Happy, Healthy Hair Is The Key To Aging Gracefully

Simple nutrient might be all your hair needs to look full and healthy

While we talk a lot about skin, even healthy, young-looking skin won’t disguise your true age if your hair is a dead give-away. Thinning hair and even baldness often seem like inevitable parts of aging. But they don’t have to be. You can keep your hair as full, shiny, and youthful as your skin. A simple molecule might be just what you need.

I’ve told you in the past about nitric oxide. It is a signaling molecule. It contributes to circulation, which is key in keeping your hair and skin looking young. Since the skin is the body’s largest organ, it’s essential that blood be able to reach it easily. Nitric oxide helps your arteries relax, which improves circulation. And good circulation means that your skin — including your scalp and hair follicles — is getting the nutrients and oxygen it needs. Without these, it can’t continue to grow healthy hair, which eventually leads to thinning hair and baldness.

Your skin actually makes nitric oxide within the dermis, your second layer of skin. As your cells produce nitric oxide, the newly produced nitric oxide begins to regulate the activity of your hair follicles. Since nitric oxide is a signaling molecule, it helps the follicles know that they need to grow hair.

Your body produces nitric oxide on its own. But as you age, the levels it produces drop significantly. And that may be what contributes to the loss of healthy hair as you grow older. Fortunately, you can supplement what your body produces naturally. Adding a nitric oxide supplement, such as CircO2, to your routine will definitely help improve your circulation. And while no large clinical studies have been done to prove that supplemental nitric oxide can definitely reduce hair thinning as you age, many people have reported positive results.

So don’t let your hair detract from your youthful appearance. Make sure you are giving it what it needs to be
able to continue growing thick, strong, healthy hair that may not reflect your age but definitely reflects how you feel.

One final note: You may be taking hair nutrients such as biotin, omega 3 oils, zinc, vitamin D, etc. and your hair still is not where you want it to be. Sometimes simply adding the additional nitric oxide for a couple of months gets things jump-started because the additional nitric oxide enhances the utilization and absorption of your nutrients.

Protect Your Skin WIth Chia And Pomegrante

Saturday, July 12th, 2014

You probably know that spending time in the sun causes your body to produce melanin. This is important because melanin is what causes your skin to change color through tanning and burning. It makes your skin more sensitive to UV radiation, which makes it easier to damage and more susceptible to cancer. But a new study suggests your breakfast — depending on what you eat — could help interfere with the production of melanin.

A recent study on omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids turned up an interesting link between these fatty acids and melanin. The researchers looked at the impact of chia seeds on melanin production.
Chia seeds are high in omega-3 linolenic acid and omega-6 linoleic acid, which can help inhibit melanin biosynthesis. But by themselves, linolenic and linoleic acids can’t reduce your body’s melanin content.

However, researchers found that combining chia seeds with pomegranate fruit extract made the two work more effectively to inhibit melanin. The combination may contribute to down-regulation of gene expression of the melanogenic enzymes.

Of course, the easiest way to reduce melanin production is to limit your sun exposure. But that isn’t always completely feasible. This research suggests that a breakfast smoothie that includes chia seeds and pomegranate might be a good backup plan! Plus it gives your body a lot of other benefits, as both of these are great for your overall health. You can find both of these in your grocery store or health food store.

Cancer-fighting supplement

Sunday, July 6th, 2014

Dr. Zand Article, Systeme 41

Powerful cancer-fighting supplement may fight skin cancer even better when you use it topically. One out of seven people in the U.S. will contract skin cancer every year. It’s the most common form of cancer, and while it is often treatable, malignant melanoma can be deadly. It causes an estimated 8,700 deaths every year. So it’s vital that we find better ways both to treat and prevent skin cancer. And researchers are finding that a popular oral supplement might fight this cancer even better when you apply it topically.

As you may know, two of your skin’s biggest enemies are ultraviolet radiation and oxidative stress. Both contribute to skin aging and skin cancers. The best way to fight these enemies is with antioxidants, which combat the free radicals that can cause anything from age spots to skin cancer. One of the most potent antioxidants researchers are investigating is resveratrol. This antioxidant, found in grapes, berries, peanuts, and red wine, holds a lot of promise for keeping our skin healthy and beautiful.

Oxidative stress leads to cancer when the antioxidants produced in the cells can’t keep up with the production of reactive oxygen by the mitochondria. This imbalance can occur due to exposure from cigarette smoke, extreme temperature change, or exposure to UV radiation. Most of the research on antioxidants to date has focused on taking antioxidants orally. But that’s beginning to change.

Providing the cells with external antioxidants can help them restore their balance and stay healthy. And one of the best ways to provide these topical antioxidants is with resveratrol — the popular oral supplement. You may know about resveratrol’s powerful effects against cardiovascular disease. But researchers soon found that it has potent antioxidant properties as well. It also has low toxicity and few side effects, making it very attractive as a skin care tool.

Researchers have conducted multiple studies that suggest that resveratrol has chemopreventive and therapeutic effects. One study in particular found that resveratrol was able to cause apoptosis, or cell death, in two human melanoma cell lines. And another study found that it decreased the viability of melanoma cell lines without affecting the good fibroblast cells.

One of the downsides of taking resveratrol orally is that it’s metabolized very quickly in the body, typically within 30 to 60 minutes. That’s another reason topical application is gaining popularity. Researchers are finding that applying it topically maintains its bioavailability for much longer periods of time.

Resveratrol has a lot of promise in our fight to stay healthy and beautiful. While you can find it in grapes and red wine, contrary to some understandably popular ideas, drinking the amount of wine necessary to get a significant amount of resveratrol (about 1,000 liters daily) isn’t the best way to help your skin. Instead, try applying it topically. You can find resveratrol in both Système 41′s Restorative Night Treatment and Nourishing Day Creme.
