The no-judgement zone

A friend recently relayed a story to me about her daughter at school. For quite some time that little girl was best friends with another little girl. They were happy as clams. Then school started and the playground got bigger. In fact, it was the transition from Kindergarten to First Grade. More kids, bigger class rooms. Turns out my friend’s daugher {and don’t quote me because I am digging within the bowels of my memory} started to notice that her best friend seemed less interested in her. They used to share the same interests but lately, it seemed like she was interested in the other little girls more. She in fact, became a ring leader of sorts and grew a new entourage of diligent followers. And one night, my friend’s daughter broke the silence and tearfully told her mom that her best friend was becoming closer to the other girls and didn’t want to play her games on the playground anymore. In a way, they had outgrown each other. Tough stuff at such a young age.

That conversation bounces around in my head quite a bit. One…because my friend and I both have daughters so naturally I think of my daughter feeling this way one day which is totally inevitable and heart breaking at the same time. And two…because I’ve been through this more times than I can count and it really stopped me in my tracks. If you think about it, females are challenging and we’ve been facing the same issues starting at the age of 6 to the age of 66. Even my mother and her friends relay stories of women cutting down each other or showing a lack of support for each other. Look at reality TV! It’s a complete judgement zone out there.

And then I think of myself. My friends. Their stories and my stories. By your mid 30′s, you’ve started to see a bit more than the golden days of hearts and rainbows. People make mistakes. You make mistakes. I think it’s a thing called life from what I hear. And yet, the story of the playground still resonates with me except I/we are now on an adult playground but the “games” are really the same. I guess my point is…while I am not perfect, I’d like to think I’ve made some progress on my flaws and in turn, opened up my mind to accepting and finding the good in all types of people. {trying as it may be sometimes} And I think it’s a good reminder that we all should…should find the good in people and accept everyone into our group. The above quote was a springboard for this topic so from now on…I am declaring confessions of a lipgloss junkie a “no judgement zone.” Perhaps this is the single most principle I want to instill in my daughter, too.

 My question for you is…how do you feel about this topic?

  • Do you think women support other women?
  • Do you think we could do better?
  • Have you been on the receiving end?

I’d love to hear your thoughts realizing this might be a bit controversial.

{remind me to punch myself later for posting this if the comments turn into utter anarchy}

 Cheers and thanks for reading.

Top knot

October 25th, 2011 by johannalindsay

Lately, a top knot with a splash of leopard and a hint of fuchsia is all that seems to please me. The beauty of a bun is the ease in making it look imperfect.

Too tight top knots = too serious.

Messy, soft top knots = approachable, lady-like.

Above are some of my favorite top knots. I love how each one is a variation on a theme. Add a braid. Pull out a tendril. Flip it upside down. Twist the sides.

Just lovely. What is your favorite top knot look?

Smell like a celebrity!

Happy Tuesday! Today we have a fabulous giveaway from Coty Beauty. I have FOUR of Celine Dion’s new fragrance: SIGNATURE. Yes, I said FOUR! And…I was gifted a bottle, too and wore it all day yesterday as my duty to serve up an unbiased review for my peeps. One word: elegant! The songstress nailed it with hints of mimosa, pink lady apple, guava, jasmine and rose essence. There is a slight musk to the scent as well leaving just a touch of sandalwood behind in your trail. I asked my husband what I smelled like today and he replied, “like a lady.” I’ll take that all day!

I feel pretty just wearing it! Each bottle is a 0.5 oz eau de toilette.

Here’s how to enter:

  1. Leave a comment below and let us know why you should win + your email address
  2. Tweet my giveaway for an extra entry
  3. Winner must leave a new review here!

Winner announced Friday, 10/28/11.
Good luck!

October: Think Pink

October 2nd, 2011 by johannalindsay

October’s just begun and there are a myriad of breast cancer products on the market that benefit the cause. Not only can you get amazing deals on limited edition items ranging from fashion to beauty to artwork but more importantly, each company above {and many more!} donates a percentage of their proceeds to their charity partner. Think Susan G. Komen and Y-ME.

As a woman who has loved and lost several family members from breast cancer…I can’t think of a better reason to hit the streets and go shopping. Just this weekend I purchased Jo Malone’s Red Red Roses. Think Pink!

