Makeup and creams, Needles and lasers, Scalpels and sutures

Sunday, April 17th, 2011

Today, there are endless options to improve, tighten and refresh your complexion –O Magazine’s May issue reveals the best solutions/treatments for the categories listed below.

Makeup and creams
Needles and lasers
Scalpels and sutures

For each category, the in-book story features a beautiful woman with half her face au natural alongside the other half to reflect the after image.

In May’s iPad edition, the before image morphs into the after image as the user swipes to each category (as listed above), allowing users to see the aftermath of these beauty fixes.

How Far Would You Go?

See below for the breakdown of treatments and solutions included in each category.

Easy Does It: Makeup and Creams

A retinoid cream will help your skin build collagen and soften lines around the eyes and on the forehead.
$46 for 20-gram tube of generic tretinoin (brand name Retin-A); $21 for Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Night

Slightly arched brows make your lids look more lifted.
$7 for Sally Hansen Raise Some Brows Slant Tip Tweezer; $14 for Nyx Eyebrow Kit

The fat pads under your eyes thin with age, creating shadows. A creamy concealer one shade lighter than your skin tone helps illuminate your undereye area.
$35 for Mally Beauty Cancellation Conditioning Conceale

Nasolabial folds (the lines running from the corners of the nose to the corners of the mouth) are the result of volume loss in yourcheeks. They’ll be less noticeable if you create the illusion of higher cheekbones: Blend a cream blush above the apples of your cheeks.
$10 for Revlon Cream Blush in Berry Flirtatious

A chin-length hairstyle that’s slightly shorter around the face than in the back will give your face a lift. A few shorter layers at your crown create height that offsets drooping in your lower face.
$50 to $500 for a great haircut.

You can fade brown spots with a lotion containing hydroquinone. And if you don’t want the spots to return, sunscreen is a must, every day, rain or shine.
$39 for Glytone Fading Lotion; $30 for 28.35-gram tube of prescription hydroquinone; $10 for Coppertone Oil Free Foaming Sunscreen SPF 75

The Middle Way: Needles and Lasers

Botox can soften the grooves between your brows and across your forehead. If the lines are deep, your doctor can also inject a hyaluronic acid filler, like Restylane, in the lines to achieve total smoothness.
$400 for Botox; $600 for Restylane

Botox injections can make your crow’s-feet disappear.
$400 for treatment

A hyaluronic acid filler with a very soft consistency (like Juvéderm Ultra) can be injected in the tear troughs to plump sunken areas under the eyes.
$600 for treatment

Injecting a hyaluronic acid filler (like Juvéderm UltraPlus and Perlane) in the cheeks will lift that area and soften the nasolabial folds. Results last six months to one year. Injections of your own fat sometimes last longer but require a two-part procedure— the fat must first be suctioned from your thighs or buttocks.
$600 for hyaluronic acid filler; $1,500 for fat transfer.

Fillers can add definition to a softening jawline.
$700 for Radiesse; $600 for Juvéderm or Perlane

To improve moderate sagging, some doctors also recommend a noninvasive tightening procedure, like Thermage or Titan.
$1,000 to $2,000 per treatment (Thermage requires one session; Titan requires three)

Hydrogen peroxide gel, followed by exposure to blue light, whitens teeth in the dentist’s office. At-home whitening now works almost as quickly with good results.
$1,500 for professional whitening; $55 for Crest 3D White 2-Hour Express Whitening Strips

A series of three to six monthly chemical peels or microdermabrasion treatments helps lighten dark spots and smooth rough patches.
$150 per treatment

Three to five monthly intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments even out diffuse freckling and redness.
$500 per treatment

Concentrated dark spots can be zapped with a Q-switched laser.
$200 to $600 (depending on size and number of dark spots)

No Holds Barred: Scalpels and Sutures

Botox is your best bet for smoothing forehead lines, but surgery is necessary to reposition a drooping brow.
$400 for Botox; $3,000 for browlift

One treatment with a fractional ablative laser can dramatically smooth deep lines around the eyes.
$1,500 for fractional ablative laser; $1,000 for fractional nonablative laser (per treatment)

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) removes excess sagging skin above and below your eyes, If that’s not possible, some surgeons also inject fat (harvested from the patient’s thighs or buttocks) under the eyes.
$3,000 for blepharoplasty; $1,500 for fat transfer

A facelift can smooth deep lines and add fullness to the cheeks by repositioning sagging fat pads and tightening underlying tissue.
$7,000 for procedure

Shop safely on-line

Monday, November 29th, 2010

This Black Friday, many people skipped the early morning mad rush to the doors of their favorite department store. Instead they chose to shop in the comfort of their own homes on Cyber Monday.
With Cyber Monday kicking off in just a few hour, comparison search engine SortPrice.com has released “10 Commandments” every online shopper should follow to ensure a safe, secure, and most of all, productive shopping experience as they comb the internet for gifts this Monday and every day.

“We’re committed to enhancing the e-commerce experience for everyone and part of that responsibility is educating people about the right way to shop online,” said Doron Simovitch, SortPrice.com’s co-founder and CEO. “With so many people turning to the internet now for deals, it’s more important than ever that shoppers keep their safety and security in mind when using the web during the holidays.”

You can be safe while enjoying your online shopping experience this season with SortPrice’s 10 Commandments for Holiday Shopping.

