Party Pretty: 5 Must Have Date Night Dresses

Thursday, February 7th, 2013

As I’ve mentioned before here and here, I’m a huge fan of the ShopStyle app.

And, I’m also obsessed with dresses. They are so damn easy to wear and save me considerable time that would otherwise be spent trying to decide which shirt and skirt combo is best. (That seems like an easy enough task but for some reason, it literally takes me ages to come up with a combo that feels just right.)

Here are five date night dresses I’m currently stalking on ShopStyle…

ASOS Pencil Dress with Pockets in Oxblood, $66.55

;

Again from Asos.com — isn’t this dress insanely sexy?

Asos Pencil Dress With Sweetheart Neckline, $39.47

I adore Reiss because of the feminine, body conscious cut of so many of their dresses. Plus, Reiss has an amazing sale on their site right now.

The Eugenie Leather T-shirt Dress, Dark Olive, $520

;

I could have included a dozen Reiss dresses in my top 5 but I’ve narrowed it down to just two. (My husband would be so proud!)

Cut-Out Sleeve Fiorella Dress in Black, $340

;

Just as I’ve been pining after these Alexander McQueen shoes for-evah, I’ll probably never spend $2,165 on a dress but if I could, if I would, this would be the dress…

Top 3 Beauty Splurges

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

Since this week’s PrettyCity email edition is all about saving, I thought it only fitting that I blog about splurging today.  A subject I have to admit, I much prefer.

Having tried a million beauty products  — O.K., more like 15,000 – I have definite opinions about which products and services are really worth the money.  I have affordable products I turn to even if there’s a pricey counterpart sitting on my vanity waiting to be used.  But I also swear by certain products and services that may seem expensive at first glance, but are actually a smart beauty investment.

Here are some of my favorite beauty splurges. And, might I add, they’re worth every cent.

Eyelash Extensions: They’re not cheap, that’s true, but long lashes take years off your face, save you enormous time in the morning and help ensure that you look great straight out of the pool. That’s priceless.

After traveling around the country for events and other engagements, I have a list of extension experts I trust in many cities. In Chicago, it’s Salon Lashe, Hair Base and others. In NYC, it’s Skintology and Chris Chase.  In L.A. it’s Billy Lowe, et al.

Brazilian Keratin: I know, this is a controversial one. I have to admit, I’ve had Brazilian Keratin and while I don’t get it regularly, I can say that I found it to be am amazingly worthwhile splurge one hot, humid summer. My hair was sleek and frizz-free for months and for women who really aren’t happy with their hair type, I swear this hair care “splurge” lives up to the hype.

Skin Care: I swear by really great skin care products. I have girlfriends who find stuff they love in the drugstore but I find that higher price skin care packs more of a punch. I’m currently infatuated with Suki’s Clay Cleanser, Astara’s Sea Mineral Soak and Biotherm’s Multi Recharge.

At my house, splurging and saving live in harmony. I’ll throw on a Target dress with six inch Louboutins. I love gourmet cheese and organic Japanese pears… paired with a cheap glass of White Zin.

What’s your favorite beauty splurge and what do you save on?

Beauty School

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

No need to go back to school to learn the latest beauty tricks and tips; this week I’ve rounded up all you need to know to get pretty peepers, luscious lips and well-groomed brows.

Eye Catching Tricks

Why is it that eye makeup stumps even the most stylish women? It all comes to down to blending, lovies, and it’s a step that too may of us overlook.  A smooth base is the first course in smoldering eyes for night and naturally pretty peepers by day. Prep eyes by cleaning completely with a gentle eye makeup remover. (I like Jafra’s Eye MakeUp remover; $12 for 4.2 oz. at jafrausa.com.)  After that,  apply an eye makeup base to create the smooth palette that will help keep eye shadow looking smooth, not sloppy. One to try is Sorme.com’s Under Shadow Eye Shadow Base, a cream formula that covers darkness and redness on eye lids while improving the staying power and blendability of shadows.

Now, pick a shadow that complements, rather than matches, your eye color. While professionals can work magic with loose eye shadows, I encourage women like us to avoid them. There’s nothing like a pot of highly pigmented shadow to create a messy shadow look thanks to the propensity to use too much product.

All you really need to create a classically pretty eye makeup look are two shades, one darker and one lighter. Apply the darker shade to the outer corner of your eye including the lash line and outer crease. Next, using the lighter shadow you have selected, fill in the inner eye corner and upper eye lid. Use the same light shade to highlight the brow bone. Finally, using a high quality shadow brush, blend the lighter shade over the darker shadow to create a smooth, eye-catching look.

