Bling Watch : Shayoon Aboo Jewelry Designer

Monday, February 27th, 2012

I met Shay during the NYFW unveiling of Sachika Twins  Ivanka collection for Fall 2012. I was having a minor make up emergency in the ladies room and this gorgeous stranger offered me her extra make up brush for my touch up. “Ok this girl is super cool ,she can’t be from NYC”,I thought. A New Yorker would never do that for a complete stranger.

Turns out girlfriend is from LA via Kenya, Africa.  LA girls are always this cool I should have known. As we talked I found out she is was launching her “Primal Couture”collection that day while accessorizing the Sachika Fall 2012 show. I made it a point to  interview her backstage and find what Primal Couture was all about.

Shayoon Aboo and her fiance on the red carpet

Her pieces are heavily influenced by her blended cultures of Africa ,India, Pakistan, and Turkey. I can only imagine the life she leads and the African beauty secrets she must know growing up in Kenya. (note to self ask her  later)

Shayoon’s necklace which is seen in this photo is stunning. You can see more of her work here .

Here is the short interview about what she’s wearing and where you can find it after you fall  head over heels for it .

Tell me about the necklace you were wearing that night ,its incredible !

SA:  The necklace I was wearing is one of my signature pieces from my Primal Couture Collection. It is a compilation vintage piece. I imported the material from Pakistan, and Afghanistan, and Turkey. The coins are over 100 years old. There are bells, stones, and velvet chunks throughout.

What is it made of and what inspires your work  ?

SA:  It is silver, metal, and has velvet lining and rope to tie. The stones are carnelian agate and lapis. My inspiration for the collection and in general is to unleash the primal energy and tie in the dramatic feel as well as the history of fashion. For example ,where it originated, why it changed, and who changed it, who developed it. Architecture, music I mean I could go on and on. Being alive is the biggest inspiration. Recognizing and appreciating the value of life and then doing something that truly fulfills you. I am inspired by seeing others in their own element. I am so thoroughly inspired by how the past influences the future.

It’s beautiful! So what can clients expect to spend for a Shayoon Aboo original ?

SA: My points vary depending on the piece and the metals used. Everything is one of a kind and has a story. I have pieces that range from $60-1,000 +

So based her pricing even the thrifty fashionista can afford a one of a kind piece jewelry/conversation piece .

Oscar worthy cocktails

20120226-032749.jpg

By now the Oscar viewing parties are in prep for tonight. The cocktails will a big part of keeping guest happy . I’ve actually been experimenting with a few recipes that I cant wait to share with friends.Depending on the party  your planning either one of these will be delicious addition. This are for single drinks but all you have to do is increase it to fit your needs.

The Marshmallow Martini

4 counts of Smirnoff Fluffed Marshmallow creme vodka
2 cts of Vita coco water in natural flavor

Pour over ice in a cocktail mixer and shake

Pour into a  martini glass . Top with a cinnamon stick  and 2 mini marshmallows for garnish.

This hot chocolate recipe is great for two to cozy up with Ocsar night.

Hot Ginger coco

1 bag of American Heritage Chocolate sticks
1/2 tsp of cinnamin to taste
2 tbsp of Yazi ginger vodka
1/2cup of preferred milk . I use almond milk because it taste great with chocolate and its lite consistency does not over power the vodka.

Take on stick of American Heritage chocolate
Add it to the heated milk and stir until melted . Add a dash if cinnamon , and then Yazi ginger vodka.
Stir to blend and enjoy.

NYFW Fall /Winter 2012 Sachika Twins

Saturday, February 25th, 2012

It’s been a long time since I’ve been to a Sachika Twins show, so I was very interested in seeing how they have grown as designers. I found the Ivanka Collection for Fall 2012 to be surprising and quite wearable.During NYFW the twins show at Style 360 at the Metropolitan Pavilion . Style 360 is alternative venue to Lincoln Center and so conveniently located. Not sure what was going on with the 360 shows this year but there was a distinctly different vibe than the usual laid back welcoming atmosphere of seasons past. But I digress, designers To-Tam and To-Nya Sachika had full house front and back stage.

I was backstage getting a good look at the make up and hair looks. I was impressed that the girls were backstage with their proud parents totally relaxed.

Side Up do's at Sachika

The rest of us were running around like no headed chickens but these girls were cool as cucumbers. Eva Marcille of ANTM and Miss Universe Leila Lopes were featured models for this season . Jewelery in the show was by LA designer Shay Aboo . Her collection is pure tribal with influences from Turkey ,Africa and Pakistan. She is one to watch Her interview in coming up. The clothes were wearable pencil skirts, sexy dresses, hooded jackets, a fabulous romper, and a tad of fur. I fell in love with many of the clothes walking down the runway.

Correspondent April Woodard with recording artist Arika Kane

The crowd was filled with tastmakers and celebs. I spotted Sharon Carpenter (Entertainment correspondent) April Woodard (Correspondent)l ,Arika Kane , and Debra Ginyard, (celebrity stylist) I loved Arika’s James Nelson leather jacket. Her look was circa JLo 2004 Jenny from the block . Love !

The show was fantastic and opened with something different. A short film the twins worked on with director Matias Desiderio. Take a look at this and this one of my favorite looks from the show.

NYFW Beauty: Katie Gallagher Fall 2012

Hair at Katie Gallagher

The runway presentation at Katie Gallagher was rock and roll  all the way.  The make up included wild bold color on the eyes . I ‘d call it a brighter heroin chic. The hair was  in messy up dos. The models were straight ,ultra thin which fit the look perfectly. Here’s what I found out about the look on hair .

The look overall was inspired by the forest ,trees and nature. T3 tools were used to by lead stylist Cesar Ramirez to create these looks . T3 single pass iron was use to add some texture along with the T3 Featherweight blower . Indique hair ,  a line oof the best hair extensions, were used to fill in with shorter hair. Another product used was actually in the gift bag called Batiste dry shampoo. Batiste was used to soak up  and product buildup. Here’s how Simply spay in Bastiste dry shampoo massage in brush and viola ! Voluminous hair ready to be styled.   Here is a video below on of the styling w/ T3  by Cesar Ramirez .