• Update your home computer’s anti-virus software and security tools before you start shopping, and if using a wireless connection, make sure it’s encrypted with a password.
• Be thorough in your research: utilize all the resources the internet provides, compare prices and search for online-only bargains to guarantee that you’re saving money.
• Order in advance to ensure you don’t get hurt by holiday shipping delays and check stock availability for a given product before you place an order.
• Use credit cards instead of debit cards. You’ll be better protected from fraud and face less liability in the event of your card number being stolen
• Carefully review every online retailer’s terms and conditions as well as their return policies, as they vary industry-wide.
• Create or update new online passwords that are unique and difficult to steal. Avoid pet names, birthdays, etc. and incorporate numbers and characters.
• Shop only on certifiably secure websites: look for ‘https://’ URLs that indicate secure connections when placing orders and entering personal information.
• Be diligent about where you disclose personal information including phone numbers, addresses and financial information and avoid unverifiable entities.
• Look for delivery guarantees from online retailers and always keep hard copies of email confirmations of orders and delivery status.
• Beware of certain promotional emails requesting personal information or promising a special deal as they could be part of a ‘phishing’ scam.

Stop the Wheel, I Want to Get Off!

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

On Thursday, November 18, 2010, the original hostess on “Wheel of Fortune,” Susan Stafford, will release her much anticipated autobiography entitled ‘Stop the Wheel — I Want to Get Off!’ This first lady of daytime television game shows was the first woman ever nominated for an Emmy on a game show! The fame and the money were terrific, but after 7 1/2 years, Susan knew she had to do something more meaningful with her life than just turn letters! So, to give you a brief idea of who Susan is: She walked away from a $100,000 a year contract to work pro bono with Cancer patients; she walked away from a million dollar divorce settlement and a starring role in ‘Beyond The Valley of The Dolls’; and she traveled to India to aid Mother Teresa and her nuns in their work with lepers. Susan’s journey in the fast lane of Hollywood drove her to realize that when the wheel stopped, it was only then that she found life’s greatest fortune!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

For a gal who started as a model and hospitality hostess in Kansas City and then New York, Susan Stafford has come a long way. In addition to hosting the syndicated Susan Stafford Radio Show early in her career which was heard all across America and in Mexico on McLendon radio stations, Susan wrote an entertainment column for the L.A. Times. She also co-starred in such hit TV shows as “Marcus Welby, MD with Robert Young, MD”; “Ironside” with Raymond Burr; “Love, American Style” with Bill Bixby and “Police Story” with Steve Lawrence.

As the original hostess on “Wheel of Fortune”, Susan broke new ground as the first woman to be given a microphone on a game show which made a major difference in the pay scale. She was also the first woman on a game show to make her own clothing deal (with Giorgio’s). The fame and the money were terrific, but after 7 1/2 years, Susan knew she had to do something more meaningful. While on the show, Susan began working with prostitutes in her home, helping build their confidence and find a better direction for their lives. At the same time, she was answering fan mail from people whose mother or child had cancer and she longed to do more.

After leaving the show, Susan spent a year as a chaplain intern in Pastoral Care Education at a cancer research hospital in Houston, TX caring for terminal patients. Talk about a contrast! Interns weren’t allowed to wear makeup and there was no audience to applaud her efforts. Instead, she found a satisfaction deep inside her heart and soul that nothing else could match.

Long before it was fashionable for celebrities to be concerned about issues overseas, Susan worked in the trenches in Calcutta, helping Mother Teresa’s nuns care for leprosy victims. To get the word out, Susan worked as an overseas correspondent along with former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, making documentaries for American Leprosy Missions in Paraguay; the Himalayas; Nepal; Ethiopia; India; the Philippines; Brazil; and Liberia, Africa.

Following her work with in Third World countries, Susan returned to America’s “leprosy” which is AIDS, caring for her dear friend, Rock Hudson and giving his Eulogy when he passed away. Even now, Susan continues to work with cancer and AIDS patients. She felt very privileged to receive the World Unity Award for humanitarian service along with Edward James Olmos and Martin Luther King, III.

Using her expertise in the world of entertainment, Susan was Vice President of Public Relations for Barry & Enright Productions. While getting her master’s and Ph.D. in psychology, Susan served a one-year internship at the Chabad Chassidic House in L.A. with drug addicts and the homeless and was also co-president of the Chai Circle.

In addition to her other credits, Susan started the Susan Stafford Foundation to deal with emergency crisis situations, human trafficking and patient advocacy. As a member of the Emergency Response Team with Media Fellowship, Intl. Susan was called to Columbine and Virginia Tech to counsel survivors and families in the aftermath of the tragedy.

A Beautiful Bracelet!

Sunday, October 31st, 2010

Tanya Lochridge Jewelry’s Rose Heart Lamp work, Rose Quartz, Czech Glass Rope Bracelet is so pretty. I just love it! Most of all, I love that ten percent of the retail price of this bracelet will be donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure and an additional ten percent of the retail price of this bracelet will be donated to Kate’s Kids 4 the Cure. The vintage inspired antique silver bead caps have tiny little hearts trailing around them. The one inch lamp work black and white heart bead is sparked by silver foil. These are just a couple of the amazing details of this piece. Check out the entire collection and do some mixing and matching! Fabulous! www.tanyalochridge.com
