails as one of the biggest beauty trends for spring 2013 thanks to many, many designers who opted for models in various hues of undressed nails on spring runways. But, after what seems like years now of nail art and sparkle, I’m not quite sure I’m ready to make the transition. Are you?

This week, I’m making a commitment to going naked with my mani. Here are  a few colors that just may make the cut:

Top 5 Red Lipsticks

March 22nd, 2013 by carolyn

Red lipstick is my thing. And while it’s (thankfully) hip to wear red at this very moment, I’ve basically been addicted for years. When gloss became the lip decor du jour a few years back, I tried to conform. Naturally, I failed because while I agree that smoky eyes pair best with nude lips, I feel naked without a strong splash of color on my lips.

Best Drugstore Reds: Revlon Fire & Ice and Orange Flip, $8

Revlon makes the best drugstore brand reds, hands down. I’m hard pressed to choose between my two favorites: Revlon’s Super Lustrous lipstick in “Fire & Ice,” a long, lasting and classic hue that sells for about $8 at drugstores and Revlon’s “Orange Flip.” Paired with my favorite red lip liner, “Orange Flip” becomes that just right hue of orange-red that manages to flatter and brighten skin tone even on the dullest winter days.

Best Glossy Red: Girlactik Star Gloss in Ooh La La Red, $18

For those who aren’t yet red-y to sport a full-on matte red lipstick, a shimmering gloss can be the ideal way to add some color to your lips without going full force. Girlactik glosses are among the best glosses around with a touch of sparkle and enough tact to stay on your lips without bleeding outside the lip lines.

Best Designer Red: Dolce & Gabbana Lipstick in Attractive Monica and Italian Monica, $33

Head to Sephora and nab your choice of these most flattering reds inspired by Monica Bellucci, the Italian actress and Dolce & Gabbana muse. Available in hues created by MUA Pat McGrath, these creamy lipsticks are all pretty addictive but I particularly love Attractive Monica, a cool red and Italian Monica, a warm red.

Best Long Wear Red: Make Up For Ever AQUA ROUGE Waterproof Liquid Lip Color, $24

This two-step product is unbelievably long lasting and available in “red,” a fire-engine worthy hue whose boring name belies its fabulousness. Apply the matte hue first and then slick on the transparent top coat for extreme shine with absolutely no feathering. Get it at Sephora.
muf

Best Eco-Chic Red: True Balance Red from Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics, $18

100% vegan and cruelty free, OCC Lip tar combines the longevity of a lipstick with the slickness of a gloss. Lip Tar goes on shiny but dries to a satin finish. Keep in mind, just the tiniest drop will do, plus the color lasts for hours.

America’s Beauty Show

March 12th, 2013 by carolyn

I just returned from three days in Chicago at ABS, America’s Beauty Show (ABS), an industry event for beauty professionals. What a crazy scene it is at ABS with loud music, tens of thousands of people, and beauty products, treatments and styles galore. The entire show is like a walking trend show and a peek into what looks beauty professionals are embracing this year, most of which they’ll be passing along to their clients.

Eyelash extensions were everywhere at ABS so clearly, we are not done with the concept of uber-thick, uber-long lashes. Hair extensions also showed no signs of slowing down. From real hair to affordable clip-ins, hair extensions are quite popular, intimating that despite many short styles cropping up, plenty of women are still hungering for extra long locks.

A company called Eye Kandy seemed to have met, and dusted with sparkle, every single female beauty professional we met (and a few of the guys) with their “liquid sugar.”

Stila Cosmetics was on hand with their own eye candy. (See below.)

But, the most amazing product I personally discovered is from a company called Instantly Ageless. Their booth was located across from ours and, oddly enough, their “miracle” turned out to actually be miraculous. All day long we watched in amazement as women’s wrinkles literally disappearred before our eyes. I don’t take an endorsement like this lightly, ladies. This product is simply beyond words- you just have to see it to believe it. They have some videos and before and afters on their site and, trust me, these are not exaggerated. I saw these transformations all day with my own eyes.

It was a fun yet exhausting three days at McCormick place — all done in four inch heels, of course.

Freebie Friday: Win $250 in Beauty Goodies

March 8th, 2013 by carolyn

Happy Friday, pretties!

While organizing my beauty products last week, I realized that I have far too many perfectly new, absolutely fabulous products just taking up space in my “medicine cabinet,” so to speak.

And, as I’ve already established here, decluttering and organizing my cosmetic collection is a big enough job to keep me busy. Why not turn to you to help take on some of the work?

That said, I rounded up some of my absolutely favorite products (all new of course) and wrapped them all up in one of my favorite cosmetic bags for corralling make up, and I’m offering it all to one lucky winner this Freebie Friday.

The bag and contents are worth over $250 and include products from IT Cosmetics, Fusion Beauty, EnvyDerm, Nurture bath and body and Moroccan Oil, to name a few.