  1. Tote
  2. Artwork
  3. Bath Oil
  4. Hand Lotion
  5. Beauty Blender
  6. Lip Gloss
  7. Cartier Bracelet

Fierce Fall Beauty

September 19th, 2011 by johannalindsay

Saturday, I had the privilege to attend the Nordstrom Cosmetics Trend Show with Ashleigh. So fun, even if we had to be in line by 7am, it was well worth it. I learned so much and it was a lively event…filled with giveaways, raffles, discounts, a lot of whooping & hollaring and red carpet worthy looks. The tickets were $15 which could be applied to any purchase in their cosmetic and beauty department. You don’t have to twist my arm….

 So…my learnings…well, Fall beauty is all about 3 things:

  1. luminous skin
  2. metallics
  3. bold, red lips

Here are some of my favorite pics from the event taken by Ashleigh {thanks m’lady for sharing these great snaps!!}

What did we walk away with? Well, we both had different wish lists. Ashleigh was looking for fab skincare with retinol ingredients that would make her already flawless face even more “luminous.” Me? I wanted bold, dark raspberry lips for Fall but I had very specific parameters. I wanted to splurge on a fab lipstick so the lipstick had to:

1. be from Dior, Chanel or YSL

2. be matte

3. not be red

4. not be sheer

5. not slide off my lips or bleed.

Thanks to Heath, the amazing talent behind the Chanel counter, I settled on Coco Rouge “rivoli” and it was just right. Goldilocks’ famous last words… Oh, and of course I needed a blush to match so I walked away with the Chanel tweed blush.

All in all – a success! I highly recommend attending their next show. It’s a photographer’s dream and major blogger eye candy!

Nailing a trend.

September 12th, 2011 by johannalindsay

People always recommend steering clear of trends and sticking with the classics. And while that may work for some, it’s never stuck with me. And since this post deals with nail art as the latest trend to sweep the beauty world right off its feet…I say, go with your big bad self and be trendy! There’s no better or cheaper way to do it than with your nails for these two reasons alone: 1. they always fit, even when you indulge on the weekend and 2. once you get bored, you can just remove the nail art. Talk about avoiding buyer’s remorse!

Here are some of my favorite looks:

I never met a metallic I didn’t like. Gold nails scream “fierce.” Like Beyonce. All you need is a monochromatic outfit like all black and you can rock this look from day into night!

Mint is really big right now and so are polka dots. While I know this nail art wouldn’t last as long as a regular manicure; it’s fun and cheery. This is the perfect look for a GNO or vacation when you are easiest on your hands {read: no typing or cooking}

If you know anything about me; you know that I love cupcakes. And even though this “trend” is out and donuts are in “in” – you won’t win this girl over. I am a cupcake girl through and through. Not only are these nails my favorite of all the images but they are truly a work of art. Look at the workmanship! Do you think they can do this in a no-chip?

I said it before and I’ll say it again – polka dots are HOT! You could really wear this nail art in any color combo…it never gets old. I love this look equally for its retro glamour and for it’s lady like appearance. Pencil skirt anyone?

And here’s a handy-dandy little “how to” for y’all. {If only my nails were in this great of shape on the reg}

What’s your go-to design? Are you into nail art?

Hair envy

September 1st, 2011 by johannalindsay

Every now and again I need a little hair inspiration. Something to pull me out of my bang-cutting, ponytail wearin’ routine. I pulled these four images from Pinterest and saved them on my desktop as a reminder that just because I am a workin’ mom doesn’t mean I have to lather, rinse, repeat the same look every day. Here’s what I love about each one:

You can enter the girl in the rat race but you can’t pull the hippie out of her. That’s me. I can’t let go of my boho roots and I’ve decided it’s perfectly acceptable to rock this look with a pencil skirt by day and a maxi skirt by night. Pumps to gladiators, I say!

A beautiful mess. I love that it’s actually cool and now acceptable to rat your hair and then somehow pull it back into a disheveled ponytail. People call this Parisian chic. I call it GENIUS. Just have plenty of conditioner on standby.

Oh Lauren Conrad – you did America good when you showed us the powers of a braided ponytail! And what’s even more beautiful is that no one can detect my hair is day-old-dirty with the help of one of my super hero friend – dry shampoo. **Note** this is a great do for hair that is sorely in need of a color job, too!

I saved the best for last. I’ve always admired women who sport the bed head look with ease. The “I meant for my hair to look this sexy and unkempt” appearance. For those of us who have straight hair (read: me) I think it’s just a matter of getting out of bed and literally refraining from a comb or brush. Just toss a little dry shampoo in and resist the temptation to pull it back all day. Let Mother Nature shape it how she wants. Just make sure you’re wearing a fab set of heels. Easy enough, right?
