Mani Monday: Glam Ink

Change is glamorous, no?

Typically, I’m hooked on classics, from the style of dress that I know complements my body type best, to the shade of my lipstick. But occasionally, the urge to shake things up becomes overwhelming and in those moments, there’s nothing more glamorous than breaking out of one’s mold.

This week, I’m opting for a “supercool” twist on a classic mani by pairing Perfect Formula polish in Deco (you may recall I sported this hue here) with Jessica’s Alluring Creature and Supercool Nail Tattoos from bigRuby.

The bigRuby nail tats are fairly easy to apply and can be used to amp up any basic mani. Simply remove a tattoo from its backing, apply to dry nails (over polish or on a bare nail) and then hold a cotton ball dipped in water on top of the tattoo for 15 seconds.  Finally, apply clear polish over the nail to “set” the tattoo; I used CND’s Super Shiney Top Coat.

The effect is unique, yet subtle enough that I’d try it again. I think I’ll experiment with a tone-on-tone effect, such as a set of grey bigRuby tattoos over a favorite slate polish.  And,  I’ll definitely take the tattoos to my favorite salon next time because, while change can be good, I never tire of getting a professional manicure.

P.S. bigRuby sent me several packages of tattoos, so I’ve got a couple of packages to share with you, my pretties. Just comment below if you’d like to try them and I’ll send two readers each a set.

P.P.S. Congrats to Jen who won last week’s Freebie Friday, the skin-saving duo from LaROCCA

Back to Black

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

I’ve been living in color of late, from the fuchsia mani I sported here to the pumpkin-colored paint job I opted for here. And don’t even get me started on glitter, I’ve been bronzed, burlesqued and beyond. So it’s no surprise that this week, I yearned for a deep, dark manicure that was more “Paris” than “princess.”

Enter China Glaze and their “Black Diamond” lacquer, a not-at-all-black, gunmetal gray with the slightest shimmer. It’s not new, first released in 2007, but it’s the ideal dark hue when you’re over black and don’t want to be in a crowd of Lincoln Park After Dark manis.

Black Diamond

I planned to use it for my pedicure only,  but once my nail tech slicked a few coats on my toes, I was hooked. I quickly dropped the sparkling berry hue I’d brought for my manicure back into my purse.

CND Super Shiney Top Coat

The pièce de résistance is courtesy of CND and their “Super Shiney” TopCoat, which amped up two coats of the deep gray China Glaze lacquer with incredible gloss. This 3-free top coat also protects polish from scratching and fading meaning that it may just be Mani Monday once more before I have to even ponder a new polish hue.