Spring Cleaning: Getting my cosmetic collection under control

March 7th, 2013 by carolyn

10 nail polishes. Seven lipsticks. Five bottles of hairspray. Four bronzers (because apparently I am very, very pale). That is just the beginning of a list of toiletries that littered my bathroom counter on a recent weekday morning.  Not to mention the dozens of eye liners, brushes, foundations, mascaras and the like rattling around in the drawers beneath. Clearly, it was time to rein in my cosmetic collection.

Nail Polish

How many manicures does it take to get to the bottom of a nail polish bottle? More than I’ll get in my lifetime judging by the dozens of lacquers lining my bathroom drawer.

There are two main schools of thought when it comes to organizing polish collections; shelf it or paint it. The shelf it gang advocates displaying nail polishes, color coded on shelves, just like one typically sees at a salon. That option was out – my husband would never go for racks of varnish adorning the walls of our master bath. The paint it crew suggest storing polishes in groups of colors in drawers, but not before painting the top of each bottle with a drop of the hue housed within so that one can easily suss out which color is in each bottle. That was also a no-go, due to the aforementioned complete lack of patience.

An even easier solution is to house polishes, grouped by color, in paper market trays. These are the open-faced gift boxes found in the gift wrap departments of many retailers and sold for about $1 each.  Not only is this an affordable way to store polishes and see all the colors in your collection at a glance, with this disposable storage type you’ll never cry over spilled paint.

Lipsticks & Liners

Acrylic containers have basically cornered the market on lipstick organization but, since I don’t own any acrylic furniture, I wasn’t ready to introduce my bathroom to acrylic either.

I am, however, an advocate of lip liner so I felt it made sense to store lipsticks with their coordinating liners.  Enter clear glass votive holders, the ideal way to store lipsticks and liners, paired by hue, either in drawers or on countertops arranged on trays. I paid about fifty cents each for mine at a local Old Time Pottery.

BIY Beauty Organizers

If Martha Stewart wore more than just clear gloss, perhaps there would be an entire section of “Living” devoted to chic, DIY, chevron-patterned makeup organizers, all made out of items just lying around the house.

Unfortunately for me, Stewart seems to be a makeup minimalist, and I am forced to come up with my own BIY (buy-it-yourself) cosmetic corralers.  No, I’m not crafty nor detail oriented, so I can’t tell you how to turn a coffee can into a pretty pink organizer, but I have discovered some handy products that do the job beautifully for just a bit of green.

Keep curling irons, blow dryers, flat irons and the like contained, even when still warm, with the Style Station Organizer or the Polder Style Station, both sell for about $20 online.  Lori Grenier’s countertop white, wood cosmetic organizer holds up to 100 pieces in specialty compartments and it rotates; get it for about thirty bucks at QVC.com.  If you have a healthy respect for cosmetics but not a downright obsession, the Stretch and Store Organizing Tote at Walmart sells for just $13.30 and features a removable plastic white tray topped with an elastic tote that stretches to accommodate different shaped items.

Of course, you could stop adding to your cosmetic collection which would make organizing all these oh-so-pretty products much easeir. But, frankly, that’s not something I recommend -) In fact, tomorrow, I’ll be adding to your collection with a fabulous giveaway featuring some of the very best new products I’ve tried. Stay tuned– and subscribe to my blog– for details.

Easy on the Eyes

March 5th, 2013 by carolyn

Like many working Moms, my days typically speed by.  And, while I usually impress myself with how much I actually get accomplished (hey, I’ve got to impress somebody), I’m always on the hunt for shortcuts.

Sure, I’ve tried not showering, not putting on makeup and working at home in my bathrobe as a “shortcut” but, while that approach does save time, it doesn’t make me feel great about doing so.

Which is why quick makeup routines are always in demand. I recently picked up L’Oreal’s Infallible Eye Shadow in “Gold Imperial” and I highly recommend it. It’s long lasting and swipes on easily without needing tons of blending to look good. It’s affordable at about $8 and you do not need to be a makeup guru, nor watch one on YouTube, to apply this shadow flawlessly.

photo

I paired it here with a pretty rust-hued lipstick that I created by applying a base coat of red lipstick (any brand will do), blotting it and then lining lips with Manic Panic lip liner {similar product here}. Lastly, I applied a final coat of rust lipstick that I got in a random palette {similar here} at last year’s America’s Beauty Show in Chicago.  Truly a 5 minute makeup routine.

I then threw on my favorite Tory Burch leather pants (they are as comfy as leggings), a top and ballerina flats that feel like slippers. The end result is that I feel just as cozy as I did fresh-faced in my bathrobe, but a lot more comfortable when I look in the mirror.

Testing the Newest Nail Polish Stickers

February 21st, 2013 by carolyn

I am not patient. I do not read directions. I am not capable of meticulously applying 10 fussy little nail stickers. But, as beauty trends come and go, I keep attempting to conquer them, which invariably gets me into sticky situations.

Nail stickers, or decals, are often crafted of real nail polish and, in the case of every brand I tried, stick onto nails for an instantly dry manicure in a variety of intricate patterns or classic solid hues.

