Friday, December 17th, 2010

A favorite for the holiday season

This Sunday, December 19, from 12 to 8 pm, favorite Chicago designer Lara Miller will open the basement of her studio space for the second annual Birthday and Holiday Studio Sale.

Miller’s studio is located at 931 Cornelia Ave., in Lakeview, one block south of Addison.  You can follow the signs to her basement space, where you will find great deals on Lara’s archived collections and her new line of accessories.

You can also take advantage of the opportunity to pre-order your favorite pieces from Miller’s Spring 2011 collection, which debuted at this year’s Fashion Focus Chicago.

If you spend $75 or more, you will receive a gift certificate towards personal training from Blakely F.I.T. Michelle Blakely—one of Lara’s biggest fans—is one of the best personal trainers around, with a smart and fun approach towards fitness.

Because it’s a birthday party as well, DJ Sye Young has prepared a fabulous music mix for the day, and Lara’s favorite KIND bars will be on hand, as will vegan cupcakes from Bleeding Heart Bakery.

It would be a shame to miss out on these deals!

Launch/CFI Shop Party

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Walking into 900 N. Michigan Avenue shops last Tuesday night, we could hear the music emanating from the 5th floor.  My friend Keely and I looked at each other, ready for anything, and wound our way up the escalators to the Launch/CFI event.

We gave our names at the entrance, passed by the empty food table (they ran out of food very early, due to overwhelming rsvps on Monday and Tuesday, and had to order more in the middle of the party.  That means you’re at a really cool party, you know!)

As we wandered around, gazing at models on pedestals and making our way to the back bar, I wondered out loud to Keely, “Where are the clothes?  I thought this was supposed to be a shop?”  We got our drinks (made with Svedka flavored vodka; mine was cranberry fizzy drink with vanilla vodka and hers was a citrus vodka with lemonade–both pretty darn tasty), and made our way to the front of the space to look for my dear friend Lara Miller, who is the director of the Chicago Fashion Incubator.

Lara was smiling and happy, though tired; she had been there until 6 am the night before, preparing the space for the party.  She had gone home and taken a quick, early morning disco nap before returning to 900 at 9 am, and had been there since then, finishing up last minute details for the opening.  She looked fabulous, and very proud.

More Cupcake. Oh, my goodness!

We chatted for a few minutes, met some really great people, and left her to her crowds while we went to go find the famous cupcakes that were being served.  And they were completely amazing, these little cupcakes!

What we had gone to first is the event space, hence the lack of clothing on racks; the tiny shop space is next door, and it is filled with lovely pieces by the Chicago Fashion Incubator’s designers in residence.  Keely and I looked at every single item in the store, I swear.  Every thing was beautiful, but some favorites included this gorgeous dress by Nora del Busto (actually, I loved everything by this designer—such detail and such grace), an asymmetrical jacket by Anna Hovet, and a simple sheath with waist detail by Agga B.

The CFI Retail Shop is open Thursday-Saturday, 10 am to 7 pm; Sundays, 12 pm to 6 pm.  There are events happening throughout the month in both the Shop space and the Event Space.  Here are a few of them, in March and April:

  • March 26, 8-11 pm (Event Space).  Anna Hovet, Fall 2010 Fashion Show at 9 pm
  • March 27, 10 am -7 pm (Shop).  Zamrie Spring 2010 Trunk Show
  • April 3, Noon-6 pm (Event Space), Nora del Busto Trunk Show & Champagne Reception
  • April 8, 7-19 pm (Shop), Kristin Hassan Summer 2010 Event and Show
  • April 9, Noon-6 pm (Event Space), Yana Collection Fall 2010 Trunk Show
  • April 10, 10 am-7 pm (Event Space), Evil Kitty Trunk Show
  • April 15, Noon-8:30 pm (Event Space), Agga B Trunk Show
  • April 17, 10 am-7 pm (Shop), Anna Hovet Trunk Show
  • And every single Friday in the Shop is Kate Boggiano Custom Friday.

After we left the party, we wandered around 900 N. Michigan a little bit, then rode the Red Line home, stopping along the way to pick up a bottle of wine.  We stayed up late talking about clothes and parties and cupcakes, and the next day went to Legoland with the kids.  Quite a juxtaposition.

Seriously, though:  you should definitely stop into the CFI Shop and the Event Space.  It’s only there a short amount of time.  It’s worth a visit.

Chicago Fashion Incubator Pop-Up Store!

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Oh, I’m so excited about this one!  The Chicago Fashion Incubator is an amazing program for mentoring new and emerging fashion designers; the program not only provides workspace for the designers, but also allows them to study with local designers to learn the business side of things.

CFI LaunchTomorrow night, their pop-up store is launching on Michigan Avenue!  The store will only be open a month and will have trunk shows, special events, sample sales and parties, and features all of the designers who have gone through the Incubator in the past two years.

I’m so excited to see what they have to offer!  My friend Keely is coming up to Chicago, to visit during her spring break, and we’re leaving the Bean and the girls home with CarpenterBoy and having a girls’ night out on the town, mainly focusing on this party!

I love the idea of a pop-up store; I love that it’s not going to be around a long time and that most of the clothes and accessories sold are in limited editions.  I love the whole thing!

Perhaps we’ll see you there!

In Anticipation

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Earlier today, after I dropped the Bean off at his preschool, I went to lunch with my friend Laura and spent a couple of hours wandering around an outdoor mall with her, talking about fashion and beauty and life.  The sun came out, I was able to wear just a sweater, and I could feel spring in the air.  It was a great time, and was something I don’t often get to do.  Wander around, I mean.

We spent some time at the Nordstrom beauty counters, ooohing and aaahhhing over all of the pretty things:  creamy lipsticks, powdery soft blushes, vibrant eyeshadows.  All of the spring promotions were out, and the colors were enticing.  I can’t wait for spring to finally really be here, not just at the cosmetics counter.

As we wandered around and gabbed, I kept thinking about what I wanted to explore here on Head to Toe.  I’m pretty excited about Beauty, Defined; it’s intriguing to me to hear other women’s thoughts on beauty.  I’m also excited to explore more of a conversation about fashion, style, and how we live our lives.

I look forward to sharing these thoughts with you.  I look forward to spring as it washes away the winter with its filtered, gorgeous sunlight and light jacket weather.  The new colors, styles and outlook that spring always brings never ceases to amaze me.  Let’s raise our champagne glasses for a toast to spring, and all that it means.  Cheers!

Garance Dore in Vogue

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

One of my favorite fashion and style magazines of all time is, of course, Vogue.  I’ve been reading it since high school, with the short exception during graduate school when I gave magazine reading (except for the occasional, furtive glance at the New Yorker) a break.

The March issue came in the mail on Saturday evening, and I’ve already read every single word, cover to cover.  I’m that much of an addict.

One of the features in the back of the magazine was about fashion bloggers, and one of my favorite fashion bloggers, Garance Dore, was included!  Cel-e-brate good times!  Come ON!

And, on their website is a quick slideshow of her ‘must haves.’ It’s an interesting peek inside; I’m not much of a voyeur when it comes to celebrities, but if it’s someone I read a few times a week (blogger, journalist, whatever), I’m all curious as to what makes them tick.

I can’t quite explain why I enjoy Garance Dore so much….maybe it’s because she seems like a ‘normal’ woman, like one of us.  Like she’d be a good friend, someone to chat about goofy, mindless things with as well as someone with whom you could have serious conversations about life, love, whatever.

And, I don’t think I need to explain (or figure out) why I love Vogue magazine so much.  Do I?

p.s.  The Sartorialist took this picture.  He rocks, also.