Pretty Puckers

Smooth lips, neutral liner and a flattering lipstick or gloss is all a girl needs to successfully navigate from office to home and beyond with sparkle.   Using a tablespoon of brown sugar and ½ tablespoon of olive oil, mix up a quick at home lip scrub that will assure that lipstick or gloss glides on smoothly.

After prepping lips, apply either a lip base of a quick coat of your favorite foundation or concealer to create a neutral palette for lip color.  Next, pick a nude-hued lip liner and fill in lips (not around them) before slicking on gloss or applying lipstick within the lip line (not outside of it). Finally, apply a dab of light, neutral eye shadow to the center of the bottom lip to create a pretty pout.

Brow Wow

Great brows provide the ideal framework to an oh-so-pretty face and yet so many women overlook their brows. Not sure if your brows need help?  Take a picture of yourself; you just may get an entirely different impression than you do glancing in the mirror. Brows that are too thin or crooked can be quickly fixed with a good brow pencil and some self control (as in, stop plucking).

The key to filling in brows like an expert is to use short, feathery strokes calling upon a brow pencil that is one shade lighter than your brow hair. Also, for most women, shading brows just above the brow line can lend a youthful, bright-eye look while shading brows below the brow line can close eyes, lending a sleepy look that’s less than flattering.

Class dismissed!

Redken's Time Reset Collection

Hmmm… could what I thought were cowlicks actually be crow’s feet?

Redken, Zotos, Phyto and Alterna seem to think so. They, among others, are now serving up shampoo, conditioners and beyond for those whose hair gives away their age.

Time Reset by Redken promises to “reverse years of damage and combat six signs of aging.” Despite the fact that I think my hair is quite youthful, thank you very much, what flat-iron-using, hair curling, highlight-gettin’ woman hasn’t done “years of damage” to her locks?

Other Anti-Aging Hair Care collections include Phyto Phytodensium Anti-Aging  and Alterna Caviar Anti Aging, as well as Zotos’ Age Beautiful line.

I tress-tested Redken’s Time Reset Shampoo, Conditioner and Youth Revitalizer and let me just say, it makes my hair feel like silk. As in soft, shiny, utterly manageable silk. Don’t even think of skipping the Youth Revitalizer, it’s the work horse of the trio, serving up deep conditioning paired with peptides and ceramide that promise to repair lack luster locks. The products retail from $13 to $20 with in-salon anti-aging services offered at select Redken salons for about $40.

And let’s face it, you don’t have to be an old dog to appreciate a new beauty trick.

Being Mean is Not Glamorous

Saturday, July 10th, 2010

I’ve sworn off Perez Hilton. I know, it’s shocking. My younger sister, whom I adore, sent me a link the other day about Megan Fox’s “new look” and I couldn’t read it, although I was dying to, because it linked straight to “Hollywood’s Most Hateful Hated Web Site!”

It’s not as if I wasn’t tempted. After all, I’m only human. But I’ve decided to take a stand against the meanness that I feel is becoming so pervasive online.  It’s a personal choice.

I’m not judging – after all, this is a no judgment zone  – just asking you to stop and consider how un-glamorous it is to be mean.

I admit, I’ve been dabbling in niceness for a while, even engaging in random acts of kindness now and again. My skin reacted almost instantly, improving in clarity and smoothness.  Is this what that whole “Beauty is more than Skin Deep” thing is all about? I may be onto something here.

A few weeks back, I met up with a too-close-to-home reminder of how the virtual anonymity of the Internet can foster nastiness when a blogger used his blog to attack some of my staffers.  Thanks to Google Alerts and Topsy, I found out about the blog posts rather quickly. I called the guy up; we hashed it out the good old fashioned way and cleared up the entire misunderstanding.  Turned out, despite the tone of his blog, he was actually a nice guy.

Certain popular review sites seem full of meanness to me; so much so that, ultimately, I find the reviews to be useless.  On one site, a user commented “That’s what the Internet is for, to call a**holes out.” Really? That’s not the Internet I know.

My Internet is for discovering handmade stockings from Tel Aviv, donating food to Feeding America by simply sharing a good mood, and reading inspiring blogs from women I admire like Pretty in the Queen City and Cupcakes and Cashmere.

I hope you’ll find that my blog, and the other PC blogs we host here, inspire and enlighten you, make you chuckle — occasionally cry — and most of all, help you see the beauty in life.