Application was consistent for all the decals I tested: Push cuticles back, swipe nails with alcohol or nail-polish remover and then apply the appropriate-sized sticker to each nail, folding any excess sticker over the tip of the nail and removing excess material by filing downwards with an emery board.

Some of the brands I tried really stuck while others really stunk.  Here’s the scoop…

Maybelline Color Show Fashion Prints Nail Stickers, Limited Edition

Friday night is date night, but somehow, between working, taking care of the kids and other urgent items on my to-do list (like picking my nail-sticker pattern du jour), I ended up in the front seat of my husband’s car, applying Maybelline Color Show Fashion Prints on the way to a sushi spot for dinner. Typical.

Maybelline’s nail-decal set includes 18 stickers for $6.99, a nail file and a cuticle stick. The stickers were easy enough to apply from the co-pilot’s seat and my husband threw only a quick sideways glance my way as I went to work sticking, folding and filing. The print I picked, “Midnight Lace,” was chic and simple to apply.

Maybelline’s decals come in a range of patterns that can be removed by simply peeling them off, which, as a bonus, provided entertainment for the car ride home.

Essie’s Sleek Sticks

Essie’s nail decals are, in a word, stunning. These UV-cured nail appliqués are available in an array of designs that far outshine the competition.

I opted for “Embrace the Lace,” a nude lace pattern that caught the attention of one my sons right away. “Your nails look purr-ty,” the 4-year-old declared. Why, yes they did.

His respect for my pretty patterned mani disappeared quickly later that night when, elbow deep in homemade cookie dough, one of my decals went missing.

This sums up my experience with Essie’s Sleek Sticks. Much like the chocolate chip cookies I made that night, the pleasure of indulging ends far too soon. At about $10 per package, Essie’s Sleek Sticks are perfect for special occasions but mine didn’t hold up well to the demands of daily wear. To be clear: I love Essie’s Sleek Sticks mostly because the patterns are simply gorgeous.  I recommend applying them right before the big night out and not expecting the decals to last as long as some of the other nail stickers on the market.

OPI’s Pure Lacquer Nail Apps

Never to be outdone in the nail product department, OPI created their own collection of polish strips which, admittedly, come off a bit more high end than the drugstore variety. OPI’s Pure Lacquer Nail Apps include a range of prints, think leather and metallic zebra,  that are pretty cool. Compared to Sally Hansen, the OPI Pure Lacquer Nail Apps are a tad easier to apply as the strips themselves are more pliant (no need to warm them in your hands before application). Sold for $7.99 at Nail, Etc. or head to OPI.com to find a retailer near  you.

Sally Hansen’s Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips

Sally Hansen’s Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips were the first nail decals to catch my attention a few years back. Sold for about $10 at local drugstores and super stores, these DIY strips are made of real nail polish and are available in both a range of patterns and solids. To apply, simply remove the strip, swipe nails with polish remover and apply the strip to natural, clean nails. Application is fairly straightforward but, after tons of practice, following a few simple steps will make the process truly doable.

First, warm the strips slightly by rubbing them between the palms of your hands. Don’t tear the strips, rather use an emery board to remove any excess product that goes beyond the edge of your nail. A more complicated but of the moment option is the newer Salon Insta-Gel Strips from Sally Hansen. Similar in concept to Nail Polish Strips, these Insta-Gel Strips serve up a two step gel manicure that is fast, easy and fuss proof.  A tip: Don’t forget to buy the starter kit and not just the strips, as the gel strips require the use of an LED light to set. The starter kit is sold for about $29.99 at Ulta.

L’Oreal Colour Riche Nail Lingerie

I stumbled upon L’Oreal’s Nail Lingerie at Walgreens and paid about $8 or so for a set of 18 stickers. Nail Lingerie promises to add dazzle to both nude nails as well as already polished nails. The stickers were fairly easy to apply and seemed to have a strong adhesive but, try as I may, I just couldn’t get them to really lay flat on my nails without buckling or bubbling.

While the packaging promises that the stickers will last up to 10 days on nails, I took mine off at the end of the night because, frankly, my nails look better naked.

Travel Tips for the Glam Girl-on-the-Go

February 19th, 2013 by carolyn

You’re well beyond Ziploc bags and hotel bar soap. This means, when you travel, you have all of your beauty necessities perfectly packed in a pretty little (see-through) cosmetic case, and all in TSA approved sizes. Right? Well, maybe not, but it’s certainly something to aspire to.

One of my best tips for the woman who wants to travel in style, and bring along quality toiletries for the ride, is to join a beauty subscription service like BirchBox. (Check out my review of several beauty subscription sites here.) While these services are billed as ways to sample new products, I find that they function best as a great way to keep you travel bag stocked with some of the latest and greatest grooming items on the market, typically in sizes approved for air travel and ideal for packing.

A recent BirchBox included a few items I tossed aside but more importantly, some perfect travel sized products that I kept. These items will join me on my next cross country jaunt: Oscar Blandi Dry Shampoo, Miracle Skin Transformer Microderm Cream, Kiehl’s Creme de Corps and a luminizer from The Balm.

Now, I just need two tickets to paradise.
