Mani Monday: OPI’s Oz the Great and Powerful Collection

Monday, April 8th, 2013

Happy Mani Monday!

This week, I’ve been playing with OPI’s “Oz the Great and Powerful” collection which includes some great nudes as well as sparkling top coats and a polish in OPI’s new “Liquid Sand.”

The collection includes three sparkling top coats (best for layering); Lights of Emerald City, When Monkeys Fly!,  Which is Witch? as well as nude hues in shades of white, beige and pink, specifically Don’t Burst My Bubble, Glints of Glinda and I Theodora You. Lastly, there is Liquid Sand in a deep olive/bronze hue called, What Wizardry is This? that dries to a matte, textured finish.

I really like the nudes, especially I Theodora You, a sheer pink which I have on below (four coats).

The Liquid Sand is interesting but I need to play with it a bit more to decide if I really love it or not. I experimented a bit with an accent nail in What Wizardry is This? paired with I Theodora You. I used the edge of a round sticker to accent the base color with a touch of Liquid Sand. Interesting. For a great review — and swatches  – of every single hue in OPI’s “Oz the Great and Powerful” collection, check out this post from Beauty Junkies Unite.

Whatever lacquer hue you choose, hope your week sparkles.  Stay tuned… on Friday I’ll host a giveaway of several products from the “Oz the Great and Powerful” collection.

Are you ready to get naked?

Monday, March 25th, 2013

Experts are declaring nude nails as one of the biggest beauty trends for spring 2013 thanks to many, many designers who opted for models in various hues of undressed nails on spring runways. But, after what seems like years now of nail art and sparkle, I’m not quite sure I’m ready to make the transition. Are you?

This week, I’m making a commitment to going naked with my mani. Here are  a few colors that just may make the cut:

Happy Mani Monday! Hope you start the week out sparkling.

Obsessed with Orange

Monday, June 4th, 2012

I’m recently infatuated will all things orange, from dresses to lipstick and beyond. Of course, orange from head to toe is not a flattering look, so it’s best to opt for accents – like a tangerine clutch with chocolate-hued bermudas and a white tee or orange lips with a favorite LBD.

I’m so obsessed with Revlon’s Orange Flip lipstick and OPI’s Atomic Orange polish that I seem to find a way to pair it with every outfit of late. The key to pulling off orange lips, if you’re reticent, is to pair it with a flattering lip liner. To tone the orange down, opt for a nude liner, or turn up the heat, as I did below, by pairing orange lipstick with red liner. Even my husband was a fan of this combo.

Mani Monday: Do Something for You

Monday, January 24th, 2011

Over the weekend, I read a survey claiming that 3 out of 4 men could care less if women have manicures; meaning a manicure doesn’t make a woman more — or less– attractive to a man.

I believe that. And I think it proves what I’ve always advocated; feeling pretty is something you do for you, not for a man… or anyone else for that matter.

OPI's Extra-va-vaganza

My husband regularly compliments my manicures and he was smitten with this week’s hue, Extra-va-vaganza from OPI’s Burlesque collection (two coats atop Essie’s “Lady Godiva”).  And while I think the hue is a fun change from the norm, it won’t become my go-to polish hue. I prefer red, black, grey or brown on a day to day basis.

So even though hubby loves this glittery copper, I’ll no doubt be back in Lady Godiva or Iron Butterly or Chanel’s Coromandel by mid-week. Because my manicures are for me, not him.

Mani Monday: Plucked from the Pumpkin Patch

Monday, October 25th, 2010

I’m infatuated with fall.

Blame it on the amazing weather we’re experiencing in Chicago; still crisp and beautiful a full month into fall.

Or the package of pumpkin scented beauty products I’ve just finished reviewing here.

It may just be the view from my balcony and the way it pairs perfectly with the pumpkin flavored coffee I sip in the mornings as I sit outside and plan my day.

Fall in my backyard

Or the camel Calvin Klein coat that makes anything it goes over feel runway ready.

It could be the pumpkin waffles the country club in my neighborhood serves up at Sunday brunch. (Although, wait, I don’t eat those since they’re surely full of the white sugar and white flour my trainer insists I eschew.)

Whatever the reason, this obsession with all things autumn followed me to my favorite spa today where I insisted on an uncharacteristically colorful manicure in “Chopsticking to My Story” from OPI. Because, frankly, it screamed changing leaves and carving pumpkins.

Chopsticking to My Story

Which autumn hued manicures have you fallen for this season?

It’s just another Mani Monday…

Monday, September 13th, 2010

The Bangles have been running (or walking like Egyptians) through my head all weekend in anticipation of today, Mani Monday.

Mani Mondays are my excuse, and yours, I hope, to head out to my favorite salon or spa and head home with 10 sparkling fingernails shining back at me.

I flirted with the No Chip Mani a few weeks back, as you probably read here, but ultimately decided that I’m a variety is the spice of life kinda girl.  While weekly manis are a must, twice weekly manis are even better.

Zoya's Alegra

Perhaps it’s the ups and downs in the weather here —  one day 60 degrees, the next 80 degrees – that have me vacillating between dark hues that are suitable for fall (like Estee Lauder’s Blue Dahlia Pure Color Nail Lacquer pictured below) and sparkling spring manis, such as Zoya’s Alegra (above).

My manis, like this transitional weather, are ever changing. Yet even for a creative woman like me, inspiration can be hard to find, so I turn to a few of my favorite polish sites to get ideas and craveable color combinations:

Do you have a favorite polish for Fall?  Tell me all about it and you’re entered to win a collection of my faves from Zoya, OPI, Essie and more.
